Bits: Let the Islanders Preseason Games Begin

So many other teams have gotten in on the fun, it's time for the New York Islanders to get their preseason kicks, too.

It starts tonight with a lighter squad in Boston, before tomorrow night's lone true "home" preseason game at Nassau Coliseum.

Coach Jack Capuano is sending the right "anyone can make the team" message to the youngsters, but the intrigue (standard preseason caveats apply) in tonight's lineup probably lies in whether P.A. Parenteau can elevate the Josh Bailey-Blake Comeau combo, and whether Rick DiPietro shows revived form (or whether North American rookie Anders Nilsson trumps him the way he trumped Mikko Koskinen in the rookie games).

Star-divide

Islanders Links

For the record, here are the expected -- but not official -- combos and lineup as listed by the official site:

Forwards
Comeau-Bailey-Parenteau
Pandolfo-Frischmon-Colliton
DiBenedetto-Ullstrom-Haley
McNeely-Marcinko-Gillies

Defensemen
Staios-Mottau
Wishart-Reese
Donovan-de Haan

Goalies
DiPietro
Nilsson

The official site also speculates on possible Bruins lines tonight in what is a home game for them.

This is the mindset of Rick DiPietro in September 2011:

"As bad as it was being injured, it really gives you an opportunity to sit back and realize how lucky you are," DiPietro said. "Every time I get a chance to play an exhibition or any kind of NHL game, is a huge thrill."

Needless to say, it's a massive year for DiPietro. Expect tonight's game to be streamed live so you can see how it begins (assuming DiPietro gets some playing time).

Meanwhile, in other injury reports Marty Reasoner and Andrew MacDonald were back on the ice (though not at full speed) yesterday, and Kirill Kabanov's wrist issue isn't listed as serious.

Tonight, the fun resumes.

Other Hockey Links

If you can't watch hockey tonight, there's always tomorrow night. That must mean hockey season is near.

Let's hope DP looks fit tonight.

But let’s hope just as much that they base their goalie choices for the regular season based on how they perform and nothing else.

And the 10-game suspension seems reasonable.

But let’s hope that Shanahan continues to take as much of a reasonable and consistent approach as he’s promised. Only time will tell.

by Paumanok on Sep 23, 2011 6:39 AM EDT reply actions

I really wish they'd stop calling it 10

because it’s the preseason. The only thing that makes it 10 is the paychecks now cover preseason games, but the team itself is not impacted by a vet missing preseason games. Some of the TSN crew were noting that a lot of vets hate playing in these games anyway…I would think, in particular, 4th line enforcers who are definitely going to be challenged on a nightly basis by kids lookning to make a name for themselves.

It is a great start by Shanahan though…let’s hope that it keeps up and that he proves consistent with the next batch of suspendbles.

True enough.

On the other hand, referring to it as a ten-game suspension will only raise expectations for similar suspensions in the future.

by Paumanok on Sep 23, 2011 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Let's hope that's true

I guess we’ll see. If Shelley is suspended again, and it is 12 games, I guess that bears out…If it’s 7, it’s a bit disingenuous. But you may be right!

That really depends more on what the particular suspension is for

They arent just going to go up in size regardless of what took place.

True

Shan said it has a lot to do with previous suspensions for Shelley, but perhaps he still gets 3 regular season games with no history. This hit was pretty bad— could have been more games IMO. Still, a good start.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Sep 23, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

It sounds like they’re going to be critically thinking about the suspensions rather than just handing out random numbers. They will consider more factors, like history, context, and intent of the incident. If something that would garner a one game suspension normally is done by a guy with a history of suspensions and who has had a longer one earlier in the season, they’re probably not going to arbitrarily hand out a very lengthy suspension, but make one a little longer than would normally be considered for the offense, so maybe two days instead of one for this offense.

Next thing you know, Bettman will come out and say “Six franchises make the bulk of the revenue in this league, and they’re only willing to share so much. So that’s why we want to lower salaries again.”

You don't think?

I think if Shelley comes back and elbows someone in the head, hell yes the suspension should go up. I think what we’re looking at here is Shanahan already has outlined what will be suspendable and not suspendable…not “kind of suspendable so we’l give him a couple this time, several next time” etc.

They’re still garbage plays and either, suspendable or not suspendable…I don’t think having a guy think “hey, last time I boarded a guy…this time, I’ll charge him or elbow him so I don’t get 10 games” is a good idea.

That may be true for affirmed players,

but those fighting for a spot need preseason games. A 5 preseason game suspension would be catastrophic for a player like Matt Martin.

by Francesca on Sep 23, 2011 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

It's 10 games

It’s like that silly argument that Wysh has that “1 playoff game = 2 games”

I could see the problem if he was suspended 6 games and was getting a 1 game suspension, but it looks like Shanny wanted to give him a 5 game suspension for the regular season, and had to cover the preseason too.

I think the good side is that Campbell would “rev up” the suspensions as the season got on. Remember the Nino slashing only got Calamerri 1 game, and Briere’s crosscheck on Nielsen only got Briere 2 games. Usually at the start of the season suspensions were light. I like that we’re starting at 5 games for a repeat offender.

