Commence Roster-Gazing: Islanders Recall Rhett Rakhshani, Kevin Poulin

Rhett Rhetturns.

Just when we'd run out of things to discuss before New York Islanders games resume Tuesday night in Raleigh (where the Carolina Hurricanes have reached an extension with pending UFA Tim Gleason) the Islanders announce the recall of Rhett Rakhshani and Kevin Poulin from Bridgeport.

Marty Reasoner, out since Jan. 6 with a broken hand, officially goes on IR now.

Good for Rakshani (9-16-25), who was on a tear for the suddenly January-loving Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He's overcome early season injuries and hopefully this latest audition will see him stay healthy for a while. Casey Cizikas, on a tear himself most of the season, represents the Sound Tigers in tonight's AHL All-Star Game [televised on MSG+].

No clear reason (yet) why Poulin is recalled, unless some accident or setback befell Al Montoya or Evgeni Nabokov during the break. [Note: Go here for our thread on Montoya and Nabokov, which was quickly bumped by this roster-juggling.] Of course both goalies are pending unrestricted free agents themselves, so the musing about them being in potential trade discussions will continue until the Feb. 27 NHL trade deadline.

Your post-All-Star break maneuvers and line-sketching have begun. Enjoy.

That was the general rule...

for kids who obeyed the rules.
Growing up I don’ tthink the kids I grew up with were rebels as much as they were just stupid. I remember an 8th grader trying to shooti out the windows of PS 226 with a tomato can cannon. He never had a chance to break those reinforced windows with a tennis ball, but he lost all hope when the thing blew up in his hand and he was a 3rd degree burn victim.
We were playing basketball when we heard the explosion.. and like good 6th graders we just laughed our asses off.

Knight Rider, baby

Went through a Dukes of Hazzard and a G.I. Joe one with a cheap but awesome plastic “windshield.”

Rode the crap out of those things commuting through the neighborhood. The wheel would eventually bust through and create a flat “corner” that mandated weeks of begging for a replacement. I suppose that (and possibly the 24th trimester according to JP’s theory) is why they finally got me a used bike.

I had the kind with the hand brake on the back wheel that you could hit and do donuts. My brother had a “CHiPs” one with motorcycle sounds and handbrake.

Definitely much more exciting trio

Add some more offensive punch, at least, seemingly so to the third line. Also Deservingly with the tear he has had. I think at this point after 4 years of college, and a year and half in the AHL, Rhett knows what to do at this level and much like Ullstrom when he came up, will add what Bailey lacks, someone who can skate and put the puck in the net. Well the game after tomorrow is in Ottawa on Friday

So that rules out a simple ‘call him up for insurance’ move. It has to be either that someone is day to day or there may be a trade coming and they wanted to make sure KP makes it to Carolina in time if it goes through. I’m leaning trade as both goalies had a couple days off (though that doesn’t rule out the injury by pancake kind of scenario) and the All-Star Game is a good time for GMs to get together and discuss trades for down the stretch. So I guess this means I won’t be getting any work done the rest of the day while I check twitter every five minutes.

Maybe Cary can answer that...

or if you check with Fornabaio tomorrow you might be able to confirm my assumption. Ullstron is getting some time at center, and the eventual spot for him is the fourth line center with a ceiling of REPLACE NIELSEN.
That would give them something that looks kind of like this next year (plus a BLUE CHIP commodity before the deadline)
Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Grabner-Bailey-Parentau
Nino-Ullstrom-Strome
Martin-Reasoner-Wallace/haley/dibo

If that’s the end game they had better get a something SAAAAWEEET for Frans. If it’s not, then that’s fine, and Reasoner will have more pressure. Ullstrom will be in the NHL next year, but he’ll challenge for either a C or LW postition… whichever is more vital.

the other JP is not going to be happy… actually this will probably make both other JP’s a little nervous.
Rhett may get the RW on the Bailey line, which is great, But I think he will wind up on the fourth line replacing Pandolfo next year. Reasoner in the middle, and guys like Martin, Nino and Ullstrom finding the best fit on LW.

I was in Nashville for his debut last year… which didn’t work ouot so well… and I’m really glad I’m going to be there for his 2012 NHL debut. He may be a minor character in the Islander’s future, but much like Martin, I think I see a lot more in him than most people do because of the backstory. And the backstory reads COACHABLE and FLEXIBLE. Thes are the Tonelli’s and the Hennings on teams that win championships.

Honestly in highlights

Hes looked like a magician with puck possession down there. If he can do that, be fast and back check like an animal here, he upgrades the D like crazy. Think about how good JB and Martin have looke like on the PK, and dream that RR brings more of that to even strength.

I hope that it works…and then they can get working in that 4th line and the 3rd D pairing.

Every time I see him...

his wheels are turning… he reminds me of a slower blake without the puck hog aspect. He’ll definitely improve the Bailey dynamic. As somebody (maybe Ben) suggested, that bailey needs to be more of a shooter by necessity… because it hasn’t been by design (with Comeau, then Rolston).
With Martin creating space this could have some potential. martin also negates a little of the size disadvantage… kind of what Scatchard (who I thought Martin would turn into in the first place) did for Blake.

