Ideas to bring success to next season...
Personally - I believe this season is lost. Count on a draft pick between 1st overall to 8th.
I think the Islanders should trade Frans Nielsen and Mark Streit along with the 2012 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks to Anaheim for Bobby Ryan.
We have two 3rd line centers - Nielsen and Bailey, and I'd rather keep Bailey. If we do this trade, next year we draft Ryan Murray, the top defensive prospect. He's 6'0 and 190 lbs. and is being compared to Scott Niedermayer. A staple on the blueline for years to come. It sounds like he will be NHL ready next year.
Also, we need to sign PA Parenteau to a 3 year deal. He works well on any line and is great on the PP with his stickhandling and passing.
Strome should come up next year and replace Nielsen as our 2nd line center. We can add DeHaan to our defensive corps on opening night. Casey Cizikas would graduate to the 4th line and help on the PK.
If all of this were said and done, the 2012-2013 Islanders would look like this:
2012-13 FORWARDS:
Moulson - Tavares - Ryan
Grabner - Strome - Okposo
Parenteau - Bailey - Niederreiter
Martin - Reasoner - Cizikas
2012-13 DEFENSE:
Hamonic - MacDonald
DeHaan - Jurcina
Murray - Donovan/Ness/FA signing/etc.
The other possibility would be to acquire Bobby Ryan by packaging Nino and Frans together with a pick and keeping Streit. Giving us:
2012-13 FORWARDS:
Moulson - Tavares - Ryan
Grabner - Strome - Okposo
Parenteau - Bailey - Martin
Haley - Reasoner - Cizikas
2012-13 DEFENSE:
Streit - MacDonald
DeHaan - Hamonic
Murray - Jurcina/Donovan/Ness/FA signing/etc.

You would be laughed off the phone with that offer...trading an all star for a 3rd li
trading an all star for a 3rd line center, a 35 year old D who is playing poorly and a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick? Take a look at what elite players get in trade…A first round pick, a current high level NHL player (not PAP, think KO) and elite prospect and a second tier prospect (maybe Kabanov?), AT THE VERY LEAST. This is one reason Isles fans get frustrated, they think they could get an elite player for next to nothing…not gonna happen.

If I'm the Ducks, I'd Start the Bidding at Strome for Ryan
And then I’d also ask for somebody like Okposo, Moulson or Grabner, etc.
As much as people here might want Boby Ryan, I don’t think anyone would ultiumately want to pay what it would cost.

kabanov
is gonna be a prime player next year… hes put in his time and he is burning to play in the nhl. If the isles are going to make any trades it will be to bring in some legitimate defensemen instead of 30+ year olds who in their prime where average at best. But i think they will stay put for the most part seeing that De Hann will be here Katic has a chance and they already have most the other D signed. The offense will be solid enough once they get Kabanov/Strome up

Ullstrom and Kabonov on the third line playing with bailey or strome.
Strome or Nielsen on the 2nd line between Nino and Grabs
And your first line as Moulson-JT-and OKie.
The offense is struggling bc our defense blows. Our blue line needs to be overhauled minus Amac and Hammie
If we could actualy chase pucks out of our zone and block them down in the nuetral zone and increase puck possesion, than it spells wonders for our offense. It changes with one stay at home and one puck moving defensemen. Striet is clearly not the same. but still good on a third pairing with Jurcina. Dehaan can move the puck so perhaps Hammie and Amac take over 1/2 and Dehaan learns from the captain. Than we go out and get a number one defensemen either via trade or draft.

