Bits: Islanders Prospect Talk, NHL Trade Deadline Madness

Well this is awkward.

Beyond last night's 5-1 loss to the Blues, a lot of hot topics making the rounds from the Islanders to the NHL trade deadline, and your usual hockey what-not. Here's a sampling of what has come up from our readers and other contributors:

Star-divide

For you FIG (First Islanders Goal) folks, look for those pools for Saturday and Monday to be posted later today in the FanShots section. I'll be traveling this weekend -- and Monday is a matinee game -- so I wanted to get those up before I forgot.

Hey guys

been readin here for a while and love what you guys are doin so i figured I’d try my hand in posting. Just an idea I’ve had ever since Nash got on the market, think it would do the Isles a bit of good to pick him up? Something like Nino, Dehann, 1st for him. Put him on the wing with Tavares and Moulson and just let them go crazy. Would be a great way to attract the free agent Dmen we need in the offseason. DeHann seems to be a bit undersized and hurt a bit and Nino is no guarantee. A good plan or just a crazy young fans drunk idea?

Welcome, Danny

Thanks for joining.

I think the latter, unfortunately — though I won’t accuse you of drunkenness just yet. Nash’s contract is really tough to swallow, he’s probably a little overrated even if he didn’t make too much for too long, so giving up young prospects and a choice pick would be too much for not enough return, given the Isles budget and needs. He’d certainly help in short term but cost too much in long term assets and salary.

I have to disagree with you on this one Dom

I think Nash would be an awesome pick up and since we really do not have any big contracts besides for DP worth a shot. I also think he stay s tradable next season even if he has an off season. I think he would be a great addition to the JT line, and putting Kyle with PAP and Frans for now would be great

Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all

One thing to keep in mind

Every team in the league carries a few bad contracts, so I am not going to call that a major handicap, but I would argue the amount of money paid out on bad contracts and over-paid contracts has to be kept at a manageable level, and that level will most likely be lower for small market teams who must maximize both asset management and money management.

Barring an amnesty clause in the upcomming CBA this off-season, the Isles will have two bad contracts on the books: Yashin @ 2.2 mil for 3 more years; DP @ 4.5 mil (I’ve read the cap hit is 5.5 mil per) for 9 more years (Not bad considering the number moved off the books the last 3 years);

That’s 6.7 mil per at least for the next 3 years. To take on a contract like Nash’s where said player is overpaid long term, one has to seriously consider the wasted 6.7 mil per, because to commit about the same amount to one player is a risk that if it does not pan out, could kill a small market team for a while.

If I’m taking this gamble, I’m waiting and biding my time for a top Dman in same situation as Nash.

I’m not sure I’d want him at that deal if he was a UFA let alone have to trade assets for him.

Well Nash has a NTC

and I doubt the Isles are on the list of teams he’d be willing to go to – besides we’d probably have to give much more than Nino, Dehann, and one 1st round pick for him. If Nino was having a Skinner first year, maybe – but not with what he has shown thus far…

First time post as well

Live in St. Louis and was at the game Thursday (psyched even though it turned out to be a throw away game) – I live by Lighthouse Hocley to get my beloved Isles news daily – Nash won’t and should not come here – let these kids play, and get rid of all the ex- devils and other mule cap wastes – a lot of NHL fans have no clue what the Islander financial situation is – at least to all the Blues fans that I know of and all they know is that the Islanders are horrible. If a trade needs to be made it is the need for a true puck-moving defenseman (men) and I hate to say it a "Goon player with some sort of physical play. it was so obvious playing a aginst the Blues (I hate to say – but a team that does have a legitimate shot at winning it all this year) that this is truely hindering the growth of our young first line – I hear a lot of negatives about Nino – he looked very strong to me and why not put him on the first line? Okposo looked lost and was pushed off the puck (inconsistent and use him as trade bait). Just my thoughts. Nash to the Islanders – will never happen.

Nino

I brought up Nino’s TOI yesterday. The way management handled him this season has done little to help his progression. He is still young so it will not “ruin” him as a prospect. Next season they must take the appropraite steps to ensure his talents are harnessed and his skills improve significantly.

He is not on Bridgeport’s first line because he is not allowed to be. His junior rights are owned by Portland (WHL) until he is 20. And Portland (WHL) is a waste of time for him.

