Hockey Bits: On the Islanders, Kings uni's, study of defensemen 'off' hands

Meh, who needs color anyway?

UPDATE, BREAKING NEWS: Recently retired NHL enforcer Wade Belak was found dead in a hotel room today. He'd recently been transitioning from an NHL career to hosting his own radio show. Terrible news.

Some random topics for the final day of August 2011 (good riddance). From the Kings going to Renaissance Fair threads full-time to an elaborate study of defensemen's use of the "off" hand. Get your hockey on here and after the jump.

With the NBA lockout looming

The NHL will look to capitalize on a potential sports monopoly from Jan to April. I hope the Isles have recognized the significance of this. Coupled with good marketing, If we can outplay the rag$ and Devils down the stretch, our fanbase should grow.

by backstop87 on Aug 31, 2011 11:50 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

This is an excellent point

The league in general should listen to this advise but the Isles surely would benefit greatly from this.
Another bad season for the Isles could ultimately lead top the demise of the franchise on LI. A finish ahead of bothe rags and Devils, coupled with a Playoff birth could do wonders for the Isles business is many ways

A Shame about the Kings

NHL teams with black as one their uniform colors: 11
NHL teams with purple as one of their colors: 0 (burgundy doesn’t count)

I know!

I can’t believe how long it took for someone to embrace green after the Whale left. I’ve never forgiven Norman Green for betraying his surname in the chase for making the North Stars none more black.

Colors are good. Black is even good — it’s just already been done.

In the case of the Ducks, I'd have to say Black is better than Eggplant.

The kings had a really great royal purple. The Ducks eggplant and some greenish hue. Their unis came out in the teal, eggplant and mustard era that was just plain wrong. I am in the minority, but I actually like the Ducks third uniform with the duck-print D, but mostly because I think the D looks idiotic when paired with the rest of the -ucks.

Kind of agree on the Ducks' 3rd

There’s still something not quite right about it — I think due to fitting the RBK stylings — but I think it works by having 1) an actual logo and 2) some splashes of color. Orange mixed with their … other colors is a look they can own with the right balance.

Oil is black, then black is Texas after all.

I liked the original Dallas Star green jerseys, but the black with the numbers in the center of the chest was just not really much of a design.

I liked the Stars whenever they actually used green

It was infuriating that he switched to Black and the “ST^RS” look even before he moved the team.

They certainly had a few regrettable looks

They actually introduced black accents long before they went pajama black. But some form of embracing the green was always better in my eyes — especially since I didn’t have to actually follow the team.

Rumor is Doughty's holding out because he doesn't like the black jerseys.

He wants a clause in his contract that says he doesn’t have to wear them or he ain’t signing. Or at least that’s what Eklund thinks ;-).

It's funny

I liked Quisp’s point about how whenever they do redesigns they always say they had “player input.” I share his skepticism about how much substance there is in that input.

And I know fans’ tastes vary, but the fans are with a team long before and after a player comes and goes. The whole enterprise is built off of a bunch of fans continuing to behave irrationally for their own “psychic benefit” in support of the team.

Missing from poll totals are last year's goal totals

It looks like almost everyone that played consistently last year, except for JT, is looking at downward goal production. Okposo and Neidereiter are the only players making big jumps, but mostly due to increased number of games played.

22 goals are no longer on the roster (scored by 6 players) with RSH the biggest loss at 10 goals. Rolston and Reasoner alone scored a combined 28 goals last season. So it doesn’t look completely unreasonable if you assume last season is a sound benchmark for production.

Yeah, I don't think it's unreasonable

Any one of the pr*j*ct*ns looked fine to me — I think this just reflects that weird things usually happen. Someone will miss major time with an injury, or someone will have lady luck frown upon him, etc. And then Nino will score 20 goals!!!1

Yea

Not very lofty projections at all. And I sort of think any one player might score more than 20 with MM and JT if they go for 60+ again.

Obviously the jump is coming from the guys who missed time, but especially from the bottom 6. Hopefully Reasoner and Rolston really do have that effect.

by afrosupreme on Aug 31, 2011 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, and (bottom 6) I don't think that's unreasonable at all

Goes back to why I like the Reasoner and Rolston additions … and then goes back to our “defense and goaltending as wild cards” refrain.

