Islanders Bits: Kevin Poulin Returned to Bridgeport

Update: After the win last night, Kevin Poulin has been returned on loan to AHL Bridgeport.

A sampling of Islanders and NHL coverage below includes Brian Rolston, healthy scratch; Casey Cizikas, Player of the Week; and Marek Zidlicky, Minnesota malcontent with a NTC and one year left on his contract.

Recaps of last night's 5-2 win from: Yours truly | Newsday with a deep recap, including John Tavares on his winner: "I told Matt and Kyle we needed a response." Done, sir. | Canes Country says Canes can't stop Tavares | IPB, with special nod to the ordeal of finding MSG+3k | NYIFYI on JT picking up where he left off | Eyes on Isles on JT's ... hey wait, I'm sensing a theme here.

NHL.com's headline featured Tavares' four points, but also this from Poulin: "The last couple years there have been three goalies here ... When you get the call up, you just have to be ready. I just focus on the game and my team."

Star-divide

More:

Would you check in on what Minnesota might want for a distressed asset in Zidlicky, or does his discontent scare you off and the NTC make you figure this isn't on his list anyway?

Points in January

So just how many points did JT get in January?

I know he had 3 at the beginning of the month and 4 yesterday, and there was at least 1 game where he did not register a point (first TOR game).

Dare to p*o*e*t that pace, and

those are numbers approaching the Eighties’ level of output! 22 X 6 months (approximated) = 132 points (a total that Trottier led the league with one season back then, if I’m not mistaken)…..it’s unlikely JT can maintain such a rate, but…..we CAN dream, y’know…..

He might be happy because he probably wouldn't be scratched.

It’s a risk, but in the “make a stab for an upgrade” category, it might be their best option, depending on MN’s asking price. Him and Streit signed through next year might make a nice bridge.

I had

a thought this morning. We’re all wondering if the Poulin callup means Al or Nabby is possibly on the move, since it really is out of left field. What if they were showcasing Poulin himself?

There’s no way that’s the case, is there?

Was wondering that too

I guess you never know, if someone likes him. TBL wants a long-term solution in goal, maybe they’ve envied him. Just seems like a weird market though, goalies being what they are.

You may be right

I was thinking, “Well, Nabby and Montoya at some point are going to have a ‘rusty’ game anyway, so it really doesn’t solve anything.” But combine that with a possible slow start by Isles skaters after the break and that may have been Isles’ thinking.

Simply because of salaries I don’t think it would make sense to trade Poulin, even if Montoya and Nabby both wanted to stay. Either of those two should cost about $2 mil more than Poulin for next season…. Unless Isles like Nilsson better than Poulin, but I don’t think they do. Plus, when Isles are contenders, Nabby will likely be retired or ineffective whereas Poulin could be a good starting goalie.

This won't be shocking, but ... I didn't have a problem with it at all

I think by our nature we microanalyze some of these decisions that are truly messing around the fringes of what have very minimal odds of making a big difference.

Beyond the possibility of factors we do not see/know (Al tells trainer, “me foot be hurtin’” or Sudsie tells Cappy, “Al needs some separate work”) and any little rewards like, “Sorry we didn’t get you in last time Kevin, but how about a gamer in Carolina”), there are just too many ways these sequences can unfold and be made moot by something like Tavares not scoring or Mottau feeding the opponent’s star in the slot.

I'd have a run at Zidlicky

I know he’s old, but if you can get him for a year or possibly a short extension, he can be a nice bridge until the kids are ready and additional help on the PP and easily upgrades the D. He’s obviously disgruntled, isn’t playing anyway and his value is probably down and he may not cost much.

Minnesota needs forward help right? Prospect or picks could probably get it done. If Wiz was had for a 2nd/5th, would that be enough to get it done? I’d definitely part with that even if it’s for one season. Those picks would take a while to pan out and at some point soon, BPT will be overstocked with prospects…we’ve already seen a couple of players sent to the ECHL, so losing a prospect or two (lower end) may not be a big deal. Maybe Wishart and a 2nd? I’d hate to lose Rhett or Ullstrom, but it’s something you’d have to look into.

