Why don't we just go after and sign Hannan already?

Signing Scott Hannan doesn't mean we can't try and trade for anyone. I think Jack Hillen is a road we aren't exploring, if Garth wanted to sign him, I think he would have brought him back already, and arguably Hannan is a better candidate for the top 4.

Hannan will bring defenisve security to our top 4, flexibility with our shutdown pair(we can move A-mac or Hamonic to play with Mark Streit if we want, and I'd suggest it). Before last year, Hannan has also been given lots of PK time (imagine strengthening that even more? lol) and really tough assignments. Doing that in Colorado, he's averaged 22min/gm for 3 straight years playing against tough competition in a shutdown role. He can play that role really well apparently. And he brings even more size to our blueline at a big 6'1'' 225lbs.

Sure he is 32, but I think we can rely on him for a year or 2 taking tough defensive roles (especially since his style isn't overly damaging. He does block a lot of shots, but he doesn't throw many hits). I think we should sign him for security/depth at minimum because he does solidfy our top 4 if Garth fails looking for that trade. What's the worst that happens? Mottau is waived?

Thoughts? It's not like this stops garth from making that move for a top 4.

my thinking exactly

like Torrey and Arbour said during the dynasty rebuild, you get your goals against down first, then the scoring chances will come…

nothing worth trading for that is available, so add veteran depth, stick with developing youth…Hannan fits the bill best out of those UFAs left.

by CanadianIsleslifer on Aug 9, 2011 12:14 AM EDT reply actions

another plus is

adding some extra veteran leadership to the D line would be huge since we dont know what we’re going to get from eaton and mattau. and if he plays extremely well but is deemed expendable, he can be flipped like wisniewski was. Cant go wrong signing this guy

I think Snow likes this defense, and is going forward with it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt like he got burnt last season signing the little bit older Eaton and Mottau and having them struggle with injuries. Plus I worry about anyone that is on the market for this long and isn’t signed. There’s an issue somewhere.

I seriously think that the best place to look for roster decisions lately

Is the “public appearnce” angle. Wishart has been about the community with signings and such. He is going to be playing unless he absolutely bombs. He’s too involved to just be filler.

Goes for Mottau as well.

My thought is that we are probably done unless somebody rocks our world with an offer. Our first three BPT call-ups should be pretty good, and they signed some emerging guys for down there last year who can be brought back to play there given NHL injuries. (Bidlevski for one)

NY Islanders, just one irrational free agent signing away from contention!

Our Defensive Pairings

Without signing Hannan what do you think our pairings would look like?

Streit – Hamonic
Amac – Jucina
Wishart – Eaton

Mottau – our backup?

Does that lineup scare you? Is Hannan better than Eaton? Who will man the PP?

If we add Hannan who goes?

Would we be better trying to trade for Bogosian (Jets), Coburn (Flyers), Green (Caps), or Leopold (Sabres)? All but Bogosian play for teams with salary cap issues.

Is Snow waiting to see what GM is willing to unload a player as the season gets closer and staying below the salary cap becomes an issue? My guess is Snow will upgrade our defense as he did last year with the Wiz.

by TheMagus on Aug 9, 2011 9:28 AM EDT reply actions

I like Streit and Hamonic for 1st PP unit

…so I like these pairings. Amac and Jurcina can be 2nd PP unit. Rolston can fill a PP point when needed.

But I do think they may try to keep together Hamonic and Amac at even strength, given how well they played together. Then my guess is Streit with Jurcina, but I could see Eaton, or even Wishart, paired with Amac. Hard to say.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Aug 9, 2011 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I could see Rolston in A Mac role

And then A Mac filling in when needed. A Macs still young so I could imagine they giving him less ice time when he isn’t going to be our anchor. Either way those PP pairings are solid.

Constantly building for the future.

by pgat28 on Aug 10, 2011 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I could see Rolston on the Point

with Streit on the first unit. Followed by JT with either some combo of MM, PA or KO.

2nd unit would be Frans or JB, with either PA, KO, Grabner, Comeau, and Amac and Travis on the point.

by ghalbart on Aug 10, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope

I would hope Snow tries to grab Bogosian, Coburn or some other big hitting defenseman before the season begins. I think Rolston will help on the PP but we need someone to help clear the net.

