What if?

With the recent let downs, I thought I'd take a look at a few of out losses so far this season and see what might have been if the hockey gods didn't hate us so much. (I know my writing skills are sub par so if somebody wants to take this idea and run with it be my guest)

Oct 29, 2011 SJ 3, NYI 2- OTL

This is the game where the refs blew it in OT, whistling Travis Hamonic for a delay of game, except the puck actually hit the glass first. I'm not saying we would have won this game, but we certainly didn't get a fair shake at it. This potentially cost us 1 pt.

Nov 10, 2011 COL 4, NYI 2- OTL

A theme all too common this season, the Islanders blew a 3 goal lead and the Avs won on a power play goal in OT. If Montoya doesn't get called for high-sticking maybe we win this one.

Dec 10, 2011 PIT 6, NYI 3

The Islanders hold a 3-2 lead midway through the second when Hamonic bumps Brooks Orpik who makes like he'd been shot. The refs, going off Orpik's reaction, toss Hamonic from the game. Both teams, who can't agree on much at all, say this was the wrong call. The Pens would score on the ensuing power play and not look back. Things could have gone differently if we had arguably, our best D-man to finish the game with.

Jan 24, 2012 TOR 4, NYI 3 OTL

The second of back to back against the Maple Leafs, the Islanders again received no power plays. Odd that the refs couldn't find a single infraction against Toronto in two whole games, that's unheard of! Anyways, this one got away with 4 minutes left in the game with a fluky goal by Grabovski sending the puck fluttering over Montoya's shoulder for the lead. The Isles would score with 10 seconds left on a goal by Parenteau but wound up losing in OT.

Feb 28, 2012 WSH 3, NYI 2 OTL

Four minutes away from recording a shutout, Nabokov gives up 2 goals to Troy Brouwer in the final 3 1/2 mintues of the games sending it to OT where Ovechkin did what he normally does. There's no reason we should have let this game get away from us!

Mar 10, 2012 NJ 2, NYI 1

New Jersey robs Nilsson of a 2nd shutout and the win by scoring 2 goals in the final 2 minutes. Not much more to say on this one.

Mar 11, 2012 NYR 4, NYI 3 OTL

A back and forth game, the Rangers won it on a Marion Gaborik goal (surprise, surprise) with just 6 seconds left in OT. Not that we would have won had it gone to a shoot-out, it's just nice think that we could have.

Mar 13, 2012 WSH 5, NYI 4 OTL

Not one, but two blown 3-goal leads in this one. Two things that really stand out to me- Staios sliding across the shooting lane on Ovechkin's 2nd goal of the night, allowing him 3 pokes to get it past Nabby, and in the shootout, Nielsen getting Neuvrith to bite, only to miss the backhand.

A few lucky bounces here and there, better officiating all around and maybe we have ourselves 9 or 10 more points. That's still only good for 9th place, behind Winnipeg, but it would at least make these last 12 games alot more interesting.
