The Shea Weber phenomenon = Trade Possibilities?

Nothing is written in stone yet but the Flyers possibly signing Weber to a massive deal might leave room for Garth Snow to swoop in and make a trade for another top 4 defenseman.

Although I would rather the Preds to match the offer sheet in all honesty I doubt they will. This means that the Flyers will add a cap hit of $7,857,142. According to CapGeek.com the Flyers have $7,806,627 in room leaving them a little over the cap. Plus, the Flyers have a couple of RFA’s to resign in Marc-Andre Bourdon and Jakub Voracek. Also the Flyers might prefer to have some wiggle room in case they need to make a trade deadline move.

A byproduct of the Flyers signing Weber is it makes at least one of their D-Men expendable. They currently have 8 defensemen under contract. They are Kimmo Timonen, Chris Pronger, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Mezaros, Luke Schenn, Nicklas Grossman, Bruno Gervais, and Anderas Lilja. Pronger should be subtracted but Bourdon as a RFA is probably resigned (thus added). According to CapGeek they are already spending about 28.5 Million dollars on defense add Weber and that number becomes 36 Million.

Of the Defensemen mentioned the ones I am interested in are Timonen, and Mezaros. Timonen has more of an offensive upside putting up 4 goals and 39 assists and a plus 8.He is 37 but only has 1 year left at a cap hit of $6,333,333. I think that number might be a little high for Snow and secondly, Timonen has a no trade clause he would have to waive. Although it probably will not happen it would instantly make our blue line a strong point. Andrej Mezaros on the other hand is a real possibility without a no trade clause and a cap hit of an even 4 million for 2 years he can help us reach the floor while strengthening up the blue line. His offensive stats are good with 7 goals and 18 assists in 62 games and a plus 10.He might be the odd man out on a stacked defense in Philly.

The main question is what would it cost snow to acquire Mezaros. The Flyers are a very good team all around so it might depend on what they give up for Weber. If it is 4 first rounders I would offer the Flyers this and next years 3rd rounders if they give up players than this whole fanpost might be a moot point. We can only wait and see.

Please comment on what you would give up or who you would trade for or about anything you would like. Go easy on the criticism as it is my first fanpost. Enjoy.
