I should check the schedule more often

By the time I realized it’s a matinee, I already had agreed to dinner with friends. I’ll send positive thoughts while eating a delicious pizza in Italy :)

Yeah, these sneak up on you

But they’re usually the same U.S holidays each year: Columbus, MLK, Presidents, if I’m remembering right.

My two teams square off

My favorite team is the Islanders
My second favorite team is the Predators
I am rooting for a close game and no injures.
I am wearing my Preds gear at the Coli tho.
That feels weird to me.
I had Isles season tickets for 9 seasons.

Yeah

I was just in Nashville for a Predator vs Wild game and had a great time so I adopted the Preds as my second favorite team. Got a hat and jersey while down there so I figured I would wear my Preds gear.

by Alex Kinkead on Jan 16, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

I went to a Preds game once

They really put on a good time down in Nashville. The game I went to was a Ducks-Predators game in the 2005-06 season.

My second team tends to be a Western Conference team, and that usually changes every few years. It was the Preds for a while, now it’s the L.A. Kings. I also have an affinity towards the Buffalo Sabres, but I really bleed Islanders blue and orange blood and cry Islanders blue and orange tears.

Good news / bad news

The good news: as a Time Warner customer, i can finally watch an
Isles game today!

The bad news: the game was made possible because my grandma fell today and got Islander Hip. Waiting by the phone for calls fom the hospital so i can go and visit her.

Islander Hip has spread past the team and fans to fans’ loved ones. Be careful out there people!

Meanwhile, FIG for both this game and the prior one will be updated tonight. I likely won’t have much time to comment during the game (in fact i was looking forward to commenting on On the Forecheck for parts of this game, I like tose guys).

Go Isles!

I'd have to go Fischler

I can actually follow his logic a little better than Cherry’s, however it would be close, like a 1 goal differential (if we’re using hockey terminology). Cherry just seems to have tangents he goes off on while he’s making the thought, and while Fischler has the same… well they seem at least germane to the overall point… lol

by NHL fan on Jan 16, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

I guess it depends on who makes those decisions

If it’s the Isles, then it’s probably cheaper to put a team up in the hotel right next to the arena (and this is certainly a budget-conscious organization)

If it’s the visiting team, then the Isles probably need to get the hotel torn down. Otherwise, a relatively out-of-the-way hotel right next to the rink seems pretty perfect if I’m coaching that road team

by Dr. Copp on Jan 16, 2012 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Lots of visiting players complain about nothing to do on Long Island

I think they just see the Coliseum, the hotel and whatever roads they take to and from the airport.

Goal driven stats, yes.

Shot driven stats are okay, but I’m still very hesitant to use them. There’s a reason people tend to stick to even strength stats.

So then what is the case for a player

who is a good penalty killer? Or a good power play unit?

by afrosupreme on Jan 16, 2012 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

This is where scouting is really important

Since they can pick up the talent faster than we can rely on stats to see what’s luck and what isn’t.

But I generally try and rely upon the same shot-based stats as even strength…just prefer to not assume it’s true talent if not over multiple seasons.

For example, Grabner last year was arguably the best PKer in the NHL. This year’s he’s fallen back a good bit to around #25. His true talent is probably closer to #25 (a pretty good PKer), but I still can’t say if that’s true. (The stats this year argue that Rolston has been a good PKer….but he’s got 1/3 of the sample size of Grabner this year, so I trust those….not at all)

OK

I mean, my guess without doing any math is that over an entire career, a guy probably doesn’t even experience an entire season’s worth of ice time on special teams. So I thought the answer might be watching the games (scouting), but I was wondering if there was something useful to back that up or not.

Basically in the era of free agency though, what you’re saying is it’s impossible to put stock into any team stats regarding special teams.

by afrosupreme on Jan 16, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty damn tough, yeah.

Yet another reason why EV stats are so important – while good PP/PK results can lift a team which is mediocre or slightly below average at EV (or poor special teams can do the opposite), the ability to predict Special Teams results and acquire players who will result in good special teams is so limited so as to make it impossible to really succeed that way consistently year in and year out.

Baseball analogy – think of a team with mediocre starters who tries to survive with an amazing bullpen. Unless you can clone Mariano 5 times, odds are good the bullpen could in fact be terrible. Just too small a sample to determine true talent and to prevent random fluctuations from making even talented players not have bad results.

but you specifically mentioned “somebody who can handle the puck”. Are you talking about trading him for a guy with a better ability to handle the puck?

Point is, why would another GM do that? Besides that, he’s not really been the problem today at all according to the statsheet. The team had three defensive brain farts, fell behind and are now being clamped down on by one of (classically), one of the best defensive teams in the league.

Just have a problem suggesting a guy on pace for 70+ points being suggested for trade for a better possession player when clearly, there aren’t a whole lot of those around.