If they are going to be consistent...

they need to develop a scale.
1 playoff game = 2 reg season = 4 pre-season games
So he basically got 6 games. So when he does it again they can start at 8 and work their way up from there.

Unlike Campbell… no previous suspensions, 10 games. The player comes back, next suspension 9 games.
Team gets $100K fine because a player was talking trash before a game.
Other team has automatic $10K fine rescinded because coach possibly said, “wait, stop” to goon who jumped off the bench to cerate a 2-on-1 pummelling of somebody he outweighed by 20 lbs while officials were tied up with the guy who got the ten game suspension in the first paragraph.

So… I really liked what Shanny did. But I am going to reserve judgement to see if the Islander related suspensions are consistent with the rest of the league.

It was pretty well known...

if you had followed either of them. In Washington Simon was referred to as “Chief”. That was a Craig Laughlin thing. I never heard it when he was a ranger or with any other team.
I think I found out about Nolan when his name surfaced the first time as a candidate for the Islanders’ job. I didn’t really follow him during his time in Buffalo, but there were stories about racism a few years into his NHL exile. If I remember correctly one of the bigger stories concerning Nolan was while he was at Moncton. They were in an away arena and the fans started doing the tomahawk chop and yelling first nation related slurs to Nolan. I think he filed a grievance with the Q.

hmmm, not really

their both Anishnabe…or Ojibway for non-Aboriginals…the further north you go, the less inter-marriage years between whites and Aboriginals in Canada, in other words, on average southern Canadian Aboriginals have had much more years living amongst whites and therefor far more intermarriages….generally, if you have “status” your considered First Nations, but if not your Metis…kinda like me…

John Chabot and Gino Ojick are both Algonkian, from the actual same reserve near Maniwaki Quebec….one of my close buddies from my university days is from that same reserve, knows them both well…this friends mother even babysat Gino…another one of my former classmates is in a commonlaw relationship with John Chabot’s sister.

When McCabe and the boys were kids, I caught an Islanders-Sabres pre-season game in Peterborough Ontario, where I wrote my M.A. and B.A. Nolan always had an Aboriginal following to his games…by coincidence, Buffalo came out with their “white buffalo” jerseys, which kinda played into an Aboriginal post-colonial prophesy…Nolan was a real role model for Aboriginal ppl, and i will always be greatful to Wang for giving him a chance to coach again in the NHL…now if we can just get Chabot back in the league.

cool

Okibway and Algonkian are very similar languages, so they are obviously related over the centuries…those who speak the languages can actually understand each other…in Canada there are only three Aboriginal languages not in danger of extinction, Inuktitut (Inuit, also called Eskimos), Cree, which is also related to Ojibway, and Ojibway…Ojibway Nation is the “Circle of Three Fires” which includes Ojibway, Potawami and Odawa…b/c of their rotating on their lands lifestyle (there was never any such thing as ‘nomadic’ Aboriginals, they rotated within their lands depending on the season) Europeans found it difficult to live among them, compared to the Iroquians who were farmers and lived in villages…as a result, there are literally over 125 names in historical documents for the Ojibway, this even includes Chipewa…and then it gets really confusing, as there are the Algonquin Nation and the Algonkian language groups that include Cree, Ojib etc., and there is the Iroquois 6 Nations, formely five, plus the Iroquian language group, which includes Huron, in the USA also called Wyondat, and the Cherokee are also Iroquian language group, but the last two are not Iroquois…

BananaGate

Not to play devil’s advocate nor to excuse someone throwing fruits, but my mind doesn’t run to rasicm automatically.

Do they sell bananas at the place? So the guy brought bananas from home in the event that 1) the one black person on the ice ties up a game with a minute to go? and 2) they choose him for the shootout? Seems like a stretch, even if they sold bananas there, so he bought/brought some bananas on the extreme off-chance Simmonds scores a game tying goal? Maybe there was a second banana-man on the grassy knoll.

If the banana(s) were thrown at any randon point of the game at the player, I’d see there being more of a case. Even if the guy waits until the near end of game since he figures he would be thrown out if caught; but Simmonds happens to score a big goal[Banana-1, misses ice] and selected for shoot-out[Banana-2] and banana thrown becasue of the previous goal? Its too much of a coincidence for me.

Preseason team line-ups could change at any time, who really would have known if he were to even be in the lineup, for someone planning a banana incident. Maybe he was just a disgruntled Red Wings fan, had and chucked what he had, a tasty banana. Maybe this whole thing was as simple as someone throwing a tomato at an opera singer? End of the game, ate his fill of bananas and had a couple extra fruits, no extra brain cells, too much to drink, figured here goes.

So I hope it was not racism which hurts this game we all love.