No Sleep 'til....

by Anarcurt on Aug 31, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

To throw a wrench in this...

Last year’s totals… 229-264 (-35)
My pr*d*ct**n(just in case)… 240-215 (25)
My reasoning….Marty Reasoner + Mark Streit – Zenon Konopka – Joensuu + Montoya + Poulin – (where do you begin)
Tavares line will benefit from another year of Tavares maturity. I’m looking for 35 from JT and 75+ from the line.
FNGO will benefit from a full season of Kyle Okposo. That has 65+ goals written all over it.
The Comeuver line of BC, Bailey and Rolston will benefit from a consistent RW to compliment the two younger forwards. Comeau will probably lead the line with 20+ goals again, but Bailey will chip in something close to 20 and Rolston should get to double digits… a small percentage of replacement time with (Martin-Haley-Ullstrom or Rakhshani) will probably get the line up over 50 goals.
That’s over 180 goals from the top three lines. The real bonus will be a fourth line (or 3B) of Martin-Reasoner-Nino. Unlike fourth lines of the past, this line will create offensive pressure. They may not finish with the frequency of the other three lines, but they will spend a lot less time in their own zone. All four lines will do that. I’d also give them 20-25 goals.
That should be 200-210 goals from the forwards. I think this group of defenders will put up between 30-40 goals. Streit will probably lead the charge with ~15, and AMAC and Hamonic chipping in 7 or 8 each. Add a few stragglers from Wish, Eaton and Juce, plus some pachinko specials from various fill-ins… and there are easily 11 more goals for the good guys.
You also have to factor in that they were scoring at a much higher pace after the turnaround… and once the defense was simplified, and goaltending somewhat solidified the GAA went down significantly.
This is how we should measure success this year. For Arbour it was a +100 goal differential in his second year. For Capuano a +60 goal diff should be an attainable goal for the year.

lol, I still can't believe that they gave him that much. A lot of money and term based on projected talent and not playing history.

Could be a problem. I know that a number of people are complaining about salary cap room for next year now. I think they have 12mil or something to sign 6 players next year(2 d-men, 4 forwards), and 2 of those players include Coburn and Carle as free agents. I think they may be in for a bit of a nose dive over the next couple years.

Eh, it's hard to say.

Both are UFA after this year, likely neither will resign with us unless they love it here and/or we make the playoffs. And I could see Wishart becoming better then Coburn(in everything but hitting), and Carle is very similar to what we hope DeHaan and Donovan can become. I still want Coburn though, even if it is a 1 year rental. I’d give them a 2nd rounder and a bottom 6 prospect for him.

Off hand

Interesting article. I’ve generally thought that was overrated. I wonder how applicable the findings are at the NHL level where everything happens at a significantly faster pace and advanced level, but it seems reasonable that practice can offset any deficiency there.

by afrosupreme on Aug 31, 2011 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

Read the offhand article with great curiosity too.

The idea that you can trap the puck with your body along the boards makes perfect sense, until you have to actually play the puck on your backhand or be prone agains the boards. I just find it easier to retrieve the puck coming of the boards than pressing my body against the boards on the point since I am less mobile if I have my body blocking the puck insteadof my stick. Now that may just be out of habit, but I always played the off hand point until I became to slow to make up defensively in my own zone. I’d much rather cheat with my body to the inside and use my stick to the outside. I can alwasy use my strong hand to hold off an attacker up the middle.

After thinking about this way too often

And reading about it there, I think it’s a real issue for some defensemen, but not an issue at all for others whose games have developed around it.

I really think some players are just great players and have a toolbox deep enough to handle either side. And some players have gotten quite adequate or even good based on a toolbox tailored to their “side,” but all of that falls apart when pushed into the off hand. (For some wingers, too.)

This is why I think the handedness of the blueline matters, BUT only matters when we know the abilities of each guy. It’s not the biggest deal, but it can be a factor depending on your personnel.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
