Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Editor's Update: So this is weird. I thought that wire language looked familiar. Sim was *not* signed; some issue with BPT email blast sent out a release from last summer.

Haven't we been down this road before? Granted their skill sets are totally different but if I had to choose between Sim and Hunter I would choose Hunter no questions asked. Hell I'd choose Konopka over Sim.

He brings a nice boost to Bridgeport, let’s hope there’s where he spends most of his time

I'm all for it

Sim lit it up in Bridgeport last year and can be a significant scoring punch and support for the young team. If he helps out Rhett, Ullstrom and the others, great. There is almost no vet presence down there anymore. I would like to see them lock up Colliton too.

I was gonna say he's an AHL scoring muchine

which is where he’ll be spending most of his time anyway. I like the idea of signing some proven, no longer NHL caliber vets to try to raise the competition level down in the AHL. I would like BPort to be a winning team. With guys like Rakh, Ullstrom, DiBo, De Haan, Donovan, Ness all starting in the AHL, it could be nice to have a hardworking guy like Sim around. He’s like a hockey version of Crash Davis.

They signed Colliton a couple weeks ago

And my problem with Sim is that this guy has some jedi-mind trick ability over management. This guy was on a 2 way deal last year as well and he managed to not only made the opening day roster but stuck around for 43 games. Not to mention when he does stick around he finds himself getting significant, and mostly unwarranted, playing time.

Under Gordon

Not under Capuano so much.

Muscle for Bridgeport. No problem with that. Good work ethic, hopefully will rub off on the kids down there.

I missed Jon Sim

Sure he is an annoying nat to the other teams, but he isn’t a complete waste on the fourth line. He can get to the net pretty well, he just doesn’t have the skills to finish in the NHL. Hopefully he show the kids how to hustle in BP.

I've always been fine with him as BPT depth

Just please leave him down there.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

Good "depth" signing

Jon Sim excelled in Bridgeport under Jack Capuano. He was brought in under Nolan to be a middle six agitator and double digit goal contributor. That didn’t work out… as most things in 2008-2010 didn’t. If he is willing to work in Bridgeport and possibly get a shot later in the year. If we’re on a 500+ man game lost pace… then great.
My biggest concern is the same reason I don’t like the Rolston deal, the team is deeper in prospects that we’d like to see get time before Sim.
That just needs to be managed well and this will work out..

SIM WAS NOT SIGNED

From the NY Islanders official Twitter:
Jon Sim has not been resigned. A glitch in Bridgeport’s email sent a press release from last summer. We apologize for any confusion.

Honestly this makes tons of sense

He was signed on the exact same day last year, which would be an odd coincidence. Plus why would this guy except a deal to pretty much play in Bridgeport when he outright refused an assignment there last year.

Good News

Sim has not been signed. I want from WTF to way to go in twenty minutes.

We need a big mean defenseman who can play PP and a rugged right winger to protect JT. Otherwise we have enough players on the roster.

Yeah, let the young guys play in BPT. One or two vets is okay, though.

Good "non" Signing

That was easy enough.

he/she who would even consider hiring Hunter @ this stage with his injuries and foot speed

is either living in the past, or is easily parted from their money. Sorry…..Sim would be valuable in the AHL as he stars in that league and even though everyone knows not all AHL players make it to the show, you still need a solid balanced farm team, b/c that helps the development of the players who do make it to show….and for Isles, the next 2 to 4 years is all about development. Hunter has been a non-factor for a while now, 4 mil owed over 2 years to a guy who will never be what he was, and no matter how good of a checker he was, Hunter was always slow. It isn’t personal, it’s business. Sim is without a doubt the better player for the Bridge…that is, if i had to choose between Sim or Hunter…

by CanadianIsleslifer on Aug 3, 2011 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

I was just stating my personal preference since I always loved Hunter as a player.

I was really excited to see him play for Capuano. I think we would’ve seen a Trent Renaissance, but I understand the business side of why he was traded. All good things must end and most players will leave or get traded sooner or later.

However even now I would take Hunter over Sim. Sim wouldn’t be able to do anything more in the AHL than Colliton already does.

The New York Islanders....they make opposing goalies look gooooood.

by Metalstar on Aug 3, 2011 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

disagree...

i loved Hunter as a player too, but gravity is a bitch and has long since caught up to Hunter…on the other hand, Sim has proven he can do a lot more than Colliton offensively in the AHL…although Colliton is also a valuable AHLer and occassional callup….if your asking me career wise, of course I’d take Hunter, but if we’re talking about the farm team and not the NHL, and it is the year 2011, this is not even a contest - Sim hands down. The choice is really door number one where you get absolutely nothing, zilch…notta, but you will lose some money….or door number two where you get a guy that is valuable offensively on the farm, cheap and can be a fourth line occassional call up…

Now if we’re talking strictly NHL, I wouldn’t even consider Sim or Hunter.

Let's break down Jon Sim

Positive: Skates Fast
Negative: Can’t turn (ask just about any goalie)

Positive: He likes to shoot…
Negative: …at anything around the net…
Double Negative: …and empty nets confuse him like a golden retriever watching a
                                chimp ride a lawmower backwards

Positive: He truly has the heart of a champion
Negative: His skills are that of an AHL champion

Positive: He is one of the few respectable agitators in the NHL (that is no minor feat)
Negative: The fans are agitated just about every time he has a breakaway on the PK

Positive: He is great in 2 of the 3 zones
Negative: You want him to stay in those 2 zones and never cross into the 3rd zone
unless there is absolutely no one around him or he is not carrying the puck.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
