I actually think this game is more important than the last game

As far as the win goes. It’s always important in the standings, but for the Isles vs. Flyers thing, they need to win this game to make the last one stick a little more.

Yes.

Backloaded is always better for the team than the player. Doesn’t affect the cap hit, and delays the money until the team should be more profitable. Meanwhile, the value of money in the future is less than in the present, so it makes the contract worth less than it looks.

Not just good players…The Greats should be in the Isles HoF…

by KO21 on Feb 7, 2012 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

Ehhh

The greats get their personal banners and a prohibition of their numbers being further worn… the Bournes, Morrows, Westfalls, Flatleys, Jonssons, etc. weren’t worthy of their numbers being retired but they are revered members of the organization in their own rights and this isn’t a terrible idea.

To be honest, I questioned the point of the whole Islanders Hall of Fame thing because Bourne was the only guy on there for like 3 years who didn’t actually have a retired number… I wondered why they didn’t just put his number up in the rafters. But now I see their reasoning behind it. It just took them far longer than it should’ve.

I still worry that they only finally fixed the Hall because it's the anniversary year

But as long as they’ve addressed it now, it’s cool. Doing the right thing.

by KO21 on Feb 7, 2012 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

I see the Islanders HOF as being analogous to Monument Park for the Yankees

a way to honor players who were important to the organization, but whose accomplishments don’t warrant a retired number

by andrew430 on Feb 7, 2012 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

If you look at it as the Hall of Retired Numbers +

Then I don’t think it’s watered down. I mean they could put the whole dynasty in there. I like the idea of recognizing the shining (and somewhat lasting) soldiers from each era.

If you think about it

Who was the best player bailey ever played with consistently? Comeau? As good as he was last year he wasnt exactly a rock, and im sure he was just as frustrating to play with as he was to watch. When bailey had like 6 points in the first 5 games of the season last year it was when JT was hurt and he essentially was our 1st line center with PAP on his wing.

Does anybody know why Grabner is no longer on the PK?

I understand that the Isles have one of the best PK units in the league, but something doesn’t sit right with me when Cappy broke up one of the Isles’ best strengths last year (SH goals). I just noticed that the PK players on the last penalty were Bailey-Martin (which is great) and Nielsen-Pandolfo (which has also been solid). I just feel like I haven’t seen Grabs on the PK recently.

Is double shifting Streit on the PP a good idea, though?

I know he’s our best offensive d-man, but he just hasn’t looked right all season. He had that whiff on the first Isles PP, and he’s been making some questionable plays all season. I think having a defensive forward on the point (especially one as fast as Nielsen) isn’t that much of a liability. I’d like to see two d on the PP as well, but do the Isles have the horses to do it without double shifting a player whose ability has either declined or hasn’t been able to get back up to ability after the injury.

And I get the desire to resign

But we were all looking to move him when he had no value. Now that he might have some you got to try and pull a fast one. If we had a realistic playoff shot, I’d be more tentative, but (sadly) I really don’t think we do.

by afrosupreme on Feb 7, 2012 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

He still has more value to us

than to other teams. I hear you, if you can work a steal then do it, I just doubt that can happen, and unless he gets us a first rounder or is part of a package for a good D man, I think he’s more useful as an Islander.

This could be very true

I’d still probably take a Wishart-like prospect for him, or a second-rounder that has a chance to be in the top 50, but you’re right, at that point you’re pushing the value limit, even if when we don’t resign him.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
