SI.com has this article on the life of enforcers: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/hockey/nhl/09/19/brent.severyn.enforcer.life/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=hp_bn10
I think it might explain Gillies' demeanor somewhat. i never really looked at their job from their own perspective.
Haley on the other hand looks like a regular, intense nhler until the gloves drop.
Gillies, bubble guy that he is, appears to be a madman off his medication for the duration of the game. When every game might be your last, doing the unenviable dirty work that inevitably removes you from the ice that you crave (at times minutes, at times 9 games), the pressures must be enormous.
Until now,i believed that crazy, wild men were specifically recruited for these roles. Severyn was an ahl all-star. To make it in the bigs he had to do a job that is painful on multiple levels.
