Begin speculation on how he will be replaced in the lineup. Bear in mind though that the Isles have a full complement of defensemen already depending on Milan Jurcina's status (day to day with an elbow laceration).

Their next game is Tuesday at Philadelphia. Not exactly a friendly environment for rookie defensemen and close enough in proximity that a call up may not happen until gameday, especially if they're viewing it as an "insurance" call up. Their next three after that are at home.

Crappy

But at least it’s not worse, right? With the blood and the proximity to his eyes and orbital bone, I’m glad he’ll otherwise be okay.

Yes, at least it's not worse.

I imagine part of the time out will be so that they can help Travis breathe from his nose. (And do all that they can to prevent infection.)

If it weren’t the Flyers Tuesday, I’d say bring de Haan back up, because he looked really good in his 1st game for Isles. But adding de Haan would make the defense even softer physically.

It may be Mottau. Isles still have him, right? If I remember correctly, they paired him with Reese for a while and that pairing actually looked pretty decent. (I would not endorse this move, but I would sort of understand it.)

I’d like to see Wishart or Donovan, just because we haven’t seen either this season.

No matter who Isles bring up, it will be rough with Staios as the only “tough guy” on defense, and I use that term liberally, describing his style of play rather than the quality of his physicality. And AMac seems much better with Hamonic than with anyone else he’s been paired with.

As good as they’ve been together, it may be time to break up the 1st line. If the 3rd and 4th lines play as poorly offensively as they have in the past month, it may be a looooong two weeks. My suggestion:

Moulson-Tavares-Nino (He’s not working as a 4th liner. Can he work here?)
Ullstrom-Bailey-Parenteau (Ullstrom-Bailey works. Adding PAP to any line works.)
Grabner-Nielsen-Okposo (They were okay last February, right?)

Or Martin could be on any of those lines.

A lot of the offense hinges on Bailey’s line. If they can be dangerous, that will open things up for the other two lines. Rhett hasn’t looked as promising as Ullstrom, so why not switch the two? (I know, it’s only been 3 games.)

And if the 4th line isn’t going to create offense, why not make it a “pest” line? Bring up Dibo, because he’d be more effective in that role than Wallace or Nino. I wouldn’t mind seeing a 4th line of Dibo-Pandolfo-Martin.

Nino is hurting the team as a 4th liner more than he is helping it. He really is Exhibit ‘A’ for why some 19-year olds should be able to play in the AHL.

My money's (reluctantly) on Mottau to play Tuesday

Only because he’s here already and they can let Bridgeport do what its been doing. Now, should he play, I may choose to not watch the game for fear I may experience rage-induced nausea. But he’s probably the likeliest suspect.

(PS: I hope I’m wrong)

deHaan is not available

Still out. I think Katic is two weeks away from contact clearance, and he’s ahead of dehaan according to Thompson (via Fornabaio).
If emergency status is in play Wishart is a no-brainer. If not, I’d still go with Wishart for the rest of the year. The simple two-week fix is most likely Donovan. I haven’t seen him play yet, but Thompson call-up, Brandon Gentile seems to be doing all the right things. He’s a possible wildcard. Maybe a platoon with Jurcina so they don’t have to disrupt Donovan, or waive Wishart. If he signs an NHL contract tomorrow… he’s your man.

Well I would have suspected that at the beginning of the season Katic was ahead of De Haan, with the team looking for Wishart/Katic/Reese to be vet leaders for Donovan/Ness/De Haan.

Me too, I'm just thinking of health

As in Katic seemed shot/done for the year when his injury happened and CDH had a relatively healthy year before this latest. Now we’re looking at CDH’s lone NHL game being his only one this year, and Katic at least getting some AHL reps before it’s over.

Really?
This time of year 2 weeks without him can cost us the whole season…

You’re 10 points out of a playoff spot… 4 teams to jump over for that spot… to do so you’d have to play at a pace you haven’t done in 4 years… and you are going to say that missing a 22 year old defenseman for 2 weeks will cost us the season.

hmmmm… you might have something there. If I was Hamonic’s agent I would cut this post out, blow it up and hang it on my cork board… and every day I’d scribble little $ signs on it.

by JPinVA on Feb 5, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed with KO21

I can’t tell if JPinVA is mocking the statement, but this can easily cost us the season or what little playoff hopes remain. Depth is hugely important for championship teams, which is why they are able to cope with a loss like this. But the Isles have no depth, hence the discussion. He is your best defenseman. Period.

