Islanders vs. Kings Matinee: Welcome Back Kenny Jonsson, Trent Hunter

This Los Angeles Kings visit comes at the perfect time: It's been way too long since our last on-air Matt Moulson brother-in-law reference.

Islanders (22-23-8, 14th/E) vs. Kings (26-19-10, 7th/W)

There are a few longer-running connections for today's game though, the first being the return of Trent Hunter, who spent a decade in the Islanders organization. Acquired in 2000 for a 4th-round pick, Hunter debuted -- with hair on his head, not on his face -- wearing #43 in the 2002 playoffs. He notched a goal and an assist in his four appearances during that seven-game series. If you have the Islanders Greatest Games DVD, he's in the Bates Penalty Shot game.

Hunter's 2011-12 has been just what you'd fear after the season-ending knee surgery that was likely one reason the Islanders swapped the final two years of his contract for the final one year of Brian Rolston's:

Star-divide

2 goals, 5 assists in 37 games and about 10:11 TOI per game. Hunter's advanced stats indicate he at least holds serve (they were higher earlier in the year) while logging mostly fourth-line duty and getting the second-lowest O-zone starts (45%) on the Kings. But combine his familiar non-streaking foot speed and tendency to shoot (but not always on net) and you can imagine where Kings fans find his presence puzzling.

Still, he apparently still helps move the puck in the right direction, as he did when he was an Islander, and that's probably all you can ask for a fourth-line guy saddled with (even worse?) fourth-line guys.

Kings Notes

It's not even clear Hunter will play tonight -- though you'd hope he would, if it's neither here nor there. Here are a few questions from Rich Hammond with Hunter upon his return.

Mr. Moulson-in-law Jonathan Quick was pulled after two periods in Florida, having conceded two goals on 11 shots. Last season the Islanders beat Quick 3-0, with Al Montoya getting a shutout, Frans Nielsen scoring a shorty, and Moulson potting two.

The Kings have not allowed a first-period goal in nine games.

The Kings made some roster moves, calling up Dwight King and Jordan Nolan, the son of former Islanders coach Ted Nolan. Dropped was Slava Voynov, a good young defenseman who's the victim of roster numbers for now. That's in part because Jarrett Stoll is injured. The new kids are slated to play on Mike Richards' wings. Quisp at JFTC is not impressed by that alignment.

Isles Notes

Other than entering their third full game without top defenseman Travis Hamonic -- who at last report had metal stents in his nose -- the main lineup notes entail the possibility P.A. Parenteau and Kyle Okposo will be swapped again. That would reunite the FNGO unit, as it was in the third period vs. Montreal, and reunite Moulson and John Tavares with Parenteau.

The Islanders officially put Dylan Reese on IR yesterday thanks to his sprained MCL. That creates room for a move soon, whether it be from Bridgeport or from IR, where Marty Reasoner (hand) and Mike Mottau (concussion) remain.

There was also the hint of new defensive pairs by Jack Capuano, though no details were forthcoming. Suffice to say, Hamonic's absence creates challenges on all three pairs. Rookie Aaron Ness has done fine in his first two games, but the Isles are being careful with him which leaves the burden on the remainders. Mark Streit and Andrew MacDonald log a lot and figure out how to work with Milan Jurcina and Steve Staios.

UPDATES vis Isles and Newsday's Arthur Staple: Nabokov in, Brian Rolston back in, Rhett Rakhshani scratched. Kyle Okposo to stay on top line. Ness paired with MacDonald.

Adrian Aucoin on Kenny Jonsson

The bigger return today is Kenny Jonsson, who enters the Islanders Hall of Fame as the designee for the '00s during the 40th anniversary "Decades Nights" series.

Former partner and still active NHLer Adrian Aucoin on Jonsson: "Kenny never made mistakes. ... Probably the steadiest player I've ever played with:"

You can navigate to the five-part interview with Jonsson -- who was a goaltender until age 10 -- on the Islanders homepage and through their IslandersTV channel.

FIG Picks

Leave your First Islanders Goal picks for today's game in this thread.

Win one for the quiet leader, boys. Jonsson did not get a lot of league-wide attention, but the man could play.

In full gear. Probably still be our third best “D” man.

Hunter due for a hat trick

Since Gomez got his first goal since the Stone Age Thursday night, Hunter will likely get the hat or at least the Howe version of it.

It was nice to hear some Isles talk on The Fan

Too bad the interview was so late in the show, they stopped taking callers after that. Isles fans always call in droves when were a topic! Now I wanna hear JT91 on the show.

When I go out on the ice I am at peace. This is my best element. No one can talk to me. No one can bother me. I just go play. That is why I love it so much - Chris Osgood

Those two are barely listenable.

(But thanks for the link! Love that Bossy hardly weight-lifted back in the day.)

breaking up Grabner-Nielsen-PAP

overdue – they haven’t been cutting it

+ boost Nino to line 3 then

Caps a bit slow on this front, but finally he gets it

by Cary K on Feb 11, 2012 9:14 AM EST reply actions

Grabner can use a demotion, imo.

