Throwing this out there

What I’m looking for in Cizikas:
Strength along boards
Finishing offensive zone checks
Neutral zone agitation
D-zone coverage
Keeping puck in deep / low risk plays

What I’m not looking for:
Fancy plays
Abundance of points
Making an immediate impact

Temper your expectations. Casey fills a need but is not the solution to our problems.

I could be totally wrong here but I think this is the most realistic view of what he brings to the table.

Oh don't get me wrong

I’ve been looking forward to this for awhile.
I just think expectations are strangely high.
I am really suprised he is coming up as center was expecting to see him ease in as a winger (incidently I wanted him on this line replacing Rolston not replacing Bails)

My heart wants him to score.

We really haven’t outplayed them more than usual – the rangers are dominating possession. We just have had our shots go in.

I actually read the rule a bit further

and I was surprised to see this:

When the player discards the broken portion of a stick or some other object by tossing it or shooting it to the side of the ice (and not over the boards) in such a way as will not interfere with play or opposing player, no penalty will be imposed for so doing. When moving a stick that is not broken, no penalty shall be assessed as long as it does not interfere with the play and the player who lost said stick is not attempting to retrieve it, otherwise an interference penalty must be assessed.

After having read this, the refs actually had to call the penalty… still think it was weak, but it’s addressed specifically in the rules

I agree

I’m just saying that you can’t just throw those guys out there no matter the situation. And you can’t throw a guy out there like a Gillies. As much as he fires the fans up with the hits he can throw he’s never smart about it, and he doesn’t add anything to the other side of the game. You have to be able to beat your opponent on the scoreboard before you can beat them in a fight.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 24, 2012 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Good win but bad game

This team repeatedly plays sloppy hockey and had a bunch of bad penalties (KO, Juice, Martin). I’m concerned that it once again took JT-PAP-MM to provide all of the offense (yes, while on two PPs, I know).

All I want to say is thank God for Nabby. 7-0 in the OT/SO is nothing to sneeze at.

That was awesome...

a reporter said some of his players feel they were playing pretty well…Torts was like “thats why we are a sloppy club”…He then said “tell me who those players are off the record”…

I wish Cappy held his guys as accountable as Torts does…he might be an asshole Ranger but I like his passion…I like his no excuses attitude…

by KO21 on Feb 24, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Problem with asshole coaches

They can alienate their players pretty quickly. Acting like a dick to them may not necessarily get them to perform better.

See: Hunter, Dale.

I think the players understand Torts is all about winning...

Thats the culture he has created…Maybe some day we will have a coach with that kind or spirit…

by KO21 on Feb 24, 2012 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

Cappy's got a different squad

Torts is expected to win now, Capuano is expected to keep developing the team. The Islanders have eight players on their current roster with less than three years of NHL experience, three others in their fourth year. Four different rookies have played for them. Seven different Islanders were born in 1990 or sooner.

The Rangers’ two rookies, Hagelin and Bickel, are 23 and 25, respectively. They have only three 90’s-born players. They have more veterans playing important minutes for them, such as Gaborik and Richards and Callahan and Girardi and Lundqvist. They have the expectation of a deep playoff run, not just building the foundation for future success.

also the Isles were just as sloppy

But cappy said we played a great game…Thats the difference…If Torts’ team won he still would say that his team played sloppy…He wouldnt be in denial, saying we played great just because they won…At least thats what I gather from this guy…

As u can see…I’m not very enamored with our coaching anymore…

by KO21 on Feb 24, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Torts is a different breed of coach

Hell I would love him to be an Islander Coach, that is if he was never a ranger coach. But the fact is, he is loud, no bullshit, say whatever the hell is on his mind coach. His team has been playing his tune this year and they are at the top of the standings.

For Cappy to say we had a good game is to say we just lost the last two games, where we did not score any goals, we had a big rivalry game tonight and managed to come away with 2 points. He is not going to sit infront of the media as a coach who just beat the number 1 team in the conference and say we sucked and so did they, but we won.

by ghalbart on Feb 24, 2012 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I want a different breed of coach for our team is all...

I want accountability to be paramount…If that was the case Rolston would not be playing

by KO21 on Feb 24, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Just remember

He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay and a few years later got canned because he lost the team. The act does wear thin with these guys and he does lose teams rather quickly. He’s got the benefit of being the coach of Dolan’s team so it’s going to take him doing something along the lines of Isiah Thomas level to get him fired.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 24, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

well Tampa was a team with some big Stars

like LeCavalier and St. Louis, who pretty got what they wanted.

The Rangers are a blue collar team for the most part, with Gaborik and Richards (plus Richards knows Torts) as their premier players. The rest of the squad is a very much like a team that would play for Torts and his style.

by ghalbart on Feb 24, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

and really

your coach is not supposed to be your best friend. A coach is somebody who guides you, who you look up to for knowledge, and somebody who can punish you when you are in the wrong, while protecting you while you are in the right. A Respected, Sometimes Hated, but in the end Loved Figure.

by ghalbart on Feb 24, 2012 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I just don’t think that Torts fits that bill overall. I’m not even sure that his players respect him, or hate him for that matter. They might just suffer through him at this point because he keeps getting them to the playoffs. A stunt like tonight (which I didn’t see but had read about in the comments) where he said to the reporter that he wanted names of players who said that they had played well in the first, that kind of thing can alienate a locker room real quick.

However, I’m not saying that the coach should be your best friend, that doesn’t work because then the inmates run the asylum. The coach has to be able to strike a happy medium, and I just don’t think Torts does that.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 24, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

Look at where his team sits in the standings...

if they didnt respect him, they wouldn’t play so hard as a cohesive unit for him…

I agree on accountability and the lack of it

I mean we do not know what goes behind the scenes, but at least for once at a media barrage, like the 6 – 0 loss to the sens at home, just call guys names out. That is already a motivator for them not to suck next game.

PA basically called the whole team out

in his post game, first star on ice interview with ButtGazer. But you’re right, it needs to come from the coaches.

At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
