Bridgeport/Islanders Prospect Roundup, Jan. 1st
Just as a bit of a note, I am writing this before all of Saturday nights games are concluded (or at least those games that are happening) so feel free to update scores in the comments. JP knows where I live, and if I don't have the prospect report out for him to enjoy with his Sunday morning coffee, bad things will happen to me. Kidding, kidding, I enjoy that so many of you look forward to this, as it started basically as a shot in the dark.
Oh Bridgeport, your such a tease. Early on you were looking good, even floating around .500 and looking like a playoff appearance was possible. You've now lost 12 of the last 14 games, and of those losses only 2 of them were OTLs. At least this week it was respectable with a win over the hated Connecticut Whale. The team has a young defense, an offense that is hurting due to the lack of David Ullstrom and Tim Wallace (both PPG players in the AHL) and dual struggling goalies.
Sunday December 18th Vs Providence (Bruins)
There's one story here and it's Kevin Poulin making 37 saves on 39 shots to give BP a chance in this game. Poulin was also named 3rd star of the night. Special teams killed again as Providence went 2/7 on the PP and BP went 0/5 on their chances. Casey Cizikas led all BP shooters with 6 shots. Highlights
Monday December 26th Vs Connecticut (Smurfs)
Another outstanding game for Poulin, with 30 saves on 32 shots including a perfect 3rd frame in which the team was out shot 12-5. Rhett Rakhshani [Cizikas] opened the scoring in the first. The Whale scored the next two goals in a span of 6 minutes during the 2nd. BP struck back behind Scott Howes [Rakhshani, Cizikas] and Tomas Marcinko [Trevor Frischmon, Brett Riley]. Marcinko was named 1st star and Rakhshani 2nd star. Highlights
Wednesday December 28th Vs Norfolk (Lightning)
Poulin continued his hot streak, stopping 17 of 19 shots. The special teams continued to let the team down, going 0/6 on the PP while giving up a PP goal during a 5 on 3 (Norfolk was 1/6 on the PP). Brett Gallant scored the lone goal, assisted by Marcinko and Antony Klementyev. Including the game against Connecticut, the BP PP is 0/11 so far. Highlights
Friday December 30th Vs Norfolk
A wild game between these two teams as they racked up 18 PPs, along with a total of 72 PIM. Tough game for Poulin as he gave up 3 goals on 17 shots, with 2 of them on PPs and the other a 4 on 4. No give up in the team though as they charged out for 2 PP goals within 2 minutes of each other during the 3rd. Casey Cizikas had the first goal [Calvin De Haan, Ty Wishart] and Tony Romano [Aaron Ness, Dylan Reese] the second but it was too little too late. Tomas Marcinko was also seriously injured due to a skate striking his neck, and was rushed to the hospital. He's in good shape and should recover fine.
Saturday December 31st Vs Wilkes-Barre (Penguins)
4-2 loss and it wasn't even that close. Tyler McNeely [Rakhashani, Cizikas] scored to cut it to 2-1 in the 2nd. Kael Mouillierat (I hate that name) [Rakhshani, McNeely] scored in the 3rd to cut it to 4-2. Surprised to see Poulin starting again, he stopped 28 of 32 shots. BP managed 16 shots on former SoundTiger Scott Munroe. BP managed only 3 shots in the 3rd and were 0/4 on the PP.

Natural Born Kirills
Kirill Petrov added 2 assists this week, he now has 10 goals, 9 assists for 19 points in 35 games.
Kirill Kabanov had 3 assists in 3 games this week and was named 3rd star of the night in a 2 assist performance. On the year he has 13 goals, 14 assists in 24 games. [Might be the strangest video I've linked NSFW]
CHL
Ryan Strome is at the WJC, and here's some highlights of his goals. Vs Switzerland Vs Finland Vs Czech Republic
Mitchell Therot had no points in 3 games for Niagra.
John Persson had 1 assist in 3 games for Red Deer.
Brenden Kitchon had an assist in 2 games for Spokane.
Andrey Pedan is at the WJCs and I don't have any highlights.

*Rosen Plays 101 is popular
Notre Dame routed Boston U 5-2 behind 2 goals from Anders Lee and Robbie Russo notching an assist.
Brock Nelson had a tough night Friday, allowing Harvard to come back for a 4-4 tie, while Nelson was held off the score sheet he was also a -3 on the night. Up 6-2 going into the third, North Dakota has things in hand, but no points for Nelson.
Wisconsin is currently playing the US under 18 team in an exhibition. No points for Clark.
Denver is dominating Air Force 7-1 in the 3rd, no points for Mayfield. Denver beat Union 3-1, Mayfield had no points but was a +1 on the night.
Cody Rosen started a game for Clarkson, as Paul Karpowich was unable to travel with the team due to the flu. Rosen got the first start on Thursday, unfortunately Clarkson was coming off a 18 day layoff and Rosen let up 4 goals on 19 shots and was pulled halfway through the 2nd. Senior backup Richie Laveau started Saturdays game was hardly better making 23 saves on 28 shots.
Finnish Loans & Trust
Mikko Koskinen played 1 game this week, in 9 games he's got a 1.46 GAA and .940 SV% and is 6-1-1.
Jesse Joensuu has 10 goals and 10 assists in 29 games.

my first reaction to that was
oh my god the world is really ending this year
What do Frans Nielsen, Scooby Doo, and Hamlet all have in common? They're Great Danes.
Bridgeport
between injuries and callups, there’s no offense
the D is solid and promising, and Poulin is getting some good experience, but tihs team has hardly anyone who can put a puck in a net
not an ideal place for Cizikas to learn anything useful – wish they’d call him up
yeah and once you call cizijas up
Everyone will say snow rushed and ruined him.

