GM/Coach Rankings

On Friday, a Comcast Sportsnet story graded the NHL's 30 General Manager and Coach combos from best to worst.

Head of the Class: Ken Holland & Mike "Oh, Goody for You!" Babcock.

Class Drop-Outs: Scott Howson & two weeks of Todd Richards.

Snowuano came in at 28th or, other words, just shy of the top 25 (Again!)

Star-divide

But before you go all Neil Greenberg on the list, a few caveats:

1. It was written for CSN Philly by a Flyers TV guy (the Broad Street Bullies came in 4th, by the way).

2. In a scant five sentences, the guy manages to get about fifty things wrong about the Islanders, including who's on a line together and who they'll be looking to bring back next year on defense (hint: none of the UFAs). I imagine fans of other teams will find similar mistakes in their write-ups.

3. Even the Flyers fans in the comments section are killing this guy.

Anyway, I thought it might make good discussion fodder.

How is he rating these guys? Career accomplishments or the here and now with their current teams?

There is also so much misinformation, where do I start. The obviously wrong isles line(s). And just glancing I here he said Montreal’s only talent to go forward with is Price and Subban, guess he hasn’t heard of Pacioretty and arguably others. Where do I start? lol

What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?

.........

I’ll leave the grading alone, because it varies depending on a lot of things, especially when you combine GM/Coach grades together. So here are the article mistakes I found:

-"Holmgren has set up the franchise down the future with Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn and 23-year-old Hart Trophy candidate Claude Giroux." Too early to say any of them besides Giroux are "key impact players". You can guess, but you can’t say the future is set-up 100% given 2 question marks. Flyers.

-"Wilson has done an outstanding job of drafting good, young forwards." Pavelski, Couture, and Setoguchi(2 of them drated in the top 9 overall). That is it. His best drafting forward accomplishment besides that so far is Jamie Mcginn, a 12min/gm mediocre bottom 6er. I wouldn’t call that outstanding forward drafting. There are a number of other gm’s deserving of that statement ahead of Wilson. Sharks

-"Now, the Blueshirts have a solid defensive corps with Dan Girardi, Marc Staal and Michael Del Zotto." How about McDonagh filling in somewhat spectacularly on top pair minutes with Staal hurt? Rangers.

-"The organization has a great captain in Shane Doan." This fact has nothing to do with the current GM or coach. Doan was here and signed and established before either were here. Coyotes.

-"Despite losing Danny Briere, Brian Campbell and Chris Drury to free agency, the organization has remained competitive." Depends on your definition of competitive. Do you think making the playoffs 2 out of 4yrs is being competitive? They were at the top of the East before that, so it’s hard to say a downfall from a top 2 team in the east to an overall top 10 team in the east as doing a good job of asset management by the Sabres GM.

-"Under Nieuwendyk, Dallas has transitioned from the Mike Modano-Marty Turco era to a gritty, scrappy team under first-year coach Gulutzan" Since Nieuwendyk became GM in 09. He inherited the gritty scrappy Ott, Neal, Morrow, Benn, Ribeiro, Robidas, Fistric, Barch, and he brought in Nystrom/Fiddler. I wouldn’t say he transitioned the team that way, more like he plays the cards he was dealt and continued the team style that he was given. Stars.

-"I believe the decision to reward Dwayne Roloson with one more year instead of pursuing a free-agent goaltender crippled Tampa this season." No. Not addressing the defense correctly crippled Tampa Bay this year. Yes, they overplayed Roloson, and should have been starting Garon more, but having a top 7 defense that includes Brewer, MAB, Brett Clark, Gilroy, and Gervais is kind of asking for problems. They are all fairly sketchy in their own zone and have brain farts aplenty. Lightning.

-"Yet, for some reason they can’t score, ranking dead last in offense." Kings/They were 25th in scoring last year, so that really wasn’t a strong suit going into the season. I’ll explain continuously: they got rid of 23goalscorer Ryan Smyth in the offseason, Penner has sucked offensively since he got there, Gagne has missed 1/3 of the season so far, and Richards has actually helped=on the verge for 28goals before he got hurt. Them having some scoring difficulties this year is actually expected if you did your HW on the Kings and actually look at the team on paper. Kings.

