Morning notes from Isles and Newsday: Evgeni Nabokov starts. Brian Rolston is in for Rhett Rakhshani. Aaron Ness is to be paired with Andrew MacDonald. Kyle Okposo is to stay on the JT line.

Sounds like Trent Hunter is in for the Isles. And some brother-in-law of Matt Moulson.

The lockout hurt

but I think he always wanted to go back home and was never comfortable here in the US. The Islanders have not overcome the loss of his services since the end of the 2003-2004 season.

Same here

I thought we had loaded up on good young talent:

Jonsson Traded from Toronto Maple Leafs with Sean Haggerty, Darby Hendrickson and round 1 pick in the 1997 draft to New York Islanders for Wendel Clark, Mathieu Schneider and D.J. Smith

The pick ended up being either Luongo or Brewer.

Something I've seen a couple of times that I don't like

it seems like the Kings (fairly often) throw hits while a guy is already engaged with another guy…and often pretty high. Ness just got one, and I think the other was down in the offensive zone. Might have been Rolston, and I think Pandolfo took one like that near the bench.

Just something to look for, but it looks like they’ve been told to throw some weight around today.

Lavi had a career. The guy who won it was Bob Francis for getting the Yotes to the playoffs, and the other Nominees were Ftorek (Bruins) and Sutter (Hawks)

Proving that the Jack Adams Award is a curse. Also this:

On April 26, 2006 Francis signed a two year-contract to coach HIFK in the Finnish SM-liiga. On December 19, 2006 Francis’s contract was terminated

Got to see a lot of Denver v. Minnesota last night. Mayfield looked fairly good. Talent is clearly there. Blocked a few shots, broke up a rush by Bjugstead, and had a primary assist on a PP goal (but it was a softie).

In the second period I almost threw up, a Gopher caught him knee-on-knee (accidental) and he went off for the rest of the period, but he was back in the third and looked fine. Mobile for a big guy, moves the puck crisply. I want to see him a few more times to make sure, but it looked promising.

I'm wondering

I mean, it’s a difficult job and players and coaches constantly adjust to find the soft areas of the officiating.

But league-wide, not just with the Isles (tinfoil!) I’ve seen a lot more lazily called games the past couple of months.

Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.

Is it laziness

Or is it mandated by the NHL? I’m not talking about the “this team needs to win tonight, this team we don’t have to worry about,” mind you. I’m talking about the NHL worrying about the perception that the Refs are deciding games, and so they are reluctant to call penalties when the penalty call could effect the outcome of the game.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Feb 11, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Well

Honestly it makes me think that this is probably a strategy the kings use a lot given their low GA on the season. I mean, again, it’s not something the Isles are adjusting to or using to their advantage, so shame on them, but I just feel like if you try that next week as the Isles, you’ll be penalized for it.

Depends. I mean you can call it LARP’ing, but the big difference is that we are actually trying to educate people on how battles looked back in the period. Markland (the Org I’m in) is actually a not for Profit educational group. Most of the guys I know will get pissed if you call it a LARP, but it seems to be the most common word out there for what we do. Especially since re-enactors are usually what the live steel guys are called.

I think LARP'ing is different

more of a fantasy thing than a re-enactment. My dad used to take my brother and I to Civil War re-enactments all the time when we were younger. I hated it when I was young, but now I find it cool. I don’t know how you could do a medieval re-enactment without quoting Monty Python and the Holy Grail non-stop.

and odds say we don't

This team is not capable of a run as they are short of talent especially scoring talent. I like what I see for the most part but really 2012-2013 is the big picture for me. I would like to see Nabokov traded for a prospect or draft pick so they get value for him that is if he let’s the Isles trade him.

by rickrays on Feb 11, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

But as I was saying....

chances are we wont get much of value that will make a difference

by KO21 on Feb 11, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

What value do you think there is in a third or fourth?

The truth is, the Isles don’t need to restock their system like they did three or four years ago. They won’t miss an extra mid-level pick or B-prospect. I think there’s more value in making a playoff push and using Nabokov to win games rather than just flip him for minimal return. Had the Isles been close last season like they are this season, Roloson wouldn’t have gone anywhere either.

Here's another interesting angle

Is a contender going to sign Nabby for a couple of years at a few million? Chances are, no. So he may not want to move twice and have to go through the free agency saga like that…especially if he really is starting to like it here. It may be just as likely that because he’s older, he doesn’t want to do the nomad thing and wants the stability and paycheck here.

I used to yell at Nyiles at the Coliseum

When Muller held out I’d say that’s Kirk in the costume

I can’t see the rink through your ginormous head!

Washington looking to dump knuble

wouldn’t mind to add him to the team, granted price is right. wouldn’t pay anything more than a 4th rounder for him. Would be a decent fit on that 3rd line.

Good to see Streit get the game winner

I'm watching the Ottawa/Oilers game on the NHL Network

The Sens are wearing their new thirds, the Oilers their old whites. Its good to have good jerseys back.

Rolston 10:38 of ice time

I’ll give him credit for 3 shots and 3 hits but would rather see Rakhshani.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