I like the idea of trading for Bogosian

But I dont’ think he’s going to solve our top 4 problems just yet. I still think it’s worth getting him though…if possible.

by Empire39 on Aug 10, 2011 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess

Hannan probably has a number of similar one year offers out there from a variety of teams. He’s probably hoping someone (like the Isles) comes along with a multi-year offer. And like WebBard said, Garth probably is loath to throw 2+ years at an older defenseman after Eaton/Mottau.

The other thing is, sure, he’s probably an upgrade over Eaton/Mottau, but not much of one. If Garth is going to go after someone I’d imagine it would be someone who is a significant upgrade. Otherwise we’ll see what we have with the kids as the season progresses.

by afrosupreme on Aug 9, 2011 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

My sentiments exactly

He’s probably holding out for a longer-term deal. 32 isn’t old, but it could be by a defenseman’s standards. If we sign him to a multi-year deal, we could have another Witt situation on our hands if his body completely shuts down.

Official choice of Lighthouse Dog #1.

by Fabtraption on Aug 9, 2011 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Hannan has never impressed me. I’d frankly rather have claimed White’s one year left than offer the two years Hannan is likely seeking.

In the area of marginal upgrades, with Hannan I’d rather take my chances on what’s already here.

I think Eaton still has a lot to offer

Not necessarily top pairing minutes, but he’s a level headed vet that can bring stability to the defense and fill in almost anywhere if needed. I’m not saying he’s a first pair guy, but in a pinch (injury) he could be serviceable in many roles. His experience and CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE can be helpful when developing any of our young players, not just defenseman. I’m hoping he’s healthy this year and can help fill out our defense.

Yandle

I said this in the other post, but I think Yandle is someone to try to trade for (obviously a matter of whether the Yotes are willing to part with him).

But the dude is young, has a 5 year contract unlike Weber or Doughty who could walk if by some miracle we got them, and is a pretty solid overall D-man. I don’t want Green simply because I honestly dont think his scoring ability makes up for his problems defensively. I mean we didnt have any problem scoring goals we had problems stopping them and DeHaan could add more offense once he is up. Im cool with someone like Cobourn and as for Bogosian he is similar to Bailey (in the sense of we are still unsure of how he will turn out (thus too much risk)

by litlchuck55 on Aug 9, 2011 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

I like Yandle

That’d be sweet. But I just can’t picture PHX parting with him unless they got a new owner who was an absolute cheapskate. Doubt the NHL would be fond of Maloney trading him, doing a sort of Palffy-lite situation.

Hannan

methinks if we wanted him, we already would have signed him

his availability could suggest unspoken of injury issues

we are presently something like

MacDonald – Hamonic
Streit – Jurcina
Eaton – Wishart
Mottau

(Katic – Reese)
((de Haan – Donovan))

decidedly lacking a big bruiser

by Cary K on Aug 9, 2011 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

I'd look for Hamonic

To have some big hits this year. Laid some big hits last year and I think he’s just gunna keep it up. And I’d think Streit is a first line D-Man by all accounts.

Constantly building for the future.

by pgat28 on Aug 10, 2011 7:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Not Good

Hamonic is the only hitter in our group of defenseman. That would be asking too much of him. We need one more all around defenseman to be successful.

by TheMagus on Aug 10, 2011 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Or Cappy could tell Jurcina/Wishart

… To be more physical or they are not going to play. When you have some size and can skate well enough, you can play physically. I am not saying they have to go out of their ways to make big hits, but they have to protect the crease and work the boards a little more. The 2nd/3rd/4th lines will have guys who can help out defensively, so Jucina/Wishart should be able to play more aggressively.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Aug 10, 2011 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the idea................

but the big problem is getting rid of Mottau who has a contract and is recovering from injury.

by altosax on Aug 10, 2011 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think Mottau's really a problem

I don’t think he’s very good, but as a depth defenseman I’m fine with having him for another year. If he can’t play due to last year’s injuries, then we will need to fill his spot, but I don’t think he’s holding us back from doing anything (trade/signing) and I don’t think he’s blocking a prospects path to the NHL. When the likes of DeHaan, Donovan, Katic, etc are ready, they will leap frog Mottau on the depth charts for sure.

Hannan has lived out West most of his career. Maybe he wants to go back.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
