Bridgeport/Islanders Prospect Roundup, Jan. 8th

Last week we were talking about how Kevin Poulin looked like he was returning to form. This week Poulin flat out took over as he posted three straight shutouts, breaking Rick DiPietro's old Bridgeport record. In other good news for Islanders prospects Johan Sundstrom had a strong showing as Sweden won the World Juniors. Ryan Strome had 9 points in 6 games for the Bronze winning Canadian team.

Monday January 2nd Vs Worcester (Sharks)

The first shutout for Poulin, as he was also named first star of the night. Casey Cizikas [Rhett Rakhshani, Aaron Ness] opened the scoring. In the 2nd period BP exploded with 3 goals, Tony Romano [Matt Donovan] Kael Mouillierat [Mathieu Aubin] and Rakhashani [Ness, Dylan Reese] were the goal scorers. Rakhashani was named the 2nd star of the night and Ness was 3rd star. Highlights

Wednesday January 4th Vs Manchester (Kings)

Another night, another shutout for Poulin. This time though he was only 2nd star of the night. Sean Backman [Micheal Haley, Romano] got first blood during a 20 shot first period for BP. BP then scored 3 straight PP goals, going 3 for 7 on the PP for the night. Haley [Cizikas, Rahkashani] Romano [Scott Howes, Mouilierat] and Rakhashani [Cizikas, Reese] scored with the man advantage. Haley was named 1st star of the night and Romano 3rd star. Highlights

Saturday January 7th Vs Portland (Coyotes)

Kael Mouilierat must have noticed me complaining about his name last week. Mouilierat scored PP goals to open and close the scoring. Ness and Donovan, Howes and De Haan notched assists on his goals. Rakhashani [Cizikas] and Aubin [Donovan, Mouilierat] had the other goals on the night. Poulin was named first star of the night as he faced over 30 shots for the first time this week. Mouilierat and Donovan were named 2nd and 3rd stars, respectively.

Thank you Kevin Poulin.

After the last two nights we needed some good news. Oh well, looks like another lottery pick.

Sundstrom did look good at the WJC games I saw. Wonder if he’ll be in Bridgeport next year. With a lottery pick the Isles may even have an all swedish line in the future of Ullstrom, Sundstrom and Filip Forsberg.

Now that I think about it, he was invited to camp but didn’t make the team. I was going by my old posts and forgot about that update.

I do hope we bring up some of these guys soon

tempted to take in the Providence game today, but probably not practical

what is the goal of the Islanders this year? There are basically three types of NHL teams this season

1) Leaders who understand that its going to be defense & goaltending first in the playoffs
2) Bubble teams who do enough to make the playoffs, but that’s their ceiling
3) Bottom feeders who can get occasional wins against teams going through the motions

We have been and are squarely a 3) team above – to get to category 2), we need more mobility on defense and solid netminding and get further we need a defensive mentality, system and players, with enough youth & speed, that we simply haven’t been finding – you can see why Tallon cut Grabner, even if was probablyy a mistake

Call up de Haan & Ness at once – consider Donovan – make a determination on Wishart – and get us some stoppers on D as well – hurt guys on D & older guys with no mobility or real desire to play D have been killing us and that’s on Snow

Hopefully Poulin can be our starter next year, and will get some games at the NHL season soon – a Poulin/Nabokov combo is intriguing

Making a move to category 1) above is another question entirely – one that requires a different mindset, skill set, system, general approach including a front office not skimping a la the Wilpons which has seemed at times where we are this season

We have some good pieces that can make us a winner one day, but this season has been one step forward, two steps back in some ways – I feel as if we need to start from Ground Zero on coaching & systems, at least to get us the defensive posture & presence that is required in today’s NHL, and likely tomorrow’s as well

If we take these steps tomorrow, the Detroit game becomes at least interesting – if we do nothing, they will kill us

Another reason to make moves now

by Cary K on Jan 8, 2012 11:05 AM EST reply actions

let me expand on this a bit

identify and cut every player we are definitely not bringing back next year – RIGHT NOW

that’s at minimum something like Eaton, Rolston, Mottau, Pandolfo

replace them with something like de Haan, Cizikas, Ness, Rakhshani

give some of these guys a chance to play NHL games now – see where they are – even if 5 games or so – that wouldn’t hurt their careers in any way

Flip Poulin & Nilsson for a while too

by Cary K on Jan 8, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

i think i'd rather bring up wishart over cdh

let cdh gain more confidence in the A, while we give a true test to wishart in the show to see if we have anthing there.

by DirtyIsle on Jan 8, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Wishart is an RFA at the end of the year, at some point a decision is going to need to be made on him

by Mark D on Jan 8, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

I would too

Honestly, I’m not worried about getting the prospects here now — if one is clearly ready, great. If one needs to be playing with an NHLer (but how many of THOSE do we have on the blueline?) to keep progressing, okay.

