by garik16 on Jan 24, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's that so much

As just seeing if a bigger body would help out. Yeah the chemistry was there with Parenteau but Okposo has a bigger body and is more apt to get to the corners and is stronger on the point. His game seems to fit better with Tavares and Moulson. I also think that putting Parenteau on the second line with Frans and Grabs makes that line a bit better, even though Okposo’s style would lend itself to those two guys getting open more than Parenteau’s puck handling.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Jan 24, 2012 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yay, personal opinions!

Like I said, there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Okposo switch has helped JT-MM, or FN-Grabs. JT-MM have been producing ALL year, regardless of linemate. FN has been the super sturdy defender all year (Grabs is another question).

You like Okposo because you’ve been told about him being a star for so long, but he hasn’t ADDED anything. It’s all just biased opinion.

by IDCWhoYouLike on Jan 24, 2012 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yay, soapboxes!

Why nitpick every time someone says something nice about Okposo? It only comes off as your own personal bias-driven agenda.

And projecting that someone else likes a player “because you’ve been told about him being a star” is even worse: Don’t act like the cold, impartial arbiter of truth and in the same breath put B.S. into someone else’s mouth.

Net Stability would help the Islanders:

And then showing how the Isles have used 5 goalies this year, ignoring that 3 of them had minimum time played (unlike last year) and that Nabokov and Montoya have played a majority of the games.

Probably didn’t get as many subscribers as he thought, and had to know that people were going to create another way to get the same stats. Most likely he had a downturn of traffic which cost him ad revenue that wasn’t made up by subscribers.

It’s funny cause I found a 2007 post by him asking HF boards if they would pay for the stats he eventually put together. I think it was mostly no.

The big problem is the stuff that leads to game-winning goals.

That’s the stuff I can’t just deal with because it puts the team I love in no position to get better in the standings. One or two non-calls (even that lead to goals) are not a big deal so long as the competition isn’t sacrificed.

You cannot convince me that the refs simply don’t call penalties for the Islanders. This can’t be happenstance or just a weird coincidence. It’s something that is real and palpable and clear to anyone watching these games with an objective eye.

And the worst part is, they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Capuano yelling won’t solve anything. Fighting won’t solve anything. I feel so frustrated right now I could explode.

That OT goal was the icing on the cake

Why was it a 2 on 1? Because 1 of the 2 Isles back (forgive me I was at the game and missed exactly who it was) was fucking knocked over before the play got there. Its fucking interference. NO CALL.

they didn’t call the islanders for phantom penatlies, because that woudl just be a waste of time… the leafs can’t score on the PP anyway… so if you let the boys play… WIN WIN… but they only sent the memo to the leafs.

I dunno...

I hate talkin about the refs, cuz they almost always do an OK job…but god, I can’t help but notice an apparent bias towards the Islanders. I’m not saying we are the only team who ever got bad calls, get bad calls presently and ever WILL get bad calls, but damn. It feels like all season long, and its just really discouraging/detrimental/damaging to a young team like the Isles who are trying hard night in and night out to establish themselves in the NHL.

Bias against the Isles, not for...

I can honestly say there has been no game in which there was a boas FOR the Islanders. Seriously. They are either fair games or we get the short end of the stick. On this H&H however, the stick got shoved right up the Isles collective ass.

JT should go

the All-Star game is a fluff piece designed for the fans to enjoy the stars of the game and it is an honor to go regardless of how NHL officiating has screwed over your team. There are generally no/few penalties in the All-Star game (although, Hartnell).

As for Tim Thomas, a man who objects going to the White House for an honor that is not at all political, while having expressed his admiration of Glenn Beck, a caricature of an overblown gasbag of a psychotic who ruffles feathers over the least harmful of events…well, that’s just stupid. (IMO)

If they don't want to get clobbered

Then clobber back. Didn’t they learn from last year? We can’t expect protection from refs (although tonight was ridiculous), so we have to do it ourselves. We have the guys to do it, just not here.

How telling is it that the only time Bailey can score is when he is not saddled with the Mule? Even one man down is better than skating with Rolston. C’mon Garth, open your eyes and do the right thing already. Bring up Ullstrom to skate with Frans and Martin and move Bailey up with PAP and Grabs. Neilson is not a 2nd line center. It’s time to the 2nd half of the season to see if Bailey is. Just can’t continue with thses same shitty lines.

Despite the very frustrating last 2 games, the 2nd half could be fun if they bring up some balls and some talent, including some dmen, cut loose the dead weight and let the youth be served.

by randyboyd on Jan 24, 2012 10:07 PM EST reply actions

For the record

there are a few comments over at PPP saying the Leafs got away with a number of penalties. That’s how you know it’s bad – when the guys who won the game notice it, too. Apparently, they played a game against Ottawa where the same thing happened to the Leafs, so they’re taking the karma route.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