Klementyev is done (he's signed in Russia with Lokomotiv next year)

and pretty sure Joensuu has a two year deal in the SEL (or is it Finland?)

I have to think he ends up being worth a similar package to Wiz (or slightly less) given his contract (a little more expensive than when Wiz was traded) and his age. Although his resume is longer.

I just dont want to give up on Wishart yet

I know he was a 2006 pick, but i still have hope that he can end up as a top 4 D man. You have late bloomers, and LATE bloomers and I think WIshart is of the latter. I would rather keep him and give up a combo of our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks than give up ty

So

You think something like a 2nd and a conditional late rounder? I could live with that, though a second might be steep since it’s probably still a top 40 pick.

by afrosupreme on Feb 1, 2012 9:43 AM EST up reply actions

I would, too. For the right price.

And price is a late round or conditional pick. I wouldn’t give up a prospect or a higher pick for him.

He hasn’t played particularly well this season, but from the story it seems like Mike Yeo has tried to shackle him offensively. He won’t have that problem with the Islanders, that’s for sure. Plus, he’s only signed for another year. Which means the Kid’s Krew gets another year at the Bridge. His cap hit isn’t an issue.

But he’s Chuck Fletcher’s problem. Garth doesn’t need to do him any favors.

agreed, 2nd round pick is too much

a top 9 pick should get a good D prospect, if Isles miss playoffs, but the 15 – 22 picks will also feature the next level of top D in this draft. The Isles may very well be planning on moving up in the draft and getting a second D man in this grouping, like Ollie Maata or Slater Koekoek…probably hoping for Morgan Reilly or Griffin Rienhart if they pick top 10 withe their own pick. Anyway, one each form those two pairs would certainly solve the greatest weakness in the prospect pool.

If Isles can get Zidlicky for cheap, I wouldn’t mind, but they already have Streit, AMac, and Reese as small defensemen for next season, in my eyes. It’s not a big need for Isles.

It may make sense if they can get Zidlicky for cheap and then use Streit in a deal for a bigger defenseman or a power forward. (But I’m not thinking Zidlicky could replace what Streit does on the power play.)

Here, he would most likely get Top-4 minutes if paired with Streit, which means we can waive one or two of Mottau, Eaton, or Staios, and honestly, at this point, I feel like he would want to play anywhere where he would be getting good minutes on a team that is playing great hockey

Exactly this

He certainly can’t be worse than any of those guys…and he gives you another PP point man instead of using a forward or Jurcina. Every asset gained makes every other player more expendable in terms of trades to acquire other pieces. This is one of those things.

If he plays well, you keep him around, maybe look to extend him. It also makes it easier to add other D men to trade packages. If he is meh, you only spent picks on him anyway. (If he can be had for picks).

I’d still rather have a big bruising defenseman, but this works too. And again, if you can flip him and a prospect for a shut-down guy, you’re doing well.

Exactly, at this point, he cant hurt us, only help, and I think that the added mentality of throwing him into top 4 minutes saying “look, you are being paired with Streit, do your thing and f**k up people’s s**t” will or could honestly make him want to play better by basically giving a giant FU to the Wild

Any chance of a straight-up Eaton/Zidlicky trade, do you think?

Eaton is a relatively solid guy, likely not to make too much trouble on or off the ice. If Minnesota is looking to shed salary and get rid of someone who wants more time than they’re willing to give, it could be win/win for everyone.