Even at his TOI, he is presumably getting NHL-level coaching in practice and learning as he goes.

Pandolfo has no future on this team

He’s only here to be a mule. Let Nino play and have Pandolfo scout along with Eaton. Have Rolston join him as well. In order for this team to be a contender we need players who are the future. Until the Mule Caps go away – Isles will never be a contender. Why do other younger players make an impact on their teams? The veterans are contributing and are the core of their individual teams. No veterans (including Striet) are contributing now. What about next year? What 35-39 year old defensemen we going to sign? Let the kids play!

by 9-19-22 on Feb 18, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Agree - Isles need to keep Taveras happy

JT may be signed now – but if this team continues to bring in one year mule caps every year he will move on somewhere else. A good GM needs to think long – term, after all JT is our core player. What is the problem overpaying for one or two puck moving defensemen (If they agree to come)? Can Garth do it? Will Charles W. let him?

by 9-19-22 on Feb 18, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

I have to agree w/ you about Rolston completely.

There’s a lot of controversy among hard core Isles’ fans as to Snow’s ability as GM and Capuano’s as coach. I think one or both are completely ridiculous as far as their assessment of Rolston goes. Not only does he get to play, he’s not even relegated to the 4th line! I checked and Ullstrom has been playing for at least 3 weeks in BP, probably longer, so he obviously is over his concussion. Haley is ok also. How they can continue to give Rolston ANY ice time, much less 3rd line duties is beyond me! Thoughts anyone?

White Flags?

Montreal Hokcey Club moving Gill; currently tied with the Isles
Tampa moving Moore and asking Kubina to waive NTC; curretnly tied with Isles

2 clubs where trading away players may mean less and less points over the next few weeks. If the Sabres are out of it, that leaves the Leafs, Caps and Jets as the only teams to stand between the Isles and the 8 seed.

I still say stand pat and don’t move anyone. Let’s see what this team can do if everyone else around them is trading people left and right.

Botta tweeted a few minutes ago that should the Islanders fail to grab four points from Carolina and Ottawa in the next few days, the sale could commence. That sounds about right to me.

They have Tuesday's game also vs. Buffalo. That will be decision-time, it seems.

After that, they don’t play until vs. Rags Friday, with the deadline coming up the following Monday, I believe. (Isles play Ottawa that Sunday, which would make things very tight, but that game vs. Sens may be the difference between Garth making a trade or not the following day.)

The two trades don’t concern me much. If one team below Winnipeg passes them and somehow catches Toronto or Ottawa, I think the chances of another team below Winnipeg doing the same is very, very low. In other words, I don’t think Montreal or TB would have ended up keeping Isles out of playoffs— but it is/was a possibility.

Good point

That’s three winnable (not easy, but realistic) games. Anything less than five points out of them and they’re probably cooked. That seems harsh, but tough decisions are going to have to be made.

SALE OF WHAT?

Nabby? I’d be really surprised if he didn’t have a price tag on his head from the day he signed. It might just be that the GARAGE SALE can commence. Nabby is not expensive, so their playoff position shouldn’t have made much of a difference.

PA? PAP’s sale should be contingent upon him signing more than his 25 game contribution to a playoff run.

Rolston? How much would they have to pay the wrecker to take him away.

Pandolfo? This one might surprise us… somebody might need a PKer for a playoff run… and we sure as hell could use a 6th round draft pick.

Staios? Can you make snow angels in April… anywhere?

Montoya? Does he come with a can of WD-40, or does the buyer have to supply that themselves?

Who else would you “sell”?

As much as I want a team that can compete for The Cup....

….how ’bout the Isles finish a season above .500 first.

Look at what’s getting moved so far; mid-level Montreal prospects and draft picks. No one is moving a Top 4 D-man for Nabby or PAP. Why not just hold onto what we’ve got through the deadline. Let that be the message to the team. ’It’s now all on YOU if you want to make it to the next level. There is no help coming here. You’ve got ‘X’ amount of games to show you want it. Now get out there are prove it!’

by barry_hal_oliver_24 on Feb 17, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

because it's a short sighted strategy (plus we could still finish above .500 and not make the playoffs)

Maybe there aren’t any top 4 defensemen available right now but in a theoretical situation you are able to move a UFA forward like Parenteau for a 2nd and a 3rd rounder. Now 1 year later there is a guy available and you can use those same picks to swap for a defensemen.

