Some interesting line combos there

Cant wait to see the preseason line setups on sept. 23rd, next week, bam, hockey is back.

Thoughts on the Roster

I had no idea Jurcina was that big; Wishart must look like a rake next to him.

Is 206 a substantial increase for JT over last year?

I knew our roster was young, but untill you see the ages of some of the core, you really don’t appreciate it.

Interesting thoughts here.

Most of this is meaningless, but FN-GO Staying together probably means that line is almost certain, barring injury, to start together for the season.

MM-JT-Nino is again interesting and could also be a starting line.

Meanwhile, interstingly on Defense we get AMac without a pair. Is his injury healing alright?

but Martin being placed with Kabanov and Strome makes me wonder if his spot on the NHL roster is in doubt.

With Reasoner, Rolston and now possibly Pandolfo

I would much rather see those guys- veterans who are proven defensive forwards, rather than Martin. Hopefully Martin starts in BP where he can work on being a responsible checking forward.

by MatthewM11 on Sep 17, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Martin with Special Kids

Martin is being given a chance to get his offensive game in order. The kids can create space for Martin to be a sniper. Martin has to do more than be a goon. Well here is his chance to prove it.

Also, if they guys make it to a preseason game then he is their protector in chief.

by TheMagus on Sep 17, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He also had to work on his defensive game

Considering his future is likely as a bottom six winger.

Martin doubt

Was thinking the same thing (with usual “Day 1” caveats). Could also be just setting him up as their protector during preseason games.

I like

the Bailey line. Kind of situation he could succeed in. PAP might be a placeholder, because Nino doesn’t break camp on the first line, but KO could always make his way to the first, with BC slotting on the second. Or maybe COZO takes his talents to the top line! Who knows? All I know is the 2011 Islanders or on the ice!!!!!

by afrosupreme on Sep 17, 2011 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

Why do so many want to break up the second line?

It works so well. I say leave the second and first line intact this season.

Especially with him. Its uncanny how realistic that part of the game is. You have to wonder if the people who make the ratings know he’s good at that, or thy just got lucky.

Agreed

So many fans can’t wait for the second Paranteau is jettisoned for someone younger and sexier, but we are still talking about a cost-controlled productive right handed shot who has proven he can be effective if given the linemates, ice-tine and PP time. Guy LeFluer he is not; but there are much worse stopgap top six wingers out there

by MatthewM11 on Sep 17, 2011 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Actually

the main reason I’d like to see PAP on the third line is to give Bailey a better linemate, and a chance to succeed. I think he was fine on the first line last year, and wouldn’t have a problem with him staying there. I also think they might get more from a different player on that line (possibly KO). But it’s less about that, and more about trying to give Bailey some help in an extremely important season for his career.

by afrosupreme on Sep 17, 2011 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be fine with that

And to clarify the Paranteau comment I made was in response soley to pippup’s comment about breaking up the top two lines, I wasn’t speaking to you but to other fans who have made comments recently calling a Paranteau a bum (I’m paraphrasing) and giving away his roster spots to unproven rookies. That being said I like the idea of him playing with Bailey for the reason you cited above

by MatthewM11 on Sep 17, 2011 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Parenteau thing is not non-appreciation

but just a thought that his stats are mainly due to being with JT and MM. He’s productive on that line, and easily a worthy addition to the roster (and cheap!). But it’s not a surprise they’d consider putting him on 3rd line.

Nino needs to be with the 1st or 2nd line. And since they did not break up the Grabner Nielsen Okposo line, puting him with JT and Moulson made sense.

Awesome!

We need Wallace! Always liked that movie. School me if I’m wrong, I think the film was fairly/decently accurate, right? I know one of those main battles was on a bridge and I don’t think Wallace ever met the princess. I had hopes Mel would direct a sequel centered around Robert the Bruce, he had some decent adventures before the movie’s end scene and he mingled with some Knight’s Templar; I think he got lepracy in the end.

FREEEEDOOOOOOM!

by Isles2011 on Sep 17, 2011 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Movie wasn't even close to accurate.

It really treated The Bruce badly. He wasn’t at Falkirk, where the movie portrayed him as having betrayed Wallace. More importanty, it wasn’t Robert’s father who betrayed Wallace ultimately to the British, it was someone else. There are a large number of real inaccuracies that were made to make the movie more romantic.

It looks like here are the Islanders Projected Lines and Pairings

Based on the logic of current lines, pairings, and groupings:
Forwards
Moulson-Tavares-Nino (this made my day)
Grabner-Nielsen-Okposo
Rolston-Bailey-Parenteau (this I am scratching my head)
Comeau-Reasoner-Martin (this I am scratching my head)

I do not understand breaking up Bailey and Comeau. Comeau was the one player that clicked with Bailey. Also I thought Rolston was was brought in to solidify our 4th line. Also how do you put a 24 goal scorer on 4th line. If this is not the Islanders why would Comeau be at least in the same group. This makes no sense to me. They need to switch Comeau and Rolston and I think it would be perfect.

