Boom, thought it would be this

Mentioned earlier in a JB thread it would either be one year one million or two year two million. Nostradamus in the house.

Now Bailey, earn your pay check and have a consistent 40 + point year and prove us all wrong on your talents.

Hmmm

How come we only hear about these quatrains of Nostradamus AFTER the event?

Hold up?

guessing Garth was offering longer contract then bailey wanted

by neologizer on Sep 16, 2011 12:25 AM EDT reply actions

My bet is the other way around, or at least something in between

Two years at this price means no give on the Islanders’ side. They probably held firm at that price.

So if Snow offered longer term, it was probably for this same (relatively) Nielsen/MacDonald discount price, whereas Bailey’s side would probably want a bigger premium to give up his arbitration years (which begin after this contract is up).

Bailey has to think he’ll be able to command more in arbitration; Snow has to think Bailey needs to show more on the ice before he can be rewarded for giving up arbitration.

Of course Meehan’s agency throws a wild card in everything. They represent so many players, and they seem to be trying to flex their muscles this summer.

Right, my limited understanding is this is basically similar money (actually a little bit more) then a qualifying offer for this year and then next year.

After that he’s eligible from arbitration right? and has to think his chances of significant salary increase are very good so what is holding out for? Okposo like deal? Bailey and his agent are smokin crack then.

On the other hand If Garth only offers a longer term discount contract with the stick of the Wang deadline….what do you do then.

I guess the last minute nature of the deal and Bailey quote about “not so confident about a deal anymore” was a little confusing

by neologizer on Sep 16, 2011 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

That's why I suspect the agency was trying to squeeze

Seemed to be a theme with all the 2008 RFAs this year. Maybe there’s something to them trying to wriggle big deals before the next CBA. And I figure this deal or something similar was on the table all summer long — for the same reasons you cite: Do well, then you score a “core” contract or in arbitration.

And yes, it’s more than his Q.O. (which would’ve been a minor raise to around $900k base) and yes it takes him up to his two arbitration-eligible RFA years (again, pending any changes in the next CBA).

I guess one thing we don’t know is what agents think might be the outcome of those 6th and 7th years of a career in the next CBA.

two points

1. Didn’t know Strange went to ESPN and she needs a new photo. Looks like a junior girl (still unsure of herself)
2. Why the need for two years?

by Mulligan on Sep 16, 2011 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

Excellent.

I know everyone around here seems to be down on Bailey but I think he’s a real talent and he’s going to break through this year. Then next year we can extend him for 4 or 5 yrs after he puts up 45 pts this year.

by TMS on Sep 16, 2011 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

Not everyone around here is down

But it sure is a point of contention!

My money would be on him becoming a well-rounded NHL hockey player, and I still think the Islanders need to collect and retain as many of those as possible.

I believe he will too

It’s a matter of “tenses”. Last year he “stunk”, this year he may stink, and in the future, he certainly will stink less. But when talking about a contract, you can only judge a player based on what they have done.

NY Islanders, just one irrational free agent signing away from contention!

Comeau put up 46 points last year

and got a 1 year deal, and I may be in the minority here, but I think BC has more talent than Bailey

BC is also like 4 years older

And has a lot more experience, when he was the age Bailey is now was he even in the NHL? I think bailey has loads more potential, i mean when he was good, we all saw how great hew was playing and what hes capable of. Comeau has always had good potential, but nothing extreme. The things Bailey was doing for the first several games of the season were incredible, BC has never impressed me like that

Haha youre entitled to your opinion

But you made me laugh with phrases like loads more potential and made my side hurt when you took it up a notch to extreme. Blake’s decision making is not the greatest but the guy goes end to end almost as good as anyone on the team and has a much better shot than Bailey. I have never once seen Bailey exhibit that type of offensive ability and I have seen 98% of the games in the Bailey era. Bailey has had a nice goal or two in his career but I’ve never seen him take over a shift. So extreme potential is way over the top. I realize Bailey is 4 years younger but I will eat my hat if Bailey EVER has a season better than 25 goals or 50 points, pretty much equivalent to what Comeau did last year. Actually I could probably see Bailey get a ‘Patrick Flatley, one time in his career’ max season solely as a result of the possible explosive offense the Isles are putting together, but definitely not because he has tons of potential.

"He has a much better shot than bailey"

Maybe because hes a goalscorer and Bailey’s a playmaker?……

Never seen him take over a shift

You mean like this?
And outside of last March and this past season, when the hell has Blake Comeau impressed ANYONE. for one, your comparing a “power forward” to a playmaker, and one whos also 4 years older than the other with more OHL, AHL, and NHL experience. Apples and oranges. Were probably seeing Blake’s peak right now, Bailey is years away from his. besides, as far as we know last season was a fluke for Blake, considering itsh is only 20 goal year since his last year of juniors

I am not and love this contract

this is a perfect contract for the team. I mean if he continues to develope and starts to score more it is a bargain. If he plays the good D like last season it is a fair contract, and if he falls off a little and the team feels he just isn’t fitting into whatthey need. It is a easily tradable contract

personally I hope to see him here at the end of this 2 years and then signed again.

Wonder if the Tavares deal broke the gridlock here.

Either:

1. “Take it or leave it. The train’s leaving the station, the boat’s leaving the dock and, oh, by the way, we will remember.”

or

2. JT signing the long term deal gave Bailey a sense that, this is a team that’s going places and the time to commit is now.

Gotta wonder though, if they’re giving Bailey 2 years and $2.1 mil, what does that mean for Frans, someone who actually accomplished something last season? (League leading 8 short handed goals, cemented himself as the team’s #2 center, monster on the PK, etc…)

Jeff Carter to Columbus? Wait, I've seen this one before, it was called Shanahan to Hartford. Advice? Don't buy a Carter jersey.

7, 8, whatever, point is, that was in the chaos of last year.

I’ve got him and Grabs pegged for the top of the league again this season and I think Grabs may make a run at the single season record (13).

Very gratifying news - with a more stable core around him and this vote of confidence as it were,

I think Josh IS going to really flourish; too much pressure and the moving around, between Bridgeport and various positions in Uniondale, just made it very difficult for him to establish any kind of consistent game and I think the expectations placed on him were decidedly unfair, even a little hypocritical when compared to Kyle’s very similar travails as noted…..also, as has been remarked upon as well, Bails has one of the highest point totals of anyone in the three seasons he’s been here (which his agent may have used as leverage in getting this contract, in my estimation a very fair one…..)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