Of course you need to evaluate the opportunity cost of losing any UFA you want to trade. For example it’d probably be worth it to keep Parenteau for the rest of the season if you were only going to get a 6th rounder out of the deal. He is definitely going to fetch more than that in the trade market though. Now with someone like Staios you probably avoid trading him for a bag of pucks because he’s worth more to the team as a warm body to throw out on the ice.

Simply put, trading a UFA who refuses to sign for what you’re willing to offer is a necessary evil. No player should be valued over the long term needs of the organization.

Definitely a poster at Lighthouse Hockey until 2015, then maybe somewhere else.

by ArsenalLI on Feb 17, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Just because you cannot get what you really need does not mean a trade is wrong

You trade an expiring asset like Nabby and get a long term asset (prospect or pick). This team needs to stay focused on the mid to long term. A couple extra wins in a non-playoff season means nothing for this team (and if anything gets us a worse pick). And the extra assets could be bundled later for something better. We got Wiz for a 3rd rounder two offseasons ago who says that pick(s) we get for Nabby cannot be used as an upgrade later?

No Sleep 'til....We Find Some Secondary Scoring

by Anarcurt on Feb 17, 2012 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

This is why I think our current approach is much better

But to be fair, if we trade prospects this time around, they wouldnt be center-piece prospects like they were in the Yashin/Peca/Parrish-Kvasha trades. In any trade we would probably only have to deal two-three out of Bailey, Parenteau, Nino, Lee, Nelson, DeHaan, Mayfield, Kabanov, Petrov or Pedan. That, and ideally, the picks we would be dealing would be made less valuable by the added benefit a star player would bring.

Tavares, Hamonic, MacDonald, Moulson, Okposo, Nielsen, Grabner would all be staying.

BUT, we must crawl first, walk second and run third. This team is getting it done right, sure I would love to see this young team get playoff experience this year, but it is not the end of the world if it does not make the playoffs. by afrosupreme on Feb 17, 2012 4:10 PM EST reply actions

No. But...

The Kings apparently have some quality defensive prospects in their system. Forbert, Voyanov, Muzzin all seem to have bright futures (allegedly, of course).

Johnson’s contract is a beast and a half and runs until 2018 (at $4.3 mil per). Maybe Hamonic or MacDonald could make up for his defensive deficiencies, but’s that’s a long-ass time to have anyone under contract. No NTC, though.

"He's depriving some small village of a pretty good idiot" - Mike Milbury on Ziggy Palffy's agent. On Twitter: @Dan_of_Science

by PGI on Feb 17, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno

It’s not like taking on Nash’s contract ($7.8 million per until he’s 33) or Carter’s (which expires when he’s 37 and is front-loaded). Johnson’s hit (precisely $4,357,143) is lower, only runs until he’s 31, and the actual salary only rises to $5,000,000 on the back end.

It’s the sort of deal that has a few things going for it from the Isles’ perspective:

  • they need a defenseman badly
  • he will be at his peak over the next few years
  • his slightly-lower cap hit relative to his end salary (starting in 2014-15) makes him easier to move later on
  • the Isles have many D prospects who will mature and start to contribute in his place – or make it possible to cut bait on him
  • he might not cost all that much, since the Kings have lots of guys they want to step in

Now, he could just be a high-rent Wisniewski… or he could learn from Streit and Scott Allen and even Hamonic about taking care of his own end, and become quite a bargain over the life of the contract. And he is of an ideal age to take on major minutes (especially on the power play) when Streit begins to wind down. So the question is, what are the Isles willing to risk to buy low on Jack Johnson, to attempt to turn him into a top-2 guy?

Agree with you. Hell no we shouldn't trade for him.

There are just so many reasons not to.
A. We need defensive stability, not another offensive d-man(which we could highly have in DeHaan/Donovan/1st round pick in this draft). And the man has brain farts up the wazoo.
B. The man is signed for 6yrs. He sucks, which he would 2-way and he’d hurt us like he hurts the kings no matter how many 40pts season he puts up, we are stuck with him @$4.4mil for a while).
C. He’s a heavy career negative plus minus player. This guys is the most overrated top 4 d-man in the NHL. He honestly hurts his team more then helps them on the ice. And you never want that from “any” d-man you have let alone a top 4 one.

