Bridgeport/Islanders Prospect Roundup, Feb. 13: Ty Wishart Recalled

Ty Wishart is about to start his second stint on beautiful Long Island.

In two games this weekend Bridgeport put up an incredible 81 shots, scoring 10 goals. Defensively they only let up 58 shots and allowed 2 goals. To make things even more impressive, it wasn't all Casey Cizikas and Matt Donovan. Scoring came from all over the place, 4 assists from unheralded Kael Mouillierat (give the guy some Likes), a hat trick from fan favorite Micheal Haley and 4 assists from Jon Landry.

BP is picking the right time to get hot as the season winds down. They are 3 points behind rivals Connecticut with 2 games in hand. Although they are in 8th (tied for 7th currently) they have games in hand against 2 of the 3 teams 3 points behind them. With dreams of the playoffs (and possibly Home Ice) in the heads of everyone at BP, they are looking to win their first playoff series since 02-03. That team was lead in scoring by 22 year old Trent Hunter, and backstopped by 20 year old Rick DiPietro. May the future be brighter for the next generation of Sound Tigers in the NHL.

Friday February 11th Vs Springfield (Blue Jackets)

Earlier this season Manny Legace had BP's number. He allowed just 3 goals in 3 games, going 2-1 in those games. Today though was a storm that Legace probably didn't see coming when he strapped on the pads. BP scored 55 seconds into the game from Donovan (Cizikas, Sean Backman) and didn't let up as they outshot Springfield 13-6 in the first. Haley (Mouillierat, Brett Gentile) and Trevor Frischmon (Donovan) also scored. About 4 minutes into the 2nd it was Haley (Steven Olesky, Jeremy Colliton) putting another one home. Although Springfield got on the board, they were buried when Justin DiBenedetto (Mouilierat, Jon Landry) and Ty Wishart (Cizikas, David Ullstrom) scored on PP goals within a minute of each other. Wishart (Donovan, Mouilierat) and Haley (Mouilierat, Landry) scored in the 3rd after Legace was pulled to round out the scoring. 3rd Star Donovan, 2nd Star Wishart, 1st Star Haley. [Highlights]

Saturday February 12th Vs Connecticut (Short Island Smurfs)

Much different game, as goalies Kevin Poulin (27 Saves, 28 Shots) and Chad Johnson (40 Saves, 42 shots) were 1st and 3rd stars respectively. CT opened the scoring, but BP tied it up 5 minutes later from DiBenedetto (Landry, Backman). That was the end of scoring in regulation, CT outshot BP 12-8 in the 1st but BP took over the game with 33 shots in the final 2 periods against 16. 37 seconds into OT and Ullstrom (Landry) won the game and got himself 2nd star of the night honors.

It looks as though Wishart is on his way back to the Island [Update: With Rhett Rakhshani being returned to Bridgeport]. The Islanders are going to need to make a decision on the pending RFA either way, and it's always better to make that decision after seeing a player in the NHL.

Wishart back to the NHL is HUGE. Hopefully Ullstrom and Haley will follow. When is clear day, and what are the chances that the Islanders put Rolston, Staios and Pandolfo on that list? It would be nice to get those guys some playoff experience.

What do you think the odds are that Brock skips his final two years of eligibility for a year of bus rides and then [possibly] the pro game… or are the islanders telling him to sit tight… because they want to start waiting until their prospects are 22/23 to start their NHL careers. We can dream, can’t we?

How much do you think the signing of Parentau weighs in the decision of Petrov to come to North America to join the winning tradition at Bridgeport?

I'd love to have Brock at BPT

But I’d rather they make sure about Lee first because of the escape clause. Brock is stuck with us for a while.

The Petrov question is interesting…This was to some degree my concern about the prospect pool becoming too large. Some of these guys (see Kessel/Gregoire) have to know that it’s a deep pool and because of that, they have leverage because the isles can’t sign everybody. (Particularly the college guys and Europeans). The isles obviously are not going to be breaking bank to get them here either.

The other thing being that other teams aren’t necessarily going to trade for these guys either if there’s a chance they can hit as UFAs because theyre cut or they’re goin to low ball on the offers.

Who can be added to BPT next season?
Likely:
Kabanov, Petrov, Kichton, Persson,
Possible:
Lee, Nelson, Sundstrom,
Following year:
Pedan, Mayfield, Theoret, Russo

That’s an awful lot of space and considering you already have Ullstrom, Wish, Donovan, deHaan, Rakh, DiBo, Colliton, Cizikas, Ness, Katic, and a couple of others you want to hang on to, some tough choices will have to be made.

