Is The Queen taking long to get up because of an injury?

Or injured pride, since Gaborik is the one who scored?

Lines were set by the coaches' kids

Todd McLellan’s kids asked the players who they wanted to play with. I wouldn’t surprised to see JT line up with Stamkos at some point just ’cuz.

I love almost all genres of music...But that was not a good version of hip hop, IMHO...

When I was young I was a closed minded metal head…Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies, Megadeth, Priest, Sabbath, etc…These days I can listen to anything if it sounds good…I even love Country…

by KO21 on Jan 30, 2012 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

Me, too

I am waaay more open minded than I used to be- but for the most part, there just isnt that much hip hop or rap that catches my ear and I like it.
When I was in HS? OMG, forget it. If you didnt listen to metal, I had to REALLY like you to be friends with you. In retrospect its so closed minded and silly, but I really had to work on getting over that lol.

I was probably just as closed minded...

silly kids, we were…My friends won tix to Roger Waters, The Wall, @ Yankee Stadium and he’s taking me! Thats gonna me awesome…For some reason even metal heads liked Pink Floyd…which is kind of ironic because its far from heavy.

by KO21 on Jan 31, 2012 8:00 AM EST up reply actions

I saw that show at the Coliseum on the last leg.

It was amazing.
I LOVED it.
It was extra special to see it there since NVMC is one of the relatively few places where they did the original tour. And, as we all know, the place has barely changed since then! It was a total timewarp back to a time when The Wall was the new album, the Islanders were embarking on a dynasty… and I was 6 miles away playing with dolls and crayons and didnt care about either lol.

And youre right- Pink Floyd was always acceptable to metal heads! Youd see a Pink Floyd “The Wall” poster right next to a Metallica “Master of Puppets” poster. I know I did- they were right next to each other in my own bedroom when I was a kid lol. (I still have the posters, too.) :)

I'd rather have hip hop

Than the bizarro techno thumping they had in the background of the introductions for both the Skills Comp and the ASG. Very odd. It seemed like they stole some weird synthetics that had the charm of the music you hear at a Halo menu screen.

And Drake, btw, is typical eclectic Canadian: his dad’s black (from Tennessee, I think), and his mom’s Jewish Canadian. And like most hip hop artists, he was Bar Mitzvahed.

The ironic thing is my 6’3", 300lb friend stood up next to me, wearing his Rangers jersey, and said “he’s with me and if you don’t like it you are messing with not only my Islander fan friend but me as well”…I can hold my own but that guy sat the fuck down in a heart beat..But this was back when the rivalry was still relevent…It was the game where Turgeon scored his 50th goal and the Isles won…

Ok, gents

Had a busy afternoon away from the computer.

How did nobody comment on the name of the guy who sang the Canadian National anthem? Lyndon Slewidge? He gave a great rendition, but my friends and I couldn’t get over that ridiculous name. The US anthem has a gentle unknown with an acoustic guitar, and ‘O Canada’ gets the veteran baritone with the big regimental band. What a spectacle.

Canada is our 51'st state

by KO21 on Jan 30, 2012 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

Absolutely

Not only that, it was in Canada’s capital. I was glad to see the pomp, and apparently Slewidge is a real fixture at Sens games.

I’m not taking away from any celebration of Canada’s national pastime in their national capital, but rather that the juxtaposition of the two anthem singers was quite funny, with the unknown for a quiet US rendition followed by a massive, powerful band-backed O Canada. My brother told me that The Voice is an NBC show, so could have been a bit of cross promotion. But I’m not surprised the Canadians had a nice, big, brash display of pride—they are a very proud country (despite idiotic bashing by Americans), and deservedly so. Oh, and really, Lyndon Slewidge is a name more fit for a Muppet villain than an entertainer.

I really liked both versions, honestly.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Jan 30, 2012 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

He definitely has, I completely agree

I was not only tickled to see the interviews with him and the questions to others about JT, but the rousing ovations he received. And—most importantly—he played well in the skills competition and the game, and no doubt more respect from the casual fan who hasn’t seen JT’s fine development this year.

Reminded me of at least my good ol’ days of having a legit team star in the ASG, like Pierre or Patty, rather than some ‘best of the bunch’ token representative.

But damn, again—can’t he show a bit of his personality when talking with Pierre? Some other guys were very comfortable, smiling and cracking jokes, where JT might have been giving interviews in the 2nd intermission down by one to a division rival….with that level of intensity.

by brother_rat on Jan 30, 2012 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

Those were sad days.

96-97 Penguins had Lemieux, Flyers had Lindros, Rangers had Gretzky, and Islanders had Scott Lachance.

Those teams each still have better All-Stars, thanks to Giroux, but Tavares is quickly closing the gap.

BTW, the Atlantic Division could put together a pretty good all-star team of its own with the likes of Malkin, Giroux, Ovechkin, Tavares, Parise, Gaborik, Richards, Moulson, Jagr, Neal, Callahan, and Semin. I’d take that against any other division’s top 12 forwards. (Sorry Kovalchuk.)

Maguire is a creep

“I love your smile” he says to Gaborik after he wins the MVP. Or asking JT, “What will it be like to play alongside Jason Spezza?” A. they haven’t played together yet, so how is JT gonna know what it’s like? and B. who died and made Jason Spezza Mario Lemeiux? I mean, he’s a nice player and all but c’mon.

Settle down, Pierre. If I was a player, I wouldn’t want to talk to him either.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