I hope the team can cope and someone can step in and do the job. Times like these you might discover the next Hamonic in the minors. We need one (or more) of these guys to solidify the D for next year. The time is now to find out what you got.

by JPinNYC on Feb 5, 2012 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

Question

I know we’ve covered this before, but I can’t remember right now. With Hamonic out, if they say Jurcina is still hurt on Tuesday, can they call someone up on the emergency basis? And wasn’t this a way they could possibly get Wishart up without needing to expose him to waivers?

Sorry, I’m pretty sure someone answered all of this, but can’t for the life of me remember.

The broken nose

Another injury ive had. I broke mine on the bone, not the cartilage. So I had surgery where I was put out and they had to crack the bone back into alignment. (Sidenote, nose is still pretty crooked.)

Anyway, after that, your nose is packed with cotton for a week or so and you breathe out of your mouth and get the blak eyes and stuff. It’s pretty unpleasant and uncomfortable. Makes you sneeze a lot too. I would assume whether it was this surgery or an easier one, he’ll be wearing a cage of some kind for a while.

I had this surgery twice.

Lots of those memories...

When I was in grammar school (PS 226) in Brooklyn we used to get there early so we could play what was known as “stop tackle”. Nothing better than a bunch of 10 year olds playing a violent game of two hand touch because nobody would own up to being “tagged”.
By the time we got in the building in the morning half our clothing was torn somewhere (mostly knees) and there was blood on everybody. You’d think we were returning from a midget prison riot.

Yeah, that sounds great

My high school roller hockey bros still get together, usually once a year but now more often. No fights or hitting, but guys would wipe out and jam wrists, rip groins, goalies would cobble outfits together and get drilled in the canolis, and we’d take a break and half of us—out of breath already—would suck down a cigarette. One time, a goalie got drilled in the neck and we almost had to all the game….almost….we just switched the poor, wheezing guy out. Another great time to whip out the Hextall and Palffy jerseys. Good times.

Exactly why adult tackle football is a bad idea

We used to do that every Thanksgiving, and when lost teeth, ACL tears and dislocated shoulders became annual occurrences, we finally faced our mortality. Especially once we determined alcohol was not a controlling factor.

…but, it’d be nice if a Hamonic-less two weeks turned into drafting Matt Dumba.

Sorry for being a realist, but Hamonic is the heart and soul of our non-playoff caliber defense. Tuesday is gonna be ugly…and, yes, I hope I am wrong.

Like I said, It’s not the year to tank – WE NEEDED TO IMPROVE THIS YEAR – but the draft may be the only way this team acquires a Dman like (potentially) Dumba (Chelios mold, from what I’ve read and seen).

Oh I like him too, and I agree we need size on D

…but, if the Isles do find themselves drafting in the top 5 (again…sigh) and both Dumba and Reinhart are on the table, I’d take Dumba. He has Chris Chelios potential – and Chelios won Norris Trophies and Stanley Cups playing at 6’1 190lbs. Dumba is approx. 6’0 165lbs. right now, so he should fill out to be 6’1 or 6’2 200lbs. (an average sized modern NHL player)…but he plays MUCH bigger than he is. I guess I just prefer a Dman who, like Potvin, appreciates the art of the open ice hit while also attempting to play the complete game – a defenseman that forwards HATE to play against. That to me matters more than size.

Hamonic is physical, but he is not really feared for his hits.

He plays a extremely smart and safe and we can’t fault him. I’d love him to line up more people and go for the big hits, but he’s smart enough to know that puts him out of position in all but the rare circumstances.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
"John Tavares(a top 10 forward in the NHL)"-Neil Greenberg

by OzzyFan on Feb 6, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

That's why it is an 'art'

Many players can lay open ice hits, few can do it at the proper time with minimal risk of being out of position. Perhaps Hamonic will begin to attempt this in his early 20’s (JFC this kid is young). And who’s to say Dumba can even accomplish this in the NHL? Noone really, that’s why he is a high risk/high reward pick.

After reading this article though, I’m chomping at the bit to get this kid on the Islanders!

he’s clearly the best dman the isles have. not that i actually believe the isles will make the playoffs, but without him, you can kiss that dream goodbye. he’s the glue that keeps the blue line together.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