What do you guys think the odds are Strome is ready next year for the nhl?
I think main thing that’s holding him back was size and strength, so if he came into camp at say, 192-200lbs as I think he will, I think he makes the team. The hands are there, the skating speed is there, the commitment to pay D is there. What do you guys think? I’d guess it’s 50/50 for now on him making the team next year.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
I think his odds are 50/50
Pronman wrote that Strome’s OHL numbers are down from last year cuz he’s focusing on the D end of his game. He looks great at the WJC – fits right in on the most dominant line in the tourney (Russian line only comp.) and was put on the ice for the final faceoff with < minute left before they beat US. Let’s see how the rest of this tourney goes, and also how he finishes his OHL season/playoffs/hopefully Memorial Cup.
Next season is looking VERY interesting:
- Nino – will he play with top 6? In which league, AHL or NHL? (NHL)
- Kabanov – same question. (AHL)
- If Strome makes the team, will he get the Nino/Seguin treatment (4th line?) Do we want that? (sure)
- What will Brock Nelson do next year? (hopefully AHL)
- Kirill Petrov? (hopefully AHL)
I’m gonna bet Ryan Strome makes the team next year, plays on the 4th line, and as he adjusts to the NHL, perhaps mid-season the Isles deal one of their centers (Frans) or wingers (PAP) and move Strome up a line or two. Not that I have any friggin idea, but it’s damn fun to ponder…
"Seriously that's the last time you guys f#@%ing won?" -RSH (about beating the Penguins in '93)
I think
Nino is obviously NHL unless he really has a bad camp
Kabanov is AHL bound
Strome probably gets treated like Nino this year
Brock will probably spend another year at school.
Petrov might make the NHL team.

And I'm so happy JT is heating up, and we are playing some bad teams in the next few games.
We could be on the verge of a winning streak that turns this season around!

is this comment just to hit your quota on comments for the day?

lol. Nah, I'm just trying to add some optimism and decided to post it here.

Can Petrov Join the Islanders This Year After His KHL Season Ends?
Dopey Larry Brooks said that a KHL team would be unlikely to pick up any part of Avery’s salary if he goes to the KHL because they only have 15 games left on their schedule.
That got me thinking. If Petrov’s contract expires at the end of this KHL season with time remaining in the NHL or AHL schedules, can or will he be signed and brought over this year?
Eh...
It’s tricky because of the whole playing in Europe thing, plus it’s 15 games in the regular season plus however deep AK Bars goes in the Gagarin Cup. They are the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference and I would expect a fairly deep playoff run from them. AK Bars’ season probably go until mid-March to late-March. That would leave roughly 2 weeks or so left in the AHL regular season.
Also he won’t see NHL ice this year because he would have to go through waivers in order to play since he began the season in Europe. As for the AHL, I believe it could be done but I don’t think that’s been the Isles MO with European based prospects who weren’t out on loan as part of their ELCs. The Isles have done that in the past, but only players returning from a European club on a loan such as Robin Figren in 2008-2009.

True- but if it is a question of Petrov wanting to do it, and the Isles wanting to get him under contract (and squelch another KHL deal) it is a possibility.
Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

He probably should also adjust to NA sized rinks for angles/shots/boards/etc.
Some AHL time would probably go a long way for a player like Petrov. It’s not like he’s a d-man or elite talent and can adjust on the run extremely smoothly. Not to mention, NA has a longer game schedule then the KHL.
What do you mean they won 4 cups in a row? Is that possible?
The Europe clause - does it apply to your defected draft picks?
Was wondering if waivers are required of free agents who start the year in Europe — definitely not rights-owned players on loan, but maybe unsigned/defected prospects too? I know Kruger joined Chicago, but he was already under ELC so I guess he was technically on loan:
13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside North America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his
Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs) only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim.
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
How about an update on Johan Sundstrom
Last year’s second round pick is also playing at the WJC for Sweden, and has 4 pts (1G, 3A) in 4 games so far, and is +4. The kid has decent size and talent, and should be pushing for an NHL job in a couple of years.

Johan
is playing solid in the WJC. Playing on the 1st line. Very good at bringing the puck into the zone and protecting it. Taking on a lot of responsibility on that line. Maybe could ask for little more offense but surely one of the best Swedish forwards this WJC.
Had a very good game (like most players on the team) against the Russians.
Sorry about that
For some reason this year I keep missing someone from the report every week.

Joensuu is almost never.
Mikko might next year, if a spot opens up.
