Bridgeport/Islanders Prospect Roundup, Jan. 15th

Matt Donovan laughs at your attempts to stop him

Wow, what a difference a month can make.

The Sound Tigers went with just 2 wins during the month of December. Now halfway through January they have yet to lose a game, going 6-0. They were helped by Kevin Poulin's return to form, Rhett Rakhshani's return to the lineup, Matt Donovan's sudden offensive explosion and Casey Cizikas flat out being dominating. Anders Nilsson did a fine job filling in for Poulin this week, allowing 4 goals on 51 shots in 2 games.

Rakhshani had 10 points in his first 16 games this season, already has 10 points just 6 games into this month. Donovan meanwhile had 12 points through his first 32 games this season, now has 8 points and a +5 this month. Cizikas ,who has been strong all season, has 6 points this month and his +6 doubles his +/- for the season. His +12 leads the team, followed by Rakhshani at +9. Among rookies, Cizikas is 10 in the AHL in points and Donovan is tied for 22nd. Donovan is 14th in points among defenseman.

Sunday Jan 9th Vs Providence (Bruins)

Poulin's shutout streak came to an end 3 minutes into the second on a goal by Calle Ridderwall. No one held the lead for long in this game as Ridderwall's goal came less then a minute after Tony Romano (Sean Backman, Scott Howes) put BP on the board. Cizikas (Rakhshani, Donovan) scored to make it 2-1 in the 3rd, but Ridderwall answered again a few minutes later. BP won the shootout 4-1, Cizikas was named 2nd star, Romano 3rd star. [Highlights]

Star-divide

Friday Jan 13th Vs Manchester (Kings)

The first period ended with Manchester up 1-0 despite shots being even 8-8. That was as good as it got for them, as BP buried Jeff Zatkoff with 30 shots over the next two periods while holding Manchester to just 10. Rakshani (Aaron Ness, Donovan) and David Ullstrom (Jon Landry, Scott Howes) scored in the 2nd. In the 3rd Tyler McNeely (Rakhshani, Donovan) scored and Rakhshani (Trevor Frischmon, Cizikas) got the empty netter insurance goal. Rakhshani was named 1st star of the night, McNeely 2nd star of the night. Highlights

Saturday Jan 14th Vs Providence (Bruins)

Bridgeport put up 31 shots, scoring a goal in each period. Donovan (Rakhshani, McNeely) scored in the first to tie things up at 1. In the 2nd David Ullstrom (Kael Mouillierat, Scott Howes) scored in the 2nd to give BP a 2-1 lead. In the 3rd Trevor Frischmon (Brett Gentile, Tomas Marcinko) got the insurance goal. Important because Calle Ridderwall scored just 20 seconds later to make it a 3-2 game. Frischmon was named 1st star, Ullstrom was named 2nd star.

Is Koskinnen likely to come back next season?

It seems like we’ll need him, but (assuming Poulin/Montoya in the NHL) will he come back to (most likely) start at the Bridge?

Our sudden lack of depth in goal, assuming the departures of Nabby and DiPi is most disconcerting.

Nice to see

he’s tearing it up anyway.

Hopefully The Saga of Rick DiPietro comes to and end and Mikko and Nilsson can be the tandem at BP. Really that should be the case even if DP doesn’t retire. They can bury him at BP until he figures it out.

by afrosupreme on Jan 15, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

They'll need to qualify him just to keep his rights

Creates an interesting dilemma. On the surface it’s not bad to have a goalie property housed in Europe just because it’s so hard to get all your prospects playing time. But I wonder whether he’ll want to return.

Probably more money playing in NA then Finland. He’s dominating because there’s almost no talent in that league.

Almost no talent?

That’s very insulting to the SM-liiga. The money is more than decent in Finland; not NHL kinda money, but definitely more than in the AHL.
Europeans generally have a low opinion of the AHL. If there’s no chance of playing in the NHL, the AHL is not a desired option. I think he’s gone.

The quality of play is obviously lightyears away from the NHL and the KHL is also taking away a good chunk of players, but the SM-Liiga is still a good league. Something they don’t lack is certainly talent. The problem is they can’t keep elite players long term.
Regarding Joensuu, I think his better play in the SEL has everything to do with bigger ice. The game is less physical and once you have the puck, you have more time with it. Nobody is going to knock you off the puck almost at the same moment as you receive it.

If there’s no chance of playing in the NHL

I don’t think that would be the case with Koskinen, but maybe. The thing is, there isn’t really a way to know if you have no chance at all, especially if you’re a goalie, and the quickest road there is via the AHL.

by afrosupreme on Jan 15, 2012 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

and (sorry this must be said)

The Isles are definitely going to be calling up goalies from the AHL, so it’s a good reason to come over. Goalies who are capable of playing in the NHL credibly while still wavier-exempt, are gold. Mikko would have a good chance of contributing on the top level if he re-signed.

A lot of teams use three keepers during a season. And AHL play does get a goalie used to the narrower rink and different angles.

We may be in the box, but you get the penalty.

There's definitively a chance of occasional recalls,

but that doesn’t change the fact that he is the 6th goalie in the depth chart. Probably the 5th next season. The first two months of the season were a clear signal to Koskinen of what the organization thinks of him. Given his lengthy injury history, has he still the will of hanging around the AHL for a couple more years?

the 6th goalie in the depth chart. Probably the 5th next season

True, although he’d already be up to 4th now with two guys hurt, and possibly would have stayed 4th if Nabokov is traded. If he outplayed Nilsson, he could have made his way to 3.