I had a weird thought the other day

Of trying to make PAP a center and putting Bailey on his wing with Niño or Martin for just those reasons you mention.

Bailey’s shot is pretty dangerous when he takes it. The way PAP controls the puck is outstanding. A big net presence would open things up.

The only downfall is the defensive aspect…which would be less of a concern if they had some remotely adequate blue liners back there.

I never think of PAP @ C

You’d think they’d have tried it by now, somewhere… maybe it has been tried.
Kyle seems to fit that mold a little better, except you lose a little of that grinder board rider part of his game we love.
It’s nice that this move finally opens up so much for discussion though… and if it means that Rolston really is going to get his press creds… then they can play PAP on D for all I care.

Just figured with PAP

He’s a better puk distributor than KO and as you noted, KO a much better boards manager and forechecker.

Considering they aren’t on the same line any more, it’s not a huge issue. And if that experiment worked and FN/MG/DU or RR can be a shut down 3rd line (exclusively without the burden of having to worry about offense), I think you’re looking at a completely different team.

It still bugs me a bit that they really haven’t put anyone with above average offensive ability around Bailey, but hopefully they will start to do that…and there is AHL carryover with the RR chemistry.

Not a bad idea, but...

…PAP likes to play around the perimeter more than most centers. It would be an interesting experiment. How would he adapt to it? Hmmm….

Wonder if his turnoves are part of the fear

Some of his try-to-make-a-play turnovers could be deadly at center instead of just regrettable.

Although he’s been a late-bloomer and under-estimated his whole path, who knows.

is a good one. That’s why I brought up the D pairing thing. I mean, if they could be looked at as exclusively trying crazy stuff with strong D partners, cool…if not, it could get ugly.

To refresh your memory...

Blake was an excellent forechecker.
Got shots off from where ever he could (though not accurately)
Constently agitating.
Excellent one-on-one battler for his size.
Nice speed up the wing. I don’t think Rhett is slow, but he doesn’t have the first stride acceleration that Blake had.
Good hands.
You’d get a full shift out of him every time… unfortunately it was a minute and a half sometimes.
For some reason he always appeared to be the kind of guy that was never invited to the party.

Thanks for fleshing it out.

I was being more of a wise guy, but the three things I remember most of Blake was (1) he worked as hard as any hockey player I’ve seen hounding the puck on D and working hard with the puck, (2) his waterbug quickness/speed, and (3) he was a shoot-first player. Any question in his mind whether to shoot or pass, he’d shoot every time, which I think is much better than the other way around. But I do remember some nice passing as well from Blake.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Jan 30, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

And don't forget

He was great at dashing really quickly into the offensive zone, pulling full stop along the halfboards to watch the defense fly past him, and skating back up to the blue line for a quick pass. I was surprised at just how many times he could do this with the defense being fooled.

Actually, yes there definitely can be, but I held back. He has a point, right? Hasn’t Rhett has concussions in consecutive years? Doesn’t bode well…

Success was survival and, kid, it still is

by IslesFanInNJ on Jan 30, 2012 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

The difference

With DP it is the situation that makes SOME of the comments funny (and that’s just my opinion).
I have a deep respect for a kid like Dipietro who puts in a ton of work just try to get back his potential. But the situation is that he has been a crash test dummie since signing a 15 year contract.
Wishing that on a kid who is trying to get to the surface of his dream is really uncalled for… and it’s been the reply to most of my pro-rhett comments.
JP’s comments have completely ignored the kids history except for one aspect, his injuries. He’s had two shots in the NHL, last year in Nashville, and in camp. Both times he was concussed. Right now that stands as pretty bad luck…. and he keeps fighting his way back for another shot.
Why would you root against that?

Allright dude

You have completely misunderstood me. “Wishing” is not the same thing as “predicting”. I am merely predicting based on his track record. I would not wish a concussion on anyone not named Darcy Tucker, Dale Hunter, or Esa Tikannen (I really hated that guy). I certainly am rooting for the kid – and all Islanders for that matter – to succeed. I hope he proves me wrong. You’re right, his stats – at the AHL level, mind you – have been impressive. I am of the opinion that he will not pan out at the NHL level nor be an integral part o this team’s future. You are of a different opinion. End of story.

by JPinNYC on Jan 30, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Not sure predicting a concussion on someone in their 1st game back is hoping for the best any way you look at it

And given your past comments, you’re more negative on Rakhshani than AP77 is on Bailey, and that’s saying something.

I can see people being cautious about his future because the injury and size, but I can also see reasons why people are high on Rakh. His resume speaks for itself:
-Leads BP in scoring in his rookie year
-Played for Team USA
-Was captain of his college hockey team
-Showed serious chemistry with bailey in the AHL
-Has legit offensive hockey skills/hands and d acumen

He has progressively done everything he has had to do so far to get a real shot at the nhl and become a regular nhler. I personally think as long as Rakh stays healthy, and I think he has a future as a 3rd liner. He’s a good skater, plays determined, and he has solid hockey skills. I think he is gonna surprise a lot of people that look at his size and count him out or that have never heard of him before.

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.