But really, we have Reese and a decision looming on Wishart. Start playing them. Force the hand of the incompetent “banged up” NHLers. Replace one stopgap with another and see if you have something.

Why bring Poulin up now?

Just to watch him get lit up like a Christmas tree behind an inferior defense? Nah. Let Poulin dominate in the AHL and see what he can do to make the team next year when we all fall for the same “hope” and “promise” again.

I have faith Montoya will be back shortly.

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...

by Turgeon1992 on Jan 8, 2012 3:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Speaking of:
…Goaltender Al Montoya and forward David Ullstrom, both out since Dec. 21 with concussions, are scheduled to practice with the team Monday. Montoya had been the Isles’ No. 1 goaltender before Evander Kane caught him with a stick to the head in Winnipeg 19 days ago. Montoya had started 10 of the previous 12 games, and the Islanders were 6-4-2 in that span.

Evgeni Nabokov has started the past eight games in goal, and though he looked sharp in winning three straight, he allowed nine goals on only 45 shots in the two losses this past weekend and could use a rest.

Montoya won’t be ready for Tuesday’s visit from the Detroit Red Wings, and Anders Nilsson has been sitting as Nabokov’s backup for two weeks, so he might not be a good choice to play.

But Kevin Poulin, the Isles’ other goaltending prospect, is on a roll for Bridgeport and might, according to a source, get a call-up. Poulin set an organizational record with three consecutive shutouts last week and four consecutive wins overall. Poulin, who started and lost a 3-2 game to the Stars on Dec. 15, his only Islanders appearance this season, has a 2.77 goals-against average for Bridgeport….

Casey

and please bring up Cizikas – the only reason not to is not to start his ELC

does every decision have to do with money and not what’s best for the team?

by Cary K on Jan 8, 2012 11:06 AM EST reply actions

Unfortunately it does...

when the team is losing $10 mil a year and is worth less than when purchased. Money was spent in the early days after CW bought the team, unfortunately MM screwed that up and now, until there is some arena certainty and thus some financial planning possible, I don’t see any change in the focus on keeping costs at a minimum. Thus, any calls for release of players and bringing up other players (which comes at a significant cost) is not likely to happen…we might not like it, but it is the clear economic reality. And, don’t think a phantom local buyer will help things…not gonna happen. Team has even less value than it could given no certainty of where it will play and how that could impact revenues. No one will put up $$ with this level of uncertainty, and CW will not take this much of a financial bath…despite what many people seem to think, he is not an idiot. The team as most value to buyers wanting to move the team elsewhere who likely have a business plan (and arena) in place.

by Nobody77 on Jan 8, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

Cizikas' ELC has already started

So that part is irrelevant, actually. The only time you “slide” ELCs with that <10 NHL games played clause is for 18- or 19-year-old players (CDH in juniors, KO in the AHL at age 19).

The only money “saved” by not promoting a player in his situation is the difference in his pro-rated NHL salary vs. AHL salary.

Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.

Don't rush it or them.

I wouldn’t have a problem with recalling Poulin but, I think we need to stop and not rush prospects to the NHL just because the current NHL team is not going anywhere. Isn’t that what many have said they did with Bailey and now maybe Nino.

I would not have a problem with bringing up Wishart because a decision does need to be made with him. However, maybe the reason he hasn’t been brought up is because he hasn’t earned it. Why is de Haan going to the allstar game and not Wishart.

Don’t rush Cizikas. Look what a full year in the AHL did for Ullstrom. Don’t panic about Nino either. Tyler Seguin played 4th line minutes last year. Plus I wouldn’t mind if Nino started next year in Bridgeport.

Sad to say but this is going to take more time. I don’t expect anything different next year. Maybe Strome will need another year in Jrs along with the Isles 2012 #1 pick too.