Just wish that the ones there now had more value or were lighting it up a bit better so they can be moved.

the other thing about BPT

Thompson is a genius – he has Bridgeport playing at a level not seen before – keep an eye on him

He has also been a whiz at finding ECHL talent that can thrive at the AHL level – that’s something like half the team now Moullilerat, Howes, Oleksy, Landry, Gentile etc – some of these 5 if not others may turn out to be prospects for the big club as well – that’s been a big part of the success story of late

i agree with the chick here

the team is using the NHL as his training ground, which i hate them for, but i also don’t see him being at the bridge next year either, unless they pull a bailey, and get him down before he has to clear waivers to go down…

I thought that as well...

but don’t count on it. Nino is likely going to be getting time with grabner and Nielsen by the end of the season… and they are going to rush strome if they can’t come to some agreement with Parentau. Haven’t we seen this enough?
The good thing is that they aren’t force feeding us kabanov. If they’d only come to the realizaton that one goal per game isn’t going to win NHL games they would start the progression into 2012-13. That means no more Rolston, pandolfo, Staios or even Wallace.
They may not score more goals with Haley in the lineup, but they’d lose less fans.

I wonder about Petrov too. If he’s finally getting minutes and playing pretty well in the KHL, is he going to have much interest in coming to play in the AHL? I’d think that would be 50/50 at best. It might only be 50/50 even if he had a guaranteed spot with the big club.

I’m not as worried about space next year though. You figure there are at least 2 forward slots opening up (three if you count Nino’s), and 4 on defense. I’d think all of the forwards and at least one, if not two, on defense will be filled in house.

by afrosupreme on Feb 13, 2012 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

Defence will be tough to fill in house

My prediction is that their next best defensive signing will be the same as their last best defensive signing.
Streit is going to get two more years, because Snow is not going to improve the defensive corps without making a trade. If the trade deadline passes without them trading parentau or Nabby, and they go through draft day without trading some of their forward assets we’re right back where we were before with this defense.
They need to start addressing issues NOW… and that means we need to see Wishart and Donovan. Wishart to finish the season, and Donovan until Hamonic comes back.
Macdonald-Donovan
Streit- Wishart
eaton-jurcina

next year

we have Streit, Amac, Hamonic + Donovan, Ness, de Haan (that’s already 6)

+ decisions to make on Wishart, Jurcina, Katic, Reese

Eaton, Mottau, Staios are all likely goners you would think

those first 10 guys all may have a place still next year – would be nice to get one more big body – easier said than done

I am optimistic next year's D will be better than this year's (not saying much perhaps?)

Locks: Streit, Hamonic, Amac.

Optimistic, but questionable: Donovan, Ness (i’ve seen enough of Ness to know this kid is going to be the iPhone 4S version of Freddy Mac IV….he’s solid….minus the missed coverage yesterday).

You know what you get: Jurcina, Reese

Potential, but highly questionable: deHaan, Wishart, Katic (coming off bad injury)

Conclusion: Bring in 1 FA solid veteran (Staios type, but better and younger) on a short term. Unless of course you can bring in Suter….HA….I can’t believe I said that out loud.

by JPinNYC on Feb 13, 2012 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

on that missed coverage...

i actually think it was miscommunication, it appeared he was going to follow his man across the ice and was yelling to switch, but that didnt happen, and he got back a split second too late… speculation on my part, but that’s how it seemed after replaying it 5 times trying to figure out who’s fault that was…

I was watching that closely too

He was pointing across to his partner on that play once he saw Okposo lose an edge and fall at center ice. That made it a 3-on-2. When they broke through the neutral zone I think Fleischmann fooled Ness by crossing behind Weiss. Ness was going to lock onto Weiss, but broke back (too late) when he noticed Fleischmann cut to the back door.

by Dominik on Feb 13, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, wasn't the easiest play to adjust to.

1) Okposo didn’t need to stretch to make the second-effort stick-check there. If he simply skated back towards his goal after missing on the initial stick-check, it would have been a 3-on-3. (So Okposo read the play badly.)

2) Weiss made a really nice play to cross towards the center and drop the puck off at just the right time. (And the primary assist pass was very nice too.)