Here is the problem...
No matter WHAT Snow does this off-season, there is no way in hell we are getting a top FA, just not going to happen. No one would play here over somewhere else, given a choice. It is unfortunate, but it is true. I also don’t see us making a big time trade. The team will be built on smart waiver grabs, prospects, and FA signings of guys who are underrated but not incredible. Next year I suspect we will see a much younger team. Many of the prospects should see their NHL time next season. Even Snow would have to admit that the Old New Guys have been a failure, and I don’t see him doing that again. The way this team will attract top talent is by putting together a young talented team from within and becoming competitive. If/When we get a new arena secured, top FA will be more likely to sign here, but until then, this is an inside job. We also have to not blame Snow completely for not being able to sign top FA, he has a budget, and there isn’t much here to attract players yet. Thats my take on it.

parise
I know its a pipe dream but its something to keep an eye on…. It doesn’t look like the devils will have the flexibility to bring him back and same as ever the isles will have the cap space to bring in a top FA of course if they can swallow the stadium issues. You never know his dad could have some nice words to say about long island and its fans , he is good friends with Okposo and if someone could get the idea of him and Tavares growing together as a St Luis/Lecalveliar type duo he could be interested. Obviously its dreaming but you never know what can happen when the islanders can put an extra million per year on the table over the competition
i'm partial to dumba at this point
but murray and dumba are the top 2 d so far in the draft
by CanadianIsleslifer on Jan 8, 2012 7:13 PM EST up reply actions
Me too. Dumba fits our team better too because of what we lack.
But I hope this is the year Garth goes for broke at the draft and trades up for a top 2 pick. Not saying give away a lot of our prospects, but I’d give up a lot of picks and even a couple prospects for a shot at Yakupov or Grigorenko, both seem look like 1st line talents and it would be a dream to have another one of those types locked down for a while under RFA.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
dumba
From what I’ve been reading Dumba is by far more dynamic and more physical than Murray (the consensus is a Dion Phaneuf-type player). Would have loved to see him play in World Under 20s but team Canada went with the older team. Issue I have is that I think Dumba is considered young even for this class and is only 17 so we won’t get anything out of him at NHL level for many years. Murray on the other hand just missed the cutoff to be in the top 10 of last year’s draft and can get in the pipeline and in the AHL relatively soon. I think at this make or break stage of the rebuild drafting a 17-year old is just not practical anymore. Unfortunately the arena is also a factor since Murray could potentially be in the NHL before 2015 which is doubtful for Dumba.
Just noticed Dumba
is a teammate of John Persson…may bode well.

Interesting
The Isles do like drafting teammates- not that its a bad idea per se.

We did take Nino who was pretty much 17 too in the draft 2 seasons ago. So it's not out of the question.
And the big thing with Dumba not getting to the nhl would seem to be size, he is said to have great skating ability, smarts, physicality, booming shot, etc, but he is listed at only 6’ 173lbs. So likely, it’s similar to the dehaan situation, we draft him and it likely takes 2yrs(3yrs most) for him to put on enough weight and have an nhl ready body. Nino wasn’t ready this year for the nhl, he neeed 2yrs of development to really be nhl ready, same might be for strome, same was likely for bailey. It’s actually normal for non-190lbs+ or top non-elite draft picks to spend another year or 2 in juniors before they are really nhl ready. Murray doesn’t look bad honestly either, and will probably be nhl ready sooner. Both are on the verge for near identical stat totals in the WHL this year given their goals-pts/gm right now, while dumba is 3rd on his team in +//- with +4 and Murray is 11th on his team with a -7. Personally, I wouldn’t even bring Murray into the nhl, even if his body is nhl ready. Why bring him into a crap storm if we aren’t gonna make a real playoff run? At best murray can play middle pair minutes, only if he is a similar talent to Hedman/Doughty, but most likely he’d play bottom pair minutes and maybe some PP. Not sure you’d want or even start an ELC for that type of situation. We do have DeHaan, who should be starting with the NHL club next year, and if Streit isn’t moved, we should have at least 4 spots filled up already: a-mac/hamonic/streit/dehaan, and likely would want to add a d-man to our team that is better then a MAB-lite type(which murray would likely be). So I’d say it’s best to let whichever d-man we draft(if we draft one) spend another year in juniors. As for forwards, aside from the elite talent(Nail and Grigorenko), it’s probably best to let whichever forward we draft season another year in the minors too.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
the price for bobby ryan would likely be
this year’s first pick, plus strome, nino, kabanov and cazikas

Now you’re going too far in the other direction! At that price, Snow should hang up on them!

