Breaking #Isles news: Rick DiPietro to have surgery Tuesday to repair a sports hernia. Season likely done.

Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday 2m
Best-case scenario for DiPietro is back by beginning of April. He's played 47 games the last 4 seasons. This is his 6th surgery since 2008.

Here's the real punchline

@StapeNewsday 6m

DiPietro tells Newsday no plans to retire: “Nothing like that has even crossed my mind… I know I can play.” #Isles

It's just comes off cocky, conceited, and really discredits his character

When he can’t acknowledge that:

A) he can never ever stay healthy
B) even if he is, he just isn’t the same goalie at all anymore.. Probably the least-skilled in our organization

by BaltimoreIslander on Jan 13, 2012 5:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I disagree.

It comes off as determination coupled with denial.

I cant blame the guy for thinking “THIS time things will be different!”
I just dont believe it will be.

But its also selfish...

He needs to step away and ride into the Long Island Sunset…Thanks for, eh???

by KO21 on Jan 13, 2012 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s one of those things he’ll re-evaluate when everything is done. I don’t expect him to say he’s planing to retire mid season.

Yup.

Did Sillinger just have surgery and retire? Nope- he had the surgery with the intention of returning to play.

At this point, the Isles would have to BEG him to NOT retire.

At least not until the end of the season. They simply can’t find another $3-4 million or so to get to the floor midway through the year.

(It IS around $3-14 million they’d have to cover, right, our resident cap experts?)

Yet another Moulson brother-in-law.

by ICanSeeForIslesAndIsles on Jan 13, 2012 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

The Isles could take a 4.5 million cap hit right now

according to capgeek. Also, his salary would be prorated to account for games played thus far…it wouldn’t be the full amount.

Not that I’m saying he should or should not retire right this second…just that the Isles have built up some cap equity right now. If I had my druthers, I’d much rather either Mark Eaton or Rolston retire.

NY Islanders, just one irrational free agent signing away from contention!

I know I can play

See, the thing is Rick, that’s where you’re wrong. You can’t play. You haven’t been able to play. And you’re never going to be able to play.

Hopefully we have enough salary next year that the thought might cross his mind on a bus ride across Connecticut.

No kidding

“I thought it would just go away.”

C’mon, Rick.

I actually have some sympathy for that part

I’ve had a nagging groin injury get better (seemingly) and then morph into the same situation. Now both conditions feel intrinsically connected.

These symptoms in particular sneak up on you
A sports hernia typically begins with a slow onset of aching pain in the lower abdominal region. Symptoms may include: Pain in the lower abdomen, pain in the groin…

I'm referring to the thought his injury would get better without surgery

This is actually classic sports hernia circumstances.

He still has nine years left on his contract and said he has no plans to retire. “Nothing like that has even crossed my mind,” he said. “Knock on wood, the doctors have said this is something you can come back from, lots of athletes have. I know I still want to play.”
Since playing 63 games in the 2007-08 season — one that ended in March for DiPietro, as he underwent hip surgery — he has played a total of 47 games over the last four seasons and just eight this season. He had another surgery on his hip and one on his left knee in the summer of 2008, a second knee surgery in January of 2009 and surgery to repair facial fractures after a fight with Penguins goaltender Brent Johnson last February.

Yes Rick, the doctors say that players come back from HERNIA Surgery, not when you include the 7 other surgeries you’ve had…

by KO21 on Jan 13, 2012 7:36 PM EST reply actions

No idea

It’s not something they’d ever air publicly at this point if they did, because they’re all closed-circle/tight like that.

Someone mentioned Sillinger before — he got the same HIPPA-esque public treatment even though it appeared clear when he was shut down mid-season that this was probably it.

Kudos to Staple for putting it in public circulation with RDP, Snow and by proxy Wang though. Now they may not have “broached” it, but it’s been broached by their beat reporter.

by TheMetalChick on Jan 14, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Obviously...But he had drafted several in high draft positions..

In order to hedge DP’s decline…I wish DP would show some humility himself and take the noose off the orgs and his team mates necks…Thats just how I feel…

by KO21 on Jan 14, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I think so. My suspicion

Is the last several years (drafting goalies high, carrying 3 and 6 pro goalies into the season, slipping “knee swelling” into injury updates) have been building up to the inevitability when RDP probably realizes on his own that it won’t happen.

They (be it Wang, Snow, all of the above, or maybe it’s where Wang and Snow disagree) have some respect or special relationship with RDP and they’re stuck with the contract in every other alternative (buyout, AHL burial), so it seems like they’ve been insuring themselves while slowly directing toward that conclusion.

Snow and Wang each have their own sort of “keep it in house” mentality about information that looks bad or dire upon one of their own, so they probably take pains not to embarrass RDP while also preparing for the moment when the bandaid is ripped off. I guess that includes not putting him under more “why not retire?” scrutiny.

Not sure if as afro proposed there might be some insurance reasons for playing to a certain script, too.

Thing is, POSTING IN ALL CAPS is normally interpreted as e-yelling.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
