Just watched the pre-game interview with Konopka.

I still like him. All “teh gritz” jokes aside, the Isles needed players like him last year to turn a corner. They needed a player willing to yell “we aren’t doormats” to a reporter, and willing to do the hard work of punching other players in the face to make sure those players understand that doormat idea. I venture to guess that Martin learned a lot from Konopka and Gillies about standing up for his teammates in a mature way rather than those run-and-gun hits that led to penalties or odd-man situations.

I hope Konopka finds success in his career (even if he returns to the island). Also, fuck that fan at the blue and white scrimmage who douchely waved his Konopka t-shirt at Snow.

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...

I agree, and I make teh gritz jokes

He was brought in for a specific purpose and he did it. He has warts, no doubt, so I thought it was time to move on (still happy they did … they need to focus on building a fourth-line team). But I wish him the best. Time served. Fun character.

Huge game here, we have 4 games in hand on the Sens, if we win, we are then 11 points behind them

I look at the standings I can see teams like Ottawa, Florida and Toronto falter. Why? because they have done that a lot at this time of the year in recent memory

Hierarchy of calls

1st Priority: Protect the interests of the Canadian teams, highest priority given to Toronto and Montreal
2nd: Teams with “face of the league” players
3rd: Teams currently at the top of the standings
4th: Original 6 teams
5th: Teams in major markets
6th: Everyone else
7th: Teams that are expected to suck

He had some good shot blocks

I still don’t think he moved the puck well and he, along with the rest of our defense were slow which allowed the Sens to apply forecheck pressure by dumping the puck in deep and beating our defense to the boards. But I digress a win is a win.

Alright, I have to say

It’s cheesy to insert “as I first reported two weeks ago” about the preseason game into the second graph of a story not about the preseason game, but then neglect to insert, Only yesterday I reported this very topic to be mere hype and anyone relaying it merely parroting team PR only yesterday.

The sources are great, but the air of authority and “We report it FIRST” tone only undermines the product.

They did do a social experiment with World of Warcraft, or one of those MMORPG’s. IIRC there was a virus in the game that couldn’t be cured and Historians and other social scientists tracked how players reacted to the threat. Actually I found a link for it from Wikipedia. It was quite interesting.

Basically someone had died in real life, and the person spent a lot of time on WoW fishing in a certain spot. Well it just so happened that Spot was in a PVP area. The plan was to log in the person’s character and have them at their favorite spot so people could pay their respects.

Of course one of the clans from the other side raided it and killed everyone.

I found it amazing

even though I was into gaming on that level, and still am, that gov’t agencies, social scientists, et al would look at the incident on that level. It was fascinating when it happened because you got to see a snap shot of how societies deal with the psychological effects of pandemic disease.

That’s three road broadcasting teams in the past month that have said the Islanders players have lots of good things to say about Weight behind the bench. This instance was Tavares re: his helps with the powerplay.

Wasn’t going to mention it before (one was Carolina, where the broadcasters know and like him), but it’s interesting that it’s coming up in multiple stops.

Last year

Weight was captaining a power play that was sans Streit, Amac, Hamonic. Not sure if PAP was even on it that early, JT was out hurt a couple of games…I know there were some ugly turnovers by Weight early last season, but look who he was playing with.

It was shinguard Wiz, (who also missed a couple with the blowjob suspension), Eaton, Mottau, (Hillen wasn’t playing yet right?), Gervais and maybe Jurcina? That team sucked crap…I am surprised Weight looked as good as he did.

I mean I get some of the “we get no respect stuff,” but the conspiracy talk grates on me. I just don’t think it’s real. And when really close plays go against us, it seems silly to invoke it.

by afrosupreme on Feb 3, 2012 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

For me it isn't even a "we get no respect" issue.

I think there is a general degradation of the officiating in the NHL, not just involving the Islanders. My own paranoid brain ascribes this to malicious motives from the NHL, so any issue helps to feed that idea. Since I watch the Isles the most, I definitely watch it through blue/orange colored glasses.

The NHL needs to do something about this.

One other piece to add.

It always seems suspect to me (in any games) that the calls go toward the teams who are in the top 8 (or close) while teams out of it get the short end. NHL Overtime on NBCSports is talking about the ref issues from last night (Kovalchuk not called on the game-winning play for the Devs, the Columbus clock issue). It’s all me, and I know it.

Really am leaning

toward the idea that the best plan is to leave the young uns at the Bridge to compete for and possibly win a Calder Cup.

Learn em how to win.

wouldn't really be a problem

Unless they got hurt and were stuck on the Isles roster. As long as they make the AHL playoffs.

I agree with this,

I would not be opposed to seeing Ullstrom back up when he rolling again and wallace sent down.

Yup, I'm fine with this.

Id’ very much like those kids to have a winning mentality.

According to scoresheet on NHL.com ottawa’s goal was a Shorty, but there was on penalty called on an islander around that time? What’s the story

You should've seen her face. It was the exact same look my father gave me when I told him I wanted to be a ventriloquist.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
