’We feel Brooklyn is an untapped hockey market that offers the Islanders with an exciting opportunity to grow its fan base," Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said. "Barclays Center will also afford current Islander fans with great accessibility, as the Long Island Rail Road and nine subway lines will come directly to the arena at the Atlantic Terminal transit hub."

I have a feeling something’s a brewin’.

He makes it sound this isnt just one exhibition game.

Or my apartment. :-D

We have time- we should start some preliminary scouting the bars in the area.

Whoever lives in the vicinity. what bars around there would be amicable to an onslaught of hockey/rock people?

I do! I do!

There are tons. Cross the street and head down 5th ave and you’re good to go.

Good!

Can you name names for any that you might like personally? Maybe that wont play hip hop or electronic crapola (JMO) while we’re all there? Its not always easy to find somewhat rock-friendly bars but Im not gonna get crazy picky about it or anything.

I might have to head up there and do some scouting this summer. If theres a bar we all like, we can ask the Isles to get a few Ice girls there and do some promo or giveaways. We need to pull out all the guns on this. :)

That's no small loss

Not many NHL arenas have good tailgating surroundings these days. Damn parking garages.

Yup.

People will have to tailgate Rags-style… on the LIRR, and then at local bars.

I always found it funny

when the media make a big deal out of tailgating fans in Nashville or Raleigh. Islanders fans have been doing that for years. I remember seeing people out in the parking lot when I was in single digits. I guess anyone covering the Islanders were inside before the games started. But it’s hardly a new phenomenon.

I dont know shit about brklyn

Other than playn some pickup games at city ice pavilion, and drinkn at the brewery, Ive never really hung out there. If Im coming up from the Hud valley, I guess Id take the GWB to the FDR or Hen Hud, head downtown then cross one of the bridges…Imagine trying to make a weeknight game! Id have to leave at like 4:30!

too small

Those rinks are nowhere near NHL-size and setting up temporary seating would probably be a big deal. Rockefeller Center will still have the tree, too, which becomes logistically difficult. It’d be the ultimate New York venue for this, but it’s probably impossible.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
