In Montreal they have taken to praying to God for the hockey team. They don't realize he's already on the payroll on Long Island, wearing #51. (Okay, I'll stop now.)

This is such a busy month rushing up to the deadline, with games every other night if not on back-to-back nights. Saddle up and hope Hamonic's node id otay toon.

my computer has been acting up lately...help?

it takes longer to load things (not by much and it doesn’t not do it all the time), but the most annoying thing is I hear that ding sound every once in awhile like you would if you tried to exit out of a program without saving.

My anti-virus and other protection found some trojans last week but said they blocked them all, now there is no more they are finding, but I am wondering what files it affected

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 9, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

it caught the trojan, but I think it was after it infected something

but there are a few more

Ok, from what little research I've been able to do

I was able to find a forum that might be able to help. They recommend downloading a trial program that should clean your comp from the trojan.

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic140137.html

Everyone on the board that has had a problem seems to have had the same problem. Look for a post by Polsci for a link to the actual cleaning program. I hope this helps, like I said, it seems to be the same problem, and the trojan seems to be hiding in your SVCHOST.exe

That Screeching sound you just heard

was the bus trying to avoid hitting Nabby after PAP threw the goalies under the bus. He’s got to have a better answer to that question.

Of course it’s tough when the other team scores on the first shot, but you don’t admit it.

It's gotta be old

at this point….10 games this season?! First shot, first goal….wtf, thats horrible. Now I’m not blaming Nabby really, he’s just the butt of the constant problem the Isles have had with their other goalies, horrible or not.

It all breaks down to defense

Nabby had a look, but Pacioretty came in too clean, you have to lay the stick or the body on him. Jurcina should have been able to pick up that chip in to begin with.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 9, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Well true

Jurcina got burned in a game against a team where he’s probably gonna get burned. Defense is in shambles, wasn’t even too strong be4 hah. But you’re right, that horrible horrible stat can be attributed to the weak D all year.

But we also will score soon… we need to, Price’s save on KO was pretty damn nice.. couple times I’ve been thinking to myself why didn’t Moulson pass to Tavares there, he’s gotta keep his head up.

Assuming .900 save %, 8 times a season opposition should score on 1st shot.

For Isles, it is 10th, which is about 60% higher than expected, or about .840 save %, right?

"The reader of this sentence exists only while reading me."

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Feb 9, 2012 7:56 PM EST reply actions

There has to be something mathematical/statistical about that

You would think that, at .900 SV%, it would happen about 8 times per season on average for every team. But the Isles apparently set a new NHL record when they hit 9 times last month. This 10th one is just an extension of that record.

But statistically (and someone who knopws something about standard deviations) should be able to establish for us that this is statistaically highly unlikely. If 8 times a year is the expected, and 30 teams per season over 30 years for a total of 900 seasons, you would expect that 10 being a record would be very unlikely. There must be something about the first shot that makes it statistically an easier shot to stop.

Def rebounds

or at least when the play is in your zone for multiple shots to get the goalie/D out of position.

by Bleuchz on Feb 9, 2012 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, def. rebounds are higher percentage

And really, they could go the final 30 games without giving it up on the first shot, which would be just as odd in microcosm but not odd over the long stretch of games.

Some of these first goals had incriminating circumstances, but some (like tonight) were just shots that went in.

A screw MSG aside

I now have 3 MSG HD stations on Fios: MSG, MSG 2, MSG+. The Rangers are on both MSG and MSG 2 while the Devils occupy the MSG+ spot. We can’t even get in HD unless the Rangers don’t want to take up 2 HD station blocks.

FIOS makes that part nearly idiot-proof

You hit “c” on the remote if you’re in standard and, if HD is available, the box switches you to the correct channel.

Dpended on how much I abused my meds

My neck never really hurt. It was stiff, but there really wasn’t much pain except for my hip (where they took the bone for the fusion). The hardest part for me was staying still so much. I play drums a little, so I tried to stay active doing that to warm myself up and loosen.

Maybe it helped more than I thought? I mean when playing, you obviously are flexing, but not bearing any extra weight.

In the end, I shed the whole thing by the 4th or 5th week and felt fine, but I wasn’t “back to normal” as far as being athletic for about 5 or 6 months.

Well, this team is beaten

This is what frustrates me most about this team. They give up way to early way to often. turn on any other game with the team down like this in the third they at least try to fight back till the final buzzer. They don’t quit.

There’s way too much slouch on this team.

by Chickendirt on Feb 9, 2012 9:15 PM EST reply actions

Normally the only issue they have with giving up is when they don't come prepared to begin with.

And when you start the game giving up a goal on the first shot for the tenth time this season (Jesus H.) you’re not starting too well. Doesn’t help that Price is playing very well.

by sayvillelax94 on Feb 9, 2012 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Some days I feel like

some of the dynasty-era Isles who are still around need to come into the locker room between periods, or just on an off day and hold a Pride lesson for the group when they’re down late.

There was a time in this organization’s history when being down 3 goals mid-way through the 3rd wasn’t a death sentence

This does not jibe with my experience watching this team

nor many teams around the league. The “they don’t quit” thing is more cliche than anything.

Lack of desperation.

Its a 60 minute game boys. Gotta hit the net more. Sure Price made some big saves but we have to show a will to score each shift. Too many poor decisions and missed nets. A 170 minute scoring drought is just inexplicable. Very curious to see what kind of lineup we will have on Saturday. Frustrated mini-rant over.

PS Can someone explain how we keep giving up the first goal of the game on the first shot? How many times is that? That has to be a record and if it isn’t we’re close.

by jgimps on Feb 9, 2012 10:16 PM EST reply actions

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