The Isles are still a year or two away from any real progress at the NHL level. This is mostly due to the fact that that they can’t sign front line UFA but, I hope they don’t compound this by rushing the prospects.

by John from ATL on Jan 8, 2012 12:58 PM EST reply actions

Yup

I feel the same way. This is beginning to look like a lost season, so what is there to do? If you recall CDH and Cizikas, then you’re doing exactly what Milbury did with his prospects – rushing them to the NHL level when they’re clearly not ready. I would rather see second-year AHL guys like Rahkshani, Wishart, Donovan or Ness in the NHL over CDH and Cizikas. This is gonna be a shitty second half to the season again.

CBA question

It has been written that Lee can opt out of school this year and declare himself free from the Islanders
Can this work with any player in college?
Just read an article on on the Rangers draft pick Kreider. He would be an interesting FA

All the best

by Mulligan on Jan 8, 2012 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Dom knows it better, but basically there’s a loophole if the player played a season of hockey as an 18 year old before they went to college. Kassel and Gregoire had both played amateur hockey as 18 year olds before going to school, which was why they were able to leave school and become FAs.

Lee did play a year of amateur hockey,Nelson and Clark didn’t.

Think what BPT might look like next year when all the forward prospects will get there.

by DavidSweden on Jan 8, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Poulin's streak

has inspired this group in an important way – he’s playing with quality & desparation – very encouraged

end of First Period, and they are doing everything they can to prevent a goal – consistent/constant backchecking by all 12 forwards – intensity by the D – puck mobility keeping play out of their own end

all things the Islanders struggle with the above to their detriment

I have to wonder if Brent Thompson, coach of last year’s ECHL champion Alaska Aces, has a bright future himself – this defense first approach is very encouraging – Brent has a firey side as well, which I like – and he clearly has already been a successful coach – the rest of this Bridgeport season could be interesting to watch after all to see how long they can continue to play this way

de Haan & Ness strike me as the best two D-men here – Donovan appears to need more time, would expect him to be in Bridgeport next year – Wishart reminds me exactly of Jurcina – Olson & Oleksy are solid enough – and it may well help this group to play together as a unit of 6, assuming they keep this up

Cizikas brings an intangible set of skills that you just can’t teach – I’d like to see a player with his fire rub off on his Islander teammates as soon as possible – you just can’t teach what he knows and he’ll never be more than a 20 goal scorer whereever he plays

he reminds me of a combination of Derek Jeter and Butch Goring

the other 11 forwards are all digging in and helping out on D as a first thought

this is a great way to play and Bridgeport is winning regularly through this streak – I hope this experience sticks as a learning exercise – this is how AHL experience can help build future players

but these forwards will not solve our goalscoring, but they won’t have to – I see a lot of future Islanders here helping on D & G, if not some useful Defensive forwards as well

good stuff

Donovan, Ness

Pleasantly surprised with how easilly these two have acclimated offensively to the AHL- that’s no easy nut to crack, especially for defenseman

I’m curious how De Haan (and Donovan and Ness) are playing in their own end on a night to night basis. I’m kind of starting to rethink (again) how high of a ceiling De Haan might have although of course its early, and he’s a rookie.

Of these three, there is only really room for one, maybe two, long term on the same NHL team. It will be interesting to watch how things continue to shake out.

It wouldn’t be crazy to see all 3 of them, although I think Ness is hurt by his size.

I would have to think they're playing pretty well

I mean, almost a 4 game shutout streak and it looks like they’re really limiting SOG against in those games. It’s a great sign!

Im so happy for Kevin Poulin.

He is such a likeable, talented kid! :)

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Just for thought

Not to take anything away from the young players ( especially Poulin),
But I have to ask, maybe the shutout streak has something to do with Coach Thompson and his ability to coach?

I don’t know about the shutout streak, but this sure does sound like that; from Fornabaio’s recap:

Penalty kill is up to 26-for-26, including a four-on-three-turned-five-on-three that included some good blocked shots by Cizikas and de Haan, a few good saves and good work all around.

To balance things out

During the losing streak not only was the PP not scoring, but the PK was getting killed on a regular basis.

To his credit

Maybe he has learned what his players abilities are, and made adjustments to his PK.

How the hell did DeHaan get another injury. Wow.

Anyone who saw or know if it was the same shoulder he already got surgery on?

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

Fornabaio

says it was left shoulder (link in comment above). I don’t remember which one he had injured previously…

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
