Link in the headline above goes to the rosters and rules and such for the 7 p.m. start. John Tavares is part of the breakaway drill (no, not your average shootout). lefty one-timer, and elimination shootout (tiebreaker?).

If'n you're a-watchin', here you can be a-chattin'.

P.S. Ye gods, Torgo sim'd Keith and Mark's All-Star teams! (Part 1 of his sim is here.)

I know Tavares is the best player in the NHL and everything

but I just hope he doesn’t get embarrassed when he can’t do the trick moves that everyone seems to care about so much. Tavares would rather be an excellent hockey player and have an average trick shot. vs. Rob Schremp who had some amazing trick shots but was an average hockey player. Here’s to Tavares performing adequately!

Did the writer miss the 7th grade sexual element in that last exchange?

… or did he intentionally avoid it? The “You Suck” refers to Smith doing something badly. The riposte “according to people on the street, not as good as you, apparently” obviously refers to a sexual act, in this case, in a homosexual context. Smith must have been really drunk, or else itching to be perma-banned from TV. Here’s hoping he was sober and gets his wish.

Just. Wow.

I have bad news for everybody

We have lost a very important member of the islander family.

Trevor Gillies mustache is gone in Bridgport tonight. They said Trevor said his last words as the stache circled the drain. Friends and family say it was emotional, but Trevor handled it well.

The family asks that in lieu of Flowers, you make a donation to Trevor’s favorite charity.

http://mustachesforkids.org/

Trevor could not be reached for comment, since he is currently working in Syracuse giving people dirty looks and yelling shit only he can really understand.

At the end of the day Chara just simply has a natural advantage

being the tallest player in the league means he also is allowed to use the biggest stick (i believe theres a limit to how long they can be but there was an exception made for Chara).

there wasn't an exception for Chara

while he was with the Islanders, which is why he struggled while on the Island. I think while he was with the Senators they finally let him use a stick that was his size.

Bruce Garrioch says the Islanders are shopping Parenteau and Nielsen. That would suck; I hope he’s wrong- those two need to be resigned, Nielsen in particular.

by Metzfan22 on Jan 28, 2012 10:26 PM EST reply actions

Trade and re-sign...

This coul be a very real scenario. I’m sure Fran’s and pa want to stay. Garth can trade them for rentals and resign them in the summer. I don’t think we’d get anything substantial in return but a small piece, pick or prospect can only further help the organization

by LaFontaine16 on Jan 29, 2012 9:13 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I doubt that will happen...

Fans always suggest this scenario but I don’t think GM’s ever plan on doing this…Its kind of far fetched IMHO…If these guys get traded then they are gone and not coming back…That would suck unless we got a monster Dman in their place…

by KO21 on Jan 29, 2012 12:18 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly.

It just doesnt happen, no matter how often it is suggested.

Garth wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't shopping them

Doesn’t mean they’re goners. But if he can catch someone willing to give up the farm, he’ll have to think about it. Barring that, staying is really the best scenario for everyone.

I really hope not

do you want to risk guys like PAP and Neilsen NOT being able to be re-signed?

There is no guarantee whatsoever that they would re-sign once they leave. I do not want to take that chance….Sign then Garth!!

Interesting snippet

not so much an article, but still interesting. The demise of the Canadien’s franchise ‘began’ with Mike Bossy.

And this also looks like it could be fun...

The NHLPA and RIM are putting together a show that follows 5 NHL players, including Michael Grabner in a 27/7 style coverage.

There is a sneak peak available, and this is the main site for the program.

They promote that event

as being about creativity. When they talked to the players, the players said they’d like a little more lead time in finding out if they are participating in this event, so they can plan and practice some things.

Given the antics of the goalies, there should be some kind of vote for them, as well, next time. Carey Price was better than all of the shooters with his antics. Playing one facing the glass and still making the save??? priceless.

It’s like the slam dunk competition in the NBA. Yeah, you’re just stuffing a ball through a hoop, but it’s the journey to get there that everyone wants to see.

Besides, they do have a ‘real’ shootout at the end, and JT’s skills shone through as he came in a tie for 2nd.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
