Tattoos? Really? Okay, so I know these fan posts are supposed to be insightful and probably have a minimum number of words...but this was just too rich to pass up. Does anyone have an issue w/ a tattoo parlor being set up for 10 games next year at the colisseum? Does anyone think it odd to have one sponsoring the NY Islanders? Seriously, how family entertainment appropriate is this? Sorry for the rant - I just find this terribly odd.

Well,

tattoos have been becoming more and more popular over the years. I have a couple and most of my friends have at least 2, but I definitely agree on the family thing. It’s not very kid friendly “unless” they also sell temporary ones, which is likely a good possibility.

by OzzyFan on Sep 3, 2011 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

yeah if they also did henna and/or airbrush tattoos

then this isnt so crazy, but otherwise whos going to a hockey game to get a tattoo?

I'm guessing they are gonna do a lot of kid airbrushing and other temporary tattoos,

probably even a lot of temporary tattoos on adults too and see if they like them enough to make an appointment and get them at their shop(Lou’s I think it’s called?).

by OzzyFan on Sep 4, 2011 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont know about that

They are a legit tattoo parlor, they can have ice girls slapping fake ones on kids if they wanted to.

I think they might sell body piercings and jewelery more often, and not do much tattooing other than maybe they might have someone up there for a session getting an area filled or something like that.

I think theyre going to be doing a lot more piercing then tattoos

Tattoos simply take too long, i mean unless you get there 2 hours before the game you simply wont have time. But piercings, thats actually a pretty good idea. relatively quick, a lot of people have them and it gets Tattoo Lou’s some good exposure (id say this helps them more than the islanders)

Sounds like they'll do piercings, too

Always wondered why no one made a stink about Amway ads during the playoffs

They were all over Versus, and I thought, “Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad sign?”

Thank you...

See my witty remarks below. Apparently I don’t follow blog board etiquette very well…but thanks for the tip – I’ll keep it in mind for my next rant.

One other thing

Seriously, how family entertainment appropriate is this?

I will put aside that I dont think tattoos are particularly inappropriate as a family topic… but I will say this: Why the hell does everything the Isles do HAVE to be family friendly, anyway?

Um...

Because by and large the fanbase they are attempting to cater to are families. If I show up and buy a ticket…that’s one seat filled. If I bring myself, my wife, my sister and her three daughters, etc…that’s a lot broader spectrum.

I have a tattoo, however, as someone who appreciates body art even I appreciate that most of mainstream fanbase may not especially appreciate it, and many may even disapprove…hardly something you want from a large portion of your fan (customer) base.

Second that with the notion of selling naming rights to a tattoo parlor – what’s next Chico’s Bail Bonds: Official bail bondspeople of the NYI?

OK. But how on earth would the Islanders acknowledging tattooing as an art form change that in any fathomable way???

I do not believe that “most of the mainstream fanbase” would have a problem with this.
This is NY.
Most of the mainstream fanbase will simply not give a shit.

I know youre joking, but body art is not in the same realm as money lended to people who are accused of crimes. The association simply doesnt work.

And- Chico? They should open THAT place in Newark.

What's funny is

when they didn’t cater to families they sold out on a consistent basis. But that’s a story for a “How Bettman Ruined the NHL” thread.

Just makes it easier- you will not have to come up with text youre not interested in typing to meet the minimum, AND you would see if someone already covered the same topic as you.

Even in a fan post this is a nonissue. Beer isn’t necessarily family friendly (alcholism destroys families for example) yet the isles have one pub and many places to buy beer at the game. What is so unfriendly about a tattoo parlor?

Well nothing wrong with talking about it in a fan shot IMO… I just dont understand why it would be a problem in any way.

My point is that this isn’t an important issue that hurts the isles. It’s one of those “oh that’s interesting” type of issues.

Puck Daddy

Coming to our defense yet again
Its starting to feel weird, with everyone not constantly ripping on us as usual

Actually...

the fact that puck daddy did write that piece makes my point relevent imo, and means that enough folks actually ‘do give a shit’ that someone thought it required a counterpoint. Regardless of how I personally feel about tattoos, there is a large segment of the population that does not feel the same way…and having this type of exposure might be enough to sway some in that segment away from going to a game…which, ultimately, goes against the goal of community outreach.

This team has enough issues without having to defend itself against something like this.

I will give Snow/Wang this much, however…they are not adverse to stepping outside the box w/ their marketing. Just wonder when we’ll see the same approach to club management. Lol!

Good conversation folks…enjoyed the point/counterpoint. Cheers.

by pennst92 on Sep 4, 2011 1:36 PM EDT reply actions

I surprised by that puck daddy. They even acknowledged the fact that the isles are ridiculed for things that if done by another team would be lauded.

While this tattoo parlor partnership might discourage some fans it also might encourage new fans. I think the passion behind islanders fandom is stronger than a tattoo parlor and most families will shrug off the tattoo parlor in support of the team.

All isles fans criticize the team for not marketing the team and then we criticize every single attempt the isles make at creatively marketing the team. Can’t we be happy the team is trying new things? And I’m sure other teams will follow suit and not a bad word will be spoken.

Hunter said he was just finishing his check.

I agree

Two Points for the Puck Daddy piece that stood out to me:

Here’s what the Islanders discovered this summer: Not enough people in town like them right now.

That even when an election is held on a Monday in August, there isn’t enough community support for the franchise to get it funding for a new arena.

So short of a dramatic reversal of on-ice fortunes — and that’s a work in progress — the Islanders have to do what they can to (a) fill the seats and (b) endear themselves to the community. While the deal with the cupcake shop was nice and all, this relationship with a local business seems like a more natural fit. And the more the Islanders build these bonds with the community, the better it’ll be for the franchise.

But this tattoo thing? Harmless and inconsequential. Yet someone in these very comments will use it as evidence that the Islanders are a “joke” franchise. If the Penguins or Flyers or Bruins did this, it’d be an indication of how hardcore their fans are. Ah, the subtleties of fan mockery.

The team has tried different ways in recent years to raise their profile. Some worked and some didn’t. The Blog Box was positive news for five minutes, while Sparky remains basically a necessary evil. The most reliable way to get positive press is also the hardest to do: build a winning team. Until that happens, expect them to do whatever it takes to get the word out that people can have fun at the Coliseum and should come out.

In NY, with a million other things to do on a Saturday night, the Islanders need to scratch and claw to put an ass in every seat. If this brings in a few more people, great. If not, it fades away.

Coliseum Concourseville

I don’t know the reason
I stayed here all season
Nothin to show but this brand new tattoo
But I’m a real dodo
It’s an NHL logo
How it got here I haven’t a clue

Wastin away again in Nassau-Coliseum
Searching for my lost bacitracin
Some people claim that there’s a owner to blame
Now I think, hell, it could be my fault

Tattoo Lou's was a huge hit at the Draft Party

It was hit with everyone….Parents, Kids, Boyfriends, Girlfriends, etc.. I’m not bothered by this at all. Just a business partnership that had very good early returns for both parties.

Appeals to younger Isles Fans too.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