Gillies wouldn't pound on the guy who elbowed JT today.

They guy isn’t a heavyweight. Gillieis wouldn’t go after him. Neither would Haley. They only participate in staged fights with other heavyweights or lightweights. When has Gillies gone after someone who wasn’t a heavyweight? Answer: HE DOESN’T

Yeah, once

Liten, I understand what you guys are saying. It is frustrating to see the lack of fire that Gillies brings. It needs to come from the other guys, however. Gillies and Haley are not good hockey players. We need guys like KO, Bailey, JT, PAP, Hammer, Martin to step up and defend themselves if there needs to be defending. The days of the enforcer are over. You can’t have a roster spot given to a guy who plays 2 mins a game an who fights.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

I like

old time hockey too, however Haley is not the answer right now.
36 games in 3 yrs with 3 points and 122 pim is NOT what this tem needs. We struggle 5 on 5 bad enough. No reason to to play 4 on-5.
If he had some more offensive upside or learns some in BP it would be a different story.

I wouldn't

I’d prefer Ullstrom or Rahkshani or DiBennedetto over them. I don’t want to replace one broken part with another. Haley is not the long term answer, and never will be. Rahkshani or Ullstrom or Dibo might be, so I’d rather see them.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

on Pandolpho. Reasoner, in a different role has 18 pim and five points in 28 more games. (Haley 7 gm, 0 pts., 28 pim) so I’m not sure. Rolston’s stats even surprise me 36 games, 8 pts and 4 pim. All 3 have made some real bonehead plays that vet’s should not make. Haley makes them too! Let him (hopefully) learn in BP not to make those and improve his offensive play there this year.

This

Players need to be able to take care of themselves, fight through physical play and let their skill dominate proceedings

Increased success on the PP will also deter some physical play, but then again, there is only so much deterrence for the dirtiest of attempts

by Dr. Copp on Jan 16, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

That's absolutly untrue...

Gillies and Haley, especially, Haley, do not only do staged fights..

by KO21 on Jan 16, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

But they don't just fight people who wrong our good players

It doesn’t happen. I know we think it does, but it really doesn’t. If someone hits one of our guys, Gillies or Haley will go after their goon/enforcer/heavyweight. They will very rarely go after the guy who actually did the crime.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Dude, relax

I’m not saying I have all the facts. I wish I had a memory good enough to remember every single game, but I don’t.

For the most part, the big fighters only fight the big fighters. Also, Gillies and Haley are not good hockey players. The bottom line is the guys who have the skill need to defend themselves.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying that

I just don’t see the point of dressing a guy that will only play for 2 minutes and go out there to fight. I also don’t see the point of dressing guys like Wallace, Staios, Eaton, Mottau, Rolston, but we do. And honestly, they’re bad, but they (with the exception of Wallace, in my opinion) bring more to the table than Haley or Gillies.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But, on any given day, he brings more to the Islanders than Gillies or Haley. He does. He sucks, I hate him and I wish he was gone, but he’s still better than Haley or Gillies. I would rather se Rahkshani or Ullstrom in his spot, but I don’t make that decision.

I don't know

And I don’t pretend to know. I have no idea what the players think. I wish I did, but I don’t. Maybe you’re right. I don’t think the players hate Rolston, but I don’t pretend to know that.

Honestly, I don’t know if I like the fact that they need to feel protected to play better. I think that means we have drafted a soft bunch of guys who aren’t willing to fight for themselves. That’s what they need in order to get better.

by billymac23 on Jan 16, 2012 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

The only thing that's gonna keep JT safe

Is JT. He’s a really tough kid. He’s keep going, and doesn’t really have any quit in him. That’s the only thing that will keep him safe.

Any opposing team will look to keep JT off the scoreboard. The best way to do that is to hit him. I don’t think many teams take liberties with him, but there are a few exceptions. However, Haley and Gillies will not deter that.

JT has to keep playing his game, and becoming a beast. He’s been getting more calls lately, and as he further emerges, he will get more. Then, he will make opponents pay by scoring on them. That’s how he’ll be left alone.

I have to agree

Wallace started stronger, he has the occasional hit, and he does hustle his but off, but he hasn’t been as noticeable. The whole fourth line as currently constructed is struggling a bit. Nino makes the occasional good move, but he follows it up with two bad passes to the other team. Kid needs more time to cook, Pandalfo needs to hang em up, Wallace prolly needs to let someone else try his role.

by GreekIsles83 on Jan 16, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Which could be a problem in how he is being used

Nino is supposed to be a skilled guy, he probably should be playing with some more skillful players and more than fourth line time. But at the same time, I do see him as a bit of a liability right now. Too many rookie mistakes. You mitigate it by putting him on the fourth line. Islanders really are kind caught on this one. I really see next year as a year for Nino’s development (either AHL or third line).

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