Nice work

This is sort of along the lines I was thinking, but way more in depth. The upside of taking a shot is you land the kind of guy everyone thinks will never sign here. The downside is if he totally flames out that’s a big chunk of our budget down the crapper.

In reality, I’m guessing it would take PAP and a first, maybe even more. If they could punt it to a 2013 or 14 first, I’d probably be ok with that.

Well

He’s not a goal-scorer, but he is the kind of player who could get scorers scoring. The JFTC article quoted LeBrun with regards to Johnson being “in play”:

The Kings can’t score and must make the playoffs. Lots of pressure there.

Now, he also quotes Burnside:

No matter how much you need offense, it’s nigh on impossible to replace a young, puck-moving defenseman the likes of Johnson.

And Quisp follows that up himself with:

Drew Doughty, Alec Martinez, Slava Voynov, Nicolas Deslauriers, Thomas Hickey. Only three of those guys can, today, do what Johnson does. And/but all but one of them are better defensively.

So obviously he doesn’t think a ton of Johnson (or thinks a lot of the others), for what it’s worth.

by afrosupreme on Feb 17, 2012 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn't that all lead to a long term fix then?

I don’t see them trading a “top 4” d-man signed for half a decade for a rental forward.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

I get the sense LA is interested in any kind of fix to make the playoffs this season.

by afrosupreme on Feb 17, 2012 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

That quote tells me they need to trade Johnson.

If 3 out of your other 5 D can do what he can offensively, and 4 are better defensively, that identifies him as the tradeable asset from an area of obvious depth.

6 years @ $4.4M, probably too much. So no, I guess.

Losing PAP would be a big hit for the Isles because they don’t have a known commodity that could replace him. We can look at guys like Strome or Rhett or whoever we have in BPT or the prospect pool, but none of them are guarenteed. PAP has been a bright spot for this team, and a benefit. Certainly a factor in any success they’ve had the past couple of years. Keeping him is a good idea. However, if that’s not gonna happen, a straight up trade for Johnson may be worth it, if only to later flip Johnson for something else. At least you retain an assest.

Please let Poulin play

Was at the St. Louis game and Monty was horrible. Let our future play tonight. Was talking to a sports photographer who works with the NHL (wearing Islander Blue at the Blues game) and he said Pulin is a stud when playing at Bridgeport, but turns to jelly in his brief NHL experiences. I say let him play the rest of the season and get some experience to get ready for our “playoff push” next season. Monty is not the answer.

I like him, but think Tennant will always be my favorite.

He did it all. Funny, dramatic and badass. I really liked Eccelston – he brought a certain madness and cold-bloodedness I enjoyed, but Tennant was awesome. And Scottish to boot. Also Amy Pond is the best companion of all time (pre-Rory.)

by Les Beaver on Feb 17, 2012 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

Eccelston was great- it was just too short lived. But honestly I OD’ed a bit on Rose with her platinum hair and Matt Moulson eyebrows. Amy Pond on the other hand is frickin awesome.

by TheMetalChick on Feb 18, 2012 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

I liked Rose

but yeah, Amy Pond is better, just the attitude she has. However, the best companion of all time has to be Sarah Jane Smith. If you watch some of her original episodes she was awesome. I liked Tennant the best personally, Eccleston was short-lived but that was on purpose, he didn’t want to be type cast in that role. Tennant just had this frenetic energy about him where he was going a mile a minute and half the time you couldn’t tell what he was saying but you just believed he was right because he’s the Doctor. Still think the Doctor is the most badass sci-fi hero of all time. Any guy who can go into a situation, no matter the odds against him, and solve all the world’s problems with a sonic screwdriver and a look that says, I’m the Doctor and you don’t want to mess with me… well, yeah, badass lol

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 18, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Sarah Jane fan- nice! :)
I love the old episodes- I am a big fan of William Hartnell, and Patrick Troughton too (though SO many of their episodes are lost!) Those guys set the precedent.