He’s entering Rolston territory on being invisible, and his lack of physicality is scary, even on our team.

How do Islander fans spell hope?

I agree,

Put Nielsen and Grabner on the 3rd line in true, true defensive situations and then let the burst of speed or a pass from the D let Grabner Break out. That is his style for racking up points, on the rush. He is not an Ozone forechecking type of player. He can get to the puck quickly, but if he is second to the puck, he will most likely not keep it unless he pulls a nifty stick check.

I would really like to Ullstrom back up and then put on that line as well. Giving you Grabner, Neilsen, and Umlat.

Except he's still amazing on D.

Unlike Rolston who’s not. Of course, Cappy for some reason thinks Pandolfo is better.

God, the Grabner dislike on this blog is amazing.

Its not dislike...

He gave Isles fans a taste of how dynamic he can be…He has not been close to that this season…Lets be honest…I root for him and hope he becomes that guy again…I think we all feel that way at least…

by KO21 on Feb 11, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

You nailed it KO21--

He’s more or less on pace to have fewer points this year than he had GOALS last year!

He scored a goal tonight...

But BNOY has a point…He has no physical elemant to his game…Maybe he should add that….

by KO21 on Feb 11, 2012 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think that's what you want a speedster to do

He’s better off making everyone chase him.

Seriously, his shooting percentage during his binge last year was off the charts. Expect him to be a 20-30 goal scorer and a 2-way dynamo and we’re golden.

I would like to see Bailey moved up

His line had dominating moments and many scoring opportunities last game and has been pretty consistent minus the scoring touch. He has shown many more flashes of Bailey in the past 10 games then in the past 3 years combined. Kid is getting some confidence every game, maybe its because he sees Sam Gagner suddenly boosting in the charts. He is making plays to the net that are getting opportunities.

I think part of it has to do because of a 3rd line role, he has had to be more physical, thus he no longer winces when driving the play at the net. Kid has mits to make the plays, now he just needs to get on a role and collect. Would like to seem him on a second line eventually with KO and Nino at some point.

by ghalbart on Feb 11, 2012 9:23 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Bailey can move up but not with Rakhshani.

Rakh doesn’t have second-line ability, at least he doesn’t now. Is a Martin-Bailey-Nino line a good gamble for a few games? I’d give it a shot. Nino hasn’t shown much, but then Bossy himself would only have 10 goals playing with Pandolfo. (But then, he’s about 55, right?)

by martylnd on Feb 11, 2012 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

Right,

I would just move Bailey up like I said, and give him a shot with KO and perhaps give Nino a chance at doing something. Nino has been getting his chances, he just has not converted. I think with those two guys on the same line, he would do well.

The only days this year I remember with home whites were Ed Westfall night, Pat Flatley night, and the home game against Toronto in the home and home series. They wore blue for Kenny Morrow.

by dunnowhat2type on Feb 11, 2012 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm

I can’t remember the other two. It was weird about the whites against Toronto…or was one of those Flatley night? Anyway, I think the day games and holiday games are prime time for the third either way when you think of it from a marketing perspective.

Generally increased attendance with a younger audience.

Detroit wore home whites against Anaheim last night

For their 19th “win” in a row.

One lesser yet still annoying drawback to the “every night a winner” NHL – a record unfairly aided by shootout wins.

Toronto series

Both teams wore home whites in the home-and-home series. As far as my memory serves, those are the three games where they wore home whites. I’ve been at every home game this year except two and I tend to notice these things.

What does Oldston contribute?

Head coach Jack Capuano on the team’s recent scoring struggles:

"I thought the Wallace line had some chances and the Josh (Bailey), Matty (Martin) and Rhett (Rakhshani) line had chances as well. We had 21 chances in the game, but it took us the whole game to score a goal."

If what Cappy said is true then why would he bench Rahk in favor of Rolston? I’m all for Rolston being used on the 4th line…But hes a waste of space on a scoring line…I know I’ve said many times that Nino is ready to work with Bailey on the 3rd line…WTF is the point of playing and old guy who cant contribute? I don’t see how this guy is helping in any conceivable way. Except for carrying cap space. He doesn’t contribute on the ice and I don’t see how he’s helping the young guys develop. If anythings hes stunting growth by taking up valuable ice time. This guy is about to retire because he has aged and no longer effective. If they are truly serious about making a playoff run then it makes no sense to play a guy that contributes nothing to help the team win. At least give Nino, Ullstrom, or Rahk a chance to play and gain experience…They just might contribute to socring some point as well instead…They can’t do much worse…

It's Time!

It’s time for the whole entire Islander team, to Put Up or Shut Up! The excuses we played one game and not up for next one. Get physical, skate harder, and shoot the damn puck. If Tavares gets cheap shotted “Toronto Game” the whold damn team should be after the guy. I have the NHL package and have seen worse teams than the Isles who are up in the league standings. Bottom line: Just can’t give points away to lesser teams. It’s an attitude and the coach needs to get the point across!

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