Based on how Ryan posterized MacDonald on Friday night
I wouldn’t trade him if a gun was pointed at my head. Murray’s crazy if he dumps any of those guys.
"He's depriving some small village of a pretty good idiot" - Mike Milbury on Ziggy Palffy's agent. On Twitter: @Dan_of_Science
Ryan's gonna be way too costly, but if you really wanted to win next year, I'd say we need:
-Resign PAP and Nielsen
-Sign a 20goal scorer to play in the middle 6 group of forwards.
-Sign Suter “or” sign 2 d-men that can eat 18-21min/gm efficiently while playing against mid-pair competition.
-Pray for Montoya/Poulin pairing in G to produce at least average goaltending and stay healthy.
If we stay healthy, that should get us into the playoffs with a little breathing room. If we battle some injuries, that should makes us a borderline playoff team.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
Trade proposals aside
Strome probably shouldn’t be here next year. But since he probably will be, I guarantee he won’t be capable of replacing Nielsen. 19-20 year olds just don’t do that unless they are once-in-a-generation talents. If Strome is able to play 3C better than Bailey next year that in itself will be an unlikely godsend.
(But to the trade proposal: No way Anaheim wants Nielsen if he’s unsigned, nor Streit carrying the same injury/decline baggage that worries us.)
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
what Anaheim wants
according to Ottawa Sun:
2 #1 picks
2 high-end prospects
For example, the Leafs (Burke) would likely have to part with C Joe Colborne and C Nazem Kadri, along with the draft picks
which sounds like a rebuild to me, even tho Ducks are saying they don’t want to rebuild – yet everyone except Selanne, Koivu and Fowler are supposedly available for trade.
So the last thing they want are Nielsen and Streit. They want to dump some salary and add cheap ELCs. After seeing what happened to Leafs on the Kessel trade, I doubt Garth would give up a potential “Seguin” and a “Dougie Hamilton” plus Strome and whoever for 3 years of Bobby Ryan @ $5.5m.
Ryan is good but he can’t deliver for this team in less than 3 years. Not worth the current asking price. Pass.

You know what
Bailey has found an ability to go to the net a little more lately and also has been hitting and winning board battles. I wouldn’t mind necessarily him shifting over and having a JB/Strome/PAP line with JB taking more of the draws (unless Stome has some kind of godly faceoff gift.
MM/JT/KO
JB/RS/PAP
MG/FN/Nino
MMA/Reasoner/Ullstrom
Unless somehow there’s a Kirill explosion that makes this lineup obsolete, it looks like a good one to me.

No way
It’s going to be awesome:
Suter/Wishart
Hamonic/MacDonald
Streit/de Haan
Reese in the box.
Crazy what a difference one guy would make!
If garth lands suter, I can forgive him for every other mistake he's made as a GM.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
I remember when people didnt know what Garth was gonna do people saying that if Garth drafted Tavares they would never complain about him again lol.
We can see how that worked out lol.

i like the ideas
but i just dont think it could happen unless theres a 1st round draft pick in there, and the way the notsomighty ducks are playing, they might already have a high pick so they wouldnt neccasarily want the pick for ryan.
either way, nice post cousin ken =] (new name same sarcasm person)
Wondering if the Islanders will start calling their goalies Cerberus...
Wishart..............
Would he have to clear waivers if he was called up and then sent back down? If not he might play at least as well as he did last season,- which would be an improvement over Staios, Mottau and Eaton.
I think this off season will be very very interesting
All of a sudden, I think there are the following factors which we have never had before:
(1) A surplus of solid prospects with trade value.
(2) Young players who can crack an NHL lineup, thus eliminating the need to sign geriatric Devils castoffs.
(3) A solid core of proven NHL players who are locked in for several seasons.
These are the kinds of things that a solid UFA might consider. I’m not so sure that a Parise/Suter would dismiss us out of hand any more. Although, frankly, and leaving aside the nostalgia and corrective factor of having Parise, with what we’ve got in the pipeline for forwards, I’d much rather overpay for Suter. And by overpay, I mean, “Make it bloody happen, Garth”.