-"MacLean, an assistant under Babcock in Detroit, has helped revive Jason Spezza’s career." Before Maclean=Spezza 30goal/75pts player. After Maclean=Spezza 30goal/75pts player. Maclean had honestly zero effect on Spezza’s numbers, who was always a great forward and never really a slumping one. Senators.

-"Their long-term contracts are locked up in guys who haven’t been difference makers, most notably Alex Tanguay and Jay Bouwmeester." Bouwmeester is a top 30 d-man in the NHL, but Tanguay has been up and down his whole career and is now gonna age, stupid move extending tanguay. Is Bouwmeester overpaid? Yes, but by all means he is a difference making D-man, any top 30 NHL d-man would be. Bouwmeester is a legit top pairing nhl d-man, one of the best defensive d-men in the NHL and a good(but not great) offensive d-man. It’s a huge disgrace to him to not call him a difference maker. Flames.

-"He pulled the trigger on a big trade, landing Dany Heatley, but he doesn’t provide the leadership this team desperately needs." The Wild recently have in the recent past mostly been a borderline playoff team, and "desperate for leadership" isn’t the reason why. It’s their offense, their D has been fairly decent, but they have been a sub-par offensive team for a while. Fix the offense and you can turn the team around, and looking at how the team is set-up right now, they have to make a number of changes to fix that team on its way to a real stanley cup contender offensively. Wild.

-"Despite the presence of Ryan Smyth, the Oilers simply don’t have the right mix of youth and veteran leadership." DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE the Oilers lack. Aside from the fact they are obviously still in the early parts of a rebuild, if the back to back 1st overall picks/worst team in the league facts didn’t tell you that. Not a mix of youth and vets at all. The offense looks like it’s on it’s way to being more than solid in a few years, but the defense is barren of high-end D prospects to help fix that issue/weakness. That could be solved by picking up a top 4 d-man or 2, but at this stage in the rebuild, the oilers should stay pat. Oilers.

-"Their top line of John Tavares, Matt Moulson and Michael Grabner can strike at any time." Top lines have been JT/MM/PAP or JT/MM/Okposo. Grabs was very briefly experimented with on the top line, but it was never something that lasted worth mentioning.

-"Outside of goaltender Carey Price and perhaps P.K. Subban, there are very few building blocks within the Canadiens’ organization." Just Price and Subban? Wrong. Pacioretty is a young 25-30goal scoring forward, Gorges is a top 4 d-man locked up for over half a decade, and Lars Eller is at minimum gonna be a 3rd line 2-way forward(possibly top 6) . And even Plekanec is signed and should have another good 5yrs in him. I don’t think they have tons of talent, but they aren’t barren with young talent and definitely have more young talent than just Subban and Price (altogether, they have "young": a franchise goalie, a top pairing d-man(subban), a top 4 d-man (gorges), a 25-30goal scorer(Pacioretty), and a top 9-top 6 2-way forward(Eller) . I wouldn’t say they have few building blocks, they just aren’t completely stacked. Habs.

Haha

Game, set, match: Ozzy.

So, what you're saying is...

this list isn’t 100% accurate?

(Seriously, the Staal, Doan, Nieuwendyk and Habs entries are ridiculous.)

I gotta say, with the exception of Burke / Wilson (which may actually be correct)

The Top 10 looks pretty good to me. Sucks seeing Sather AND Torts having success though.

"How will they rebuild their defense with five UFA defensemen?"

In any way that does not involve those five UFAs. (OK, maybe bringing back Juice and Reese… but bye bye Steattau.)

So no mention of MM or Grabs waiver pickups....

Yet the DiP contract is mentioned first in the comments for Snow. That was so not Snow’s baby. Snow was basically just the obstetrician delivering it to the world. Snow’s legacy is still being built, and the pieces are still being assembled. Wait until Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas, Big Brock Nelson and the Kirills arrive, then we’ll see what they say about Snow then.
As for Cappy, as long as he keeps the guys loose and stays away from any more fishing shows, he’s good in my book. Everything he’s doing is slowly turning to gold.

Fools and thieves are well disguised in the temples and marketplace.

Moulson wasnt a waiver pickup.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