I had a tough time accepting Tennant at first only because I really, really liked Eccleson. But it wasnt long before I loved the guy.

by TheMetalChick on Feb 18, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

My girlfriend was the same with Tennant, up to that point she had only seen Eccleston (I actually got her to love Doctor Who lol). She was really upset, I think her exact words were, “well, who the $#!t is this f@#*er?” She watched through the first episode and well, that was the end of that story, now she can’t stand Smith and loves Tennant lol

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 18, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

I know a few newbie reboot Dr Who fans who dont “get” Smith.
I think they need to watch some of the OLD episodes. They need to realize that guys like Eccleston and Tennant did not establish the character, they actually took it in different directions. Smith is actually a lot more like classic Dr Who. Do Who isnt really supposed to be… I dont know… kissable? Sexy?

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Feb 18, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

I liked the old Doctor as well as Eccleston’s and Tennant’s. I think Smith brings a certain amount of gravity, but at the same time, that gravity just isn’t the same when it’s not Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, et al. I love the direction Davies took the series in, but at the same time I love the direction Moffat is taking it in.

On a side note, there is/was a series created by Moffat out there called Sherlock, which is reboot of the Sherlock Holmes stories, setting them in the modern era. It’s very good, and definitely worth watching. You can get it on Netflix streaming, I don’t know if they have discs to rent.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 18, 2012 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

I grew up on Tom Baker

I’ve since grown in appreciation for his predecessors. Hartnell and Troughton are really good, though it’s hard to get used to the humongous traveling party he used to have (two or even three companions!).

New Who… eh… I appreciate the acting but sometimes the writing is quite puzzling. In fact it made me start writing my own stories.

Yeah. Makes one of the top defensive d-men in the NHL look silly then beats a Vezina candidate goalie for the game winner with 5seconds left. He's got ice in his veins.

And imo, is the best overall player in the NHL bar none. Just an incredible package of overall skills and a highlight reel machine.

Would anyone say Crosby is close to Datsyuk in stick skills?

It’s hard to tell. Datsyuk is certainly more of a magician with the puck, but Crosby’s stick work is off the charts too.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Feb 18, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Crosby has great hands, Datsyuk just has better hands. It's not like Crosby is a chump in skills.

Datsyuk is just on another level with his creativity and puck control. There are just some things Datsyuk can do that I think Crosby can only dream about doing, like about a handful of dekes/dangles in this video alone:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkmqJHANjgk

Datsyuk’s puck control in tight places is insane, and his ability to do full extension and “milisecond” dekes/dangles is just out of this world. He literally plays with the puck on a string. And in tight space it’s even more evident. And his puck stealing skills shows even more why he’s a surgeon with the stick. Here’s more examples:

I think he could do decently well with low minutes.

You know, on a team that has four top-4 defensemen. Everyone remembers how good he was for Pens in the playoffs not too long ago. A GM who overvalues playoff experience may give up a 5th rounder for him.

I don't think it's the players...

Long time reader of Lighthouse guys, but never posted before. I have not seen the last few games as I am overseas on business for the next week or so. However, I think for the most part the right players are in place on this team. I would like to see another good 25-30 goal scorer on the second line to spread it out and maybe get rid of the ex-Devil weight, but my issue isn’t with the players. I think the system they are employing is wrong. If you watch the games closely, they have no sustained pressure in the offensive zone. When they gain the zone, it’s either one shot on goal and done, they lose the puck though poor passing/get shoved off of it, or (and this happens the most) a terribly missed shot on goal and out the puck goes. I think back a few years ago when Nolan was coaching. They would cycle the puck down low for what seemed like an eternity. They would wear the opposing team out and get a quality scoring chance. Haven’t seen any of that for a while now. Just my thoughts on the current situation. And coincidentally as we all know, the more time you spend in the opposing team’s zone, the less likely they are to score on you. This theory also goes for the defense as well. It would bring their game up as well, as they wouldn’t be so tired chasing the opposing team around.

by brip20 on Feb 18, 2012 12:51 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Welcome!

Solid points. The first line is decent at cycling the puck, but they like to get the quick shot when they can. The second line is too small to cycle consistently, I feel. Bailey’s line has Rolston. And the 4th line has been cycling better lately, but they are either too slow and not big (Pandolfo, Reasoner) or inexperienced (Nino), and generally not all on the same page.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