Maybe London Ontario has a potassium defiency epidemic

The ministry of health partnered with the Red Wings to spearhead an effort to educate Londoners about the need for a potassium rich diet. All fans in attendance where provided a banana as well as a pamphlet entitled “aren’t you glad I said Banana: the benefits of potassium”

by MatthewM11 on Sep 23, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

All good theories

Potassium is a nutrient necessary for human life and health. Remember fans, please deposit your banana peels at the nearest trash receptacle, we cannot strees this enough. Do not place the peel on the concourse floor, no matter how humorous the effect.

by Isles2011 on Sep 23, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I used to think like that

To think that wait … how does a banana mean … what now? But apparently this is a thing. It’s happened several times at soccer games in Spain and Italy, to taunt African players. Teams have been fined, even docked standings points for it.

It doesn’t surprise me that people are still racists, but this way of showing it just boggles my mind. It’s like screaming, “I’M MAKING A SYMBOLIC CARICATURE OF MY IGNORANCE RIGHT NOW, FOR ALL TO SEE.”

Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.

by Dominik on Sep 23, 2011 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I suppose

Based on previous events elsewhere, it sure is possible this is what happened here, but I don’t automatically run to racism by default. The burden of proof is on me to say this Banana-thrower is racist, and given the situation that it happened in, I can’t say for certainty that it is beyond a reasonable doubt. Either way, I’d just hate for a passing fan to see national coverage of this and think this is what its about at the NHL. Hopefully this will blow over and we can start reading about the game. Can this season just start already?

A little naive

You don’t see anything ethnic being thrown toward any other player on the ice ever…nothing at the Francophones, Swedes, Swiss, Russians, Indians…just the black guy…and it happens to be a banana?

my questions would centre around intent

did said fan bring banana into arena with the intent of throwing it at the black player? or was it spontenous? difference between premeditation — also, did said fan throw it at that player b/c he’s black, or b/c he was a Flyer and was within range? not defending a stupid act, but giving benefit of the doubt until there is more discloser/evidence

if it all turns out that the idiot fan had intent

the fan should have the book thrown at him…

but do the same thing to idiots who like to heat up copper pennies with lighters and throw them on the ice…that still happens every now and than and is very dangerous for players

he smuggled FRUIT into a game…fruit. You are not allowed to walk in with it, so he had to hide it. The only two times it happened were when Simmonds was involved in the play. I mean, maybe you’re a better person than me holing out hope for people, but that is one hell of a coincidence.

Between the Wachovia (or whatever it’s called now where the Flyers play) and Gloriously Unsponsored is like night and day. At the Flyers game they stopped once each period to clean the ice. At the Islanders game they came out 4 times a period to clean the ice. I hope this helps improve the ice conditions.

Amazing!

At first I thought you were bamboozling me, until I indeed looked at the color of the area rug. Once I did, I knew the information you provided was genuine and accurate. Wow, Comeau really let himself get out of shape over the offseason. I see an altercation is about to break out between 2 of the Ice Girls, they neglected to phone each other before the game and ended up wearing the same color undergarments. You can even see the old teal color of the wall to wall carpet, a holdover from the old fisherman days. Yes, this locker room has been upgraded nicely, but I can still see the out of date central air vent that should be replaced one of these days. I hope DP doesn’t tweak an injury when he skates down the bannister in his reverse playoff beard. The piano is nice and Bruno played a wicked Für Elise, but many fans long for organ music. Be that as it may, each player must master some simple songs on the ivory keys before taking the ice. “No chopsticks, no hockey sticks”, coach says.

Hi everyone.

I just moved from Long Island to Queens and I currently have Time Warner Cable. I was looking to record the Isles preseason game tonight but MSG and MSG+ both have the Rangers-Devils game. I know Cablevision used to put Islanders games on their guide channel but I did not see something similar on the guide that we have. For those of you that have Time Warner Cable in the NYC, is there a channel that would show the game that I am overlooking? Or, do I really need to find another way to watch this game (and possible future Islanders games)?

I’ve never posted here before but I read the content here everyday and its awesome. I noticed your discussion here about IPB and wanted to add to it. Im not a huge fan of Botta or IPB but I sometimes visit it just to see if there is any interesting Isles news posted. Anyway, to the point of my post, last night I pulled up IPB to check it out and one of the commenters on the site started posting info on there about a 33 year old Brad Kurtzberg who was sentenced to 22 months in prison back in 2002 for distributing child pornography over the internet and setting up a meeting with a 15 year old girl, who turned out to be an FBI agent, at a mall in NJ. The guy apparently lives in Merrick. Shortly after that info was posted all of the comments were deleted. Then today all of Brad’s post were gone.

LAWYER GETS 22 MONTHS
Bradley Kurtzberg, 33, a divorce attorney from Melville, was arrested at a mall in Paramus, New Jersey where he had allegedly arranged to meet 15 year old “April” for a sexual encounter. April was not a 15 year old, she was a member of an FBI task force whose duties include trolling cyberspace for sexual predators. He told April that he would be gentle and would bring protection for her first time. He pleaded guilty last year to one count of transporting child pornography and has been sentenced to 22 months in a federal prison. US District Judge Garrett E. Brown Jr also imposed a sentence of 3 years’ supervised release, and a $3,000 fine. He has been free on $100,000 unsecured bond and will surrender within 60 days of the sentencing date.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