Brooklyn article in NYT NY Metro Section

Testing the Ice Where Hockey Was an Afterthought
with some talk about the Brooklyn Americans.

typically not a lot here:

Mr. Wang declined a request to talk
then
"We already have some of the most passionate fans in the league supporting our young team," Mr. Snow said, "and we are looking forward to expanding our base into Brooklyn."
That was what the owner of the New York Americans, Mervyn Dutton, known as Red, tried to do in 1941. To attract a new fan base that year, Mr. Dutton moved the team’s practice site to the Brooklyn Ice Palace, on Atlantic Avenue between Nostrand and Bedford Avenues, into a dedicated ice rink that has since been torn down. He moved to Brooklyn and had his players do the same. They wore "Brooklyn" across their jerseys, and then crossed the river to play in Manhattan.

ended with:
Robert Sanna, Forest City Ratner’s executive vice president for construction and design development, said the construction team would also have to design additional locker rooms for hockey players." The ice, which will be manufactured in July, will stay underneath the basketball floor permanently.

by noomz on Feb 1, 2012 12:43 PM EST reply actions

Nice catch

This is pretty interesting too:

the seating capacity will be reduced to 14,500 from 18,000 for basketball, which would make it the league’s smallest rink. Retractable seats will mostly be collapsed on one end, closest to the Atlantic Terminal side, and therefore the alignment around the rink will resemble a horseshoe.

So in essence no seats behind one of the goals. That’s sort of fascinating. Also paves the way for all sorts of “lucky horsehoe” headlines down the road.

Doesn't mean NHL team, though

They could host exhibitions, ice shows, skating competitions, and a college team or minor-league franchise. It gives them flexibility on days when the Nets are not playing, at least. Long-term, there are definite concerns that a team would struggle to earn enough when max capacity is 14,500 per home game. That’s something like 3000 fewer seats than a typical NHL rink, and some of these modern buildings seat 20,000 or more. Even if you can’t bank on every seat being sold, that’s something like $75,000 from the tickets, and with concessions that number could easily go over 100K.

I mean, that’s better than four million bucks out the door over the course of a regular season. If the team is good enough to draw like that, figure in at least $1500,000 per home playoff date (the tickets are pricier). We might be talking real money here.

I think most arenas do that

If you have both an NBA and NHL tenant, it’s easier to leave the ice down and put the floor on top, especially on a quick turnaround. It’s too difficult and time-consuming to remake the ice surface each time – you have to freeze the layers properly, re-do the lines and logos and adverts, and keep it at the proper temperature.

This video demonstrates the turnaround very well. That underlayer insulates the ice.

It’s even crazier in arenas that remove some or all of the dasher boards around the court, instead of just the glass and netting.

Drafted first overall in 2000 and handed the keys to the franchise by Charles Wang thanks to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract in 2006, he’s had a bumpy ride to say the least.

He has been successful at times — he was 32-19-9 with a .919 save percentage as the Islanders made the playoffs in 2006-07 and was an All-Star in 2007-08. But since a hip injury suffered during the skills competition of the ’08 All-Star Game, he has been a disappointment.

In addition from the fact that he has played just 34 games since the end of 2007-08, he has also won only two playoff games in 10 years. Recently, injuries have derailed his career to the point that it’s hard to envision him still being with the franchise when his contract runs out in 2022.

DID ANYONE EVER REALLY THINK HE WAS GOING TO ACTUALLY BE HERE IN 2022

It gets even better

Amazing. Leafs get the bad call last night, and 1 night later, are spared a 4-min histick when refs missed Kessel on Letang. Comes around.

How about this though

Steve Dangle Glynn @Steve_Dangle
Despite not allowing a powerplay goal for over a month, the Leafs still have the NHL’s worst PK (75.1%). Columbus is 29th (76.0%).

Well, when you barely have to do any PKs for an entire month, theres little opportunity to improve your team stats.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Still though

You’d almost think that 17 would be at least 10% of your season total. And to put up a goose egg on 10% and still only be at 75% is kind of amazing.

The Pens announcers were going off about it last night

I felt dirty agreeing with them, but they were right.

I guess I knw what was up when that ref from Tornoto called that dive on JT with 3 minutes left in the game in December.

How do Islander fans spell hope?

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