3) Moulson seemed to misread the play too. He forgot there was a guy coming off of the bench, it seemed. Had he kept skating and keyed in on the guy coming off the bench, He probably could have disrupted the pass.

4) Ness was caught in between. He let Weiss gain the blue line easily and then lost the man back door. He needed to stop one or the other. (Eaton perhaps played it too softly too, but if he pinched at the blue line, that would have been a risk, especially if Ness decided to pinch too.)

by bob l on Feb 13, 2012 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

realistically...

you can’t go into the UFA period with three decent defensemen and a group that hasn’t played 40 NHL games.
These guys need to be transitioned in as third pairings with “upside”.
Snow has more of a history with signing leftovers like Staios, Eaton, Mottau and Jurcina, than he does with guys like Streit… or should i say, A GUY LIKE STREIT.
That means that we’re looking at an extension for Eaton and/or Jurcina. Hopefully Wishart can play his way into an RFA extension and somewhere along the line Donovan will be prepared to get in a few games by the holidays.
Reese is no better than Eaton, just younger. Ness could be a Jack Hillen type, but with Jack you got somebody who played four years of college hockey and the first 2 games he played after signing you could tell that he could make passes at NHL speed. Ness needs to be in the AHL for at least another year. Why he is up instead of Wishart is a mystery.
So next year count on this:
Macdonald-Hamonic
Streit-Jurcina
Wishart-Katic(hopefully cleared for contact next week)
(Donovan, deHaan, Ness, Reese)
The list of UFA D is pretty attractive, but we are the fat pimply kid who can’t keep his finger out of his nose… so while other teams are dancing with the stars we’ll be lucky to get a handshake from Johnny Oduya.

I guess we'll know by the end of the season whether Wishart can cut it at the NHL level

At the moment, Ness > Wishart. This is Wishart’s last chance to prove his doubters (like me) wrong.

I don’t think it’s safe to assume Katic is ready for NHL 3rd pairing duty either, coming off a shoulder surgery and all. At this point, I’d say Donovan is the front runner.

Would be nice to land another Right handed D-man somehow also. I wouldn’t mind bringing Jurcina back, but I’m hoping there’s an UFA upgrade out there.

Sneaking a guy through the day rosters being set for the start of the season is easier

than at mid-season when injuries have cut down some rosters. And why would you take a chance with waivers just to have him sit in the booth a couple of games? Even if he’s not a top prospect there is nothing gained by taking the chance of loosing him.

Well, the something to be gained would be the chance that another D is injured and Wishart ends up playing.

But I agree with you that it would be foolish to risk losing Wishart right now, since he’s been playing pretty well in BPT. If he really plays badly for Isles, perhaps they risk it. But if he looks like he belongs, I think he stays with Isles through the rest of the season, then hopefully goes back to BPT playoffs.

It's always so much fun

to listen to announcers of other teams. Dude was surprised to see buddy get 5 and a game for railroading
Kabanov in a classic blind side head shot. My instant reaction was “I hope he gets fifteen games more on top”.

I hope I’m not that much of a homer.

staois for laundry soap?

got to change the subject – not normally a Conspiracy theory guy but here goes: more concussions in the past few years came from more wide open play and calling more penalties therefore speeding the game up. Seems like alot less penalties called in the league recently. Do you think the NHL recently told officials to call fewer penalties to allow more holding and stick checking to slow the game down? Protecting the stars. It can’t be a coincidence that all officials swallowed their whistles the past 3 weeks.

Staois for.....

….Fab? Maybe

If that would be enough detergent to take care of other team's color jerseys...

… so that Isles can wear their whites at home again, I think Garth has to pull the trigger.

You got your Wishart, people!

Hopefully Ty did as well. Make the best of your 6’4 frame buddy, cuz WE NEED IT!!

Wouldn’t it be swell if, by the time Hamonic comes back…

Streit Wishart
MacDonald Hamonic
Ness Jurcina

Or…perhaps Katic or de Haan are back to full health by then, and either one of those young fellers or Matt Donovan comes up…hey, maybe we do have a chance to …>pffft<…It’s likely Ty will unimpress again…at least we’re in the playoff bubble, that’s nice…

I thought Ty looked pretty good last season.

I’m excited to see what he can bring.

His first shift should

be to take pride in his Gritz and lay out the first fool who walks in his path. Then later we can post about it and say, wow, he really used his size well on that play and displayed true gritz.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
