Bridgeport Highlights: Ullstrom returns with a bang, Nilsson goes 2-0, Nino is Nino

Thor. - Bruce Bennett

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers are 10-4 after Anders Nilsson won his second game of the weekend, a 6-2 rout of Providence.

After another successful weekend, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers are now 10-4, which Michael Fornabaio says is their best start since going 13-4-0-2 in 2008-09 [insert your own quip about the Isles also not playing NHL games that year].

So many things that you would like to see are happening:

  • Nino Niederreiter with a couple more goals (it's an eight-game scoring streak now)
  • Travis Hamonic chipped in anotheravid Ullstrom returning to the lineup and making a difference with a three-point Sunday
  • Anders Nilsson with a shutout (and then another win 18 hours later)
  • Brock Nelson playing key roles -- then drawing a boarding, with Ty Wishart fightng the culprit (and Hamonic scoring the go-ahead goal seconds later).

Matt Watkins had a fine weekend too, with three goals in the final two games. This is all without Casey Cizikas, mind you -- and Ullstrom starting out on the fourth line Sunday. This team has depth.

Saturday night, Max MacKay felt a little more comfortable in his second pro game as the Sound Tigers shut out the Manchester Monarchs. Jack Capuano made an appearance, and it sounds like Brent Thompson and Doug Weight will rotate to the bench (as assistants) from "time to time" to make use of the lockout. So the last three Sound Tigers head coaches will all see time behind the bench of future Isles this season.

Links and notes from that one in this prior LHH thread. A disappointing effort, but the team responded in a big way the rest of the weekend.

With his weekend, Niederreiter takes sole control of the team lead in scoring again, pushing three points ahead of his linemate Nelson with 17 points in 14 games. With 45 shots on goal, and just three of his nine goals coming on the powerplay, several productive signs coming from Bridgeport's #22.