Defensive Pairings
Streit-Mottau
MacDonald-Hamonic (it looks like they are keeping them paired)
Eaton-Jucina

Wishart looks like the odd man out for now.

only thing i can think of

is they are trying to improve defensive play…second line solid, first line is not that great defensively but will be used primarily for offense if not exclusively…split up Reasoner and Rolston on bottom six to spread out vets and defensive teaching…

just a guess

by CanadianIsleslifer on Sep 20, 2011 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems the "NHL" lines for both A & B are top two lines...3 & 4 lines farm and juniors

I too find the Bailey line interesting, but wonder who will do the scoring?

It sure looks positive for Nino RE: starting in the NHL

I am wondering if they are seriously considering giving Wallace a shot in the show this season?

FNGO stays intact (but should spend time playing with others in case of injury)

Martin, if not needed for his fists. is best served with AHL time where he will be a top 6 forward and get the ice time to try and become more than just a checker & fighter

The farm is going to have some good young talent banging on the NHL door

Strome and Kabby back to Junior for one more year? Not sure both, but suspect it

Eaton Jurcina, Streit and Mottau, no Steve Staois?

Donovan and DeHaan look like a top farm pairing, Olsen and Klementyev should be BP’s shut down D pairing….

I think if Staois makes it, he will play primarily with Amac, Eaton and Wishart as a second and third pairing D.

Reading all of that just got me pumped!

Moulson’s tweet, Grabs’ take, PA, the groupings and lines…looking good!

Damn good!

My gut tells me this team’s going to shock more than a few of it’s detractors and electrify the fans.

Got a good feeling about this year…

Like the idea of PA and Rolston working with Bailey; PA’s about as rock solid as it gets, and Rolston may just be the veteran influence Bailey needs to mentor him and help him take the big step.

Really like that set up.

Like seeing Nino on the One Line with Tavares and Moulson too.

Gotta good feeling all around about this…

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Sep 18, 2011 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Good read

This is where I stop with agents like Meehan. RFAs are already getting a ton more than they normally would considering their (lack of) leverage: With zero offer sheets forthcoming, all they have is the implicit threat that they will flee as UFAs four years from now if they aren’t overpaid now.

Agents like Meehan have a self-created mandate to push the salary level up and up and up, but at the end of the summer I suspect most young players would rather resume play than become public scapegoats over an extra million. (Maybe I’m wrong and Lombardi’s being unrealistic in his demands … but I kind of doubt it.)

Meanwhile, Steve Simmons is still Steve Simmons

Here is another gem of his:

I didn’t understand why John Tavares allowed the New York Islanders to draft him in the first place. Haven’t understood his first few seasons on the Island. Have less understanding of why he would sign on long-term this week. So, clearly, I don’t get the guy …

I hate that guy. But although it usually pisses me off when he does this, now that JT has signed long-term, it just makes him look pathetic.

His sorry-ass team can’t get a player like that, so he has spent over two years whining about how Toronto needs him and can’t just let it go. It stenches of jealousy and just makes him look bad. Also, when a “journalist” starts condoning Eric Lindros-Eli Manning type draft maneuvering, it’s just not right.

Tavares hasn’t said that much — and quite likely he won’t. But if I were in his position, as the logical No. 1 pick in June’s National Hockey League entry draft, I would pull a John Elway, an Eli Manning or an Eric Lindros.

beauty of Kessel trade for us is...

everyone and their grandmother knew who was being picked with both toronto 1st by boston, and 1000 hockey fans could have been asked and would have picked the same two…

Seguin was billed number two behind Hall for a long time, and toronto gave up second overall pick…

Hamilton and Couture both slipped, and when boston’s turn came to pick with toronto first for the second straight year, Hamilton fell to them, and there was a drop in talent after Hamilton…

had to that, the second rounder boston also got in the first draft year, turned out to be a pretty good prospect too — a kid named knight…looked good against isles prospects…

by CanadianIsleslifer on Sep 20, 2011 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

so we can say with all certainly that the leafs gave up seguin & hamilton plus a second rounder for kessel

that’s about what it boils down too…leafs can say, “well…we probably wouldn’t have drafted knight”

by CanadianIsleslifer on Sep 20, 2011 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm quite certain there's a lot of things Steve Simmons doesn't get...

That you’re supposed to wipe your Lemieux after you take a Karmanos, to eliminate itch and stink…

That pulling on his Milbury won’t get Tavares to suddenly want to leave a team that has drafted and built shrewdly for a team that traded away Tyler Seguin and Doug Hamilton for Phil Kessel…

That if he’d just stop banging his head against the wall, his headaches would go away…

That John Tavares doesn’t want to hang out with him if he just keeps leaving messages on his answering machine…

Last but not least?

Toronto is not, in fact, the center of the universe.

He sounds like a petulant child and I have to wonder what kind of credible “newspaper” would employ someone like that.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