Now sure, if DP comes back next year, there’s a chance he slips to 5 again, but really that is just 4.5 until DP goes down for the year again. And it would likely be #2 at BP which offers the chance to move up.

Thanks...

Win over Bison Blades(nets me a free happy hour next week), BPT rolling and the Giants in GB for capper.. who could ask for a better weekend?

What are your thoughts on these second half trades?
1. Ullstrom for Pandolfo… creates fourth line of Nino-Ullstrom-Wallace
2. Donovan for Staios… Macamonic, Streitcina, DoneEaton.
3. Rhett for Rolston… (more likely Wallace) Nino-Ullstrom-Rhett

If they make those moves, and they’re successful they will rest a lot easier over the summer. Donovan probably needs more time in the A, but I had a feeling he was going to outshine all other defensive prospects sooner or later. If they fail in the UFA world again, maybe we see Done Wishin’ as a third pair next year.

agreed

here’s what I’d like to see ASAP

Moulson-Tavares-Okposo
Grabner-Nielsen-PAP
Martin-Bailey-Niederreiter
Ullstrom-Cizikas-Rakhshani

Streit-Jucrina
Amac-Hamonic
Donovan-Reese

Nabokov/Poulin

that takes out Rolston, Pandolfo, Staios, Eaton, Wallace, Reasoner – send em all down to BPT to pick up on the good energy happening down there – though Rolston’s selfish style would ruin that vibe

can we please do this now or do we simply not care about this season vs budget issues – really a shame

by Cary K on Jan 15, 2012 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed...

I would be excited to watch that down the stretch, but I suspect we will have to wait until next year.

by CloseCallJiggs on Jan 15, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree...

He has been more valuable than Pandolfo in terms of the impact of the fourth line. You can look at a common denominator in Reasoner to back up that assessment. With Pandolfo Reasoner looked like he was headed for early retirement. With Wallace he has turned it around, and that line was becoming more productive.
Let’s not forget that we are talking about a fourth line… Wallace plays good physical hockey consistent with his role, has way more upside than Pandolfo, and has the wheels to play fill-in post PP.
He’s actually just what they signed him to be.. a good depth forward. As Bridgeport starts to reagain health we may see different faces in that role, but I wouldn’t discount what wallace has brought to the team.

is out… and signed through next year. he’s not going anywhere. Pandolfo and Wallace are really the only two spots available, as I don’t think they will let $5M sit in the press box or in BPT until much later in the season. Rushing Casey is not justification for either move at this point.
Do you know what the timetables are for Colliton, Dibo and Katic?

RUB Line

I wouldn’t mind seeing it either. But it’s more likely to be Rolston-Ullstrom-Rhett if it happens this year. That would move Nino up to the RW with Martin and Bailey.
I just can’t see the team that waved 2.5M for NOTHING letting $5M sit in the press box, or go down to BPT.

The way Streit has played D, and Donovan's ability to play the "off" D side

I’d be curious in say, the last 20 games, to see Streit and Donovan as a second, offensive and neutral zone pairing, behind Amac and Hamonic.

Agree with adding Casey, and the rest looks interesting. Why not have a look.

And hits pretty good

I think he is BPT eligible next season (he will be 20 in June). He has a 60+point jump in production (as a D man is crazy) between his sophomore and junior years. He is obviously a puck mover and he leads his team in scoring right now. There is really nobody notable on that team, so while his scoring is down a bit off of last year’s pace, he looks to be doing it alone.

I kind of can’t wait to see how he looks…may be a steal as a 5th rounder.

Don't think

Mayfield and Sundström will be at BPT next season. Neither seems ready to take that step. Expect both to make at least one more season at their respective clubs.

Regarding Kichton. Think this guy might be a steal, looks to be a very good puck-mover. And as I said in a post a couple of days ago, BPT will be very interesting next season. Players who could join them:

Petrov
Kabanov
Nino
John Persson
Nelson
Lee
Kichton
Pedan (?)

add players like Poulin/Nilsson/Koskinen, Cizikas, Donovan, de Haan, Ness, Katic and the future looks bright. Some of them will probably graduate (Poulin/Donovan/Cizikas).

Disappointed what happened to McNeely this season

I know he’s small and not much is expected of him at all expectation wise, but after his 10 game stint at the end of last season where he averaged more than a point a game, I thought we may have had a hidden gem in him. His production this year I guess has shed light on what he is, an average AHL player.

its officially a juggernaut

Bridgeport headed for its 7th win in a row today –
another goal for Casey & Rhett each – two new PTO defensemen from the ECHL are also playing well/
Gentile with his first goal today – they have 7 healthy defensemen all playing well – call one up please and play them & Reese – stop playing Eaton immediately, he is a stiff

they had to cut a half way decent forward (Aubin) recently as well as they are running out of room for players – bring up a bunch of these guys

Thompson also juggling lines – showing that unlike Capuano, he has a brain and a plan and sees the valuae in trying different combos regularly – Cappy is happy when lines don’t score apparently

KK I would think is a 2nd liner, but don’t quote me.

Doesn’t look like UND tracks TOI, but given that he’s leading the team in scoring, you’d guess Brock is getting some pretty big minutes. Additionally, 9 of his 16 goals are on the PP, so probably safe to assume he’s on the first unit.

I can’t find good stats for the Q. The official league site stinks, and the team sites redirect there.

At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
