Pick 'em: Your 2011-12 Islanders Power Play Goal Leader

So it's August. I know it's quiet. You know it's quiet. That doesn't mean we're not kept awake at night by visions of Mark Streit slapshots* dancing in our heads.

2010-11 GP PPtoi PPG PPP
John Tavares 79 3:30 9 24
P.A. Parenteau 81 3:29 9 20
Matt Moulson 82 3:21 9 15
Blake Comeau 77 2:30 5 12
Josh Bailey 70 2:23 5 9

These are the top five New York Islanders power play goal scorers from last season. (Michael Grabner, remember, had less than a minute per game on the PP and ended up with two PPG.)

Who will lead the team in powerplay goals this coming season? Poll and room for comments below.

Write in: Streit.

He scored 19 goals in 2 seasons with the Isles. If his shoulder is good, 10-12 is reasonable.

Didn’t realize Parenteau had 9. That’s a lot for a pass-first PP guy. He probably gets the spot on the left half boards.

Hamonic or Jurcina could pile them up if the other teams are going to overplay to the Streit/JT side. (A little more room in the shooting lane and I think more of Hamonic’s slappers are on net.)

I think goals will be pretty evenly spread over the 1st PP unit.

Who also tends to miss the broad side of the barn when 3 feet away from it. I was watching some highlights and had totally forgotten how often he missed goals or got robbed from right in front of the net.

A fist bump for PA

Because if I didn’t vote for him, well… you know…

Also, thanks to Mikb and my comment on the Markov comment, I can’t think of Streit taking a slap shot without hearing the slow mo music from 6 Million Dollar Man.

yes

I was in a meeting with a contractor, they all ran out of the building, I started sketching some ideas for the design we were working on for when they returned. – My house is on a crawlspace and it’s old. Kind of felt like my son walking through the living room – He’s a pretty big kid.

thanks...

I’m on the first floor of a 4 story building… after about 5 seconds of the building shaking I showed some of th locals how fast a 46 year old man could move 250 lbs of semi-gelatinus mass… but even better was my sister in NY who new about it and called my cell phone before I got out of the building.
One of my analysts said, “earthquakes are the worst. Here in Mississippi we at least get some warning when a hurricane or tornado is gonna hit… there are no warnings with earthquakes”
Obviously she never met my sister.

Yea

Down in northern VA. It shook pretty good here. Everyone in the area seemed to get sent home at the same time. Thankfully I don’t work in the city because it must have been one of those 3 hours to go 10 miles commutes.

With Streit and Rolston

manning the points I’d say that Tavares gets ~15, and Molson might lose some time to Nino, comeau and Martin, but he might reach double digits as well. People forget that this team only functioned as an NHL team for about 55 games last year. this year they will be an 82 game team, and if healthy they should far exceed last year’s numbers… there is plenty of room for improvement.

I thought about adding Nino

Figured no one expects he could lead the team in PPG, but if things go right for him he could be part of the mix, esp. the second unit or if (Bossy forbid) Moulson ever misses a game.

I believe JT will become set up MM for most

so I pick MM. I believe both can be awesome PPG guys but that JT has the abilty to fidn MM better than MM can find JT

Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all

by Rickfansince76 on Aug 23, 2011 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

9 PPG

is too few for the likes of Tavares. I like him for a big jump.

by 19InARow on Aug 23, 2011 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

It's a Draw.

I say JT and MM finish with the same number again to lead the team. Nothing like a healthy rivalry between good friends.

I had to go with Grabs,

if only because he so fast he has 5 goals already… wait, sh*t, he scored another. Dang that kid has wheels!

Went with Tavares.

My gut tells me that, between his talent, two years under his belt and the talent around him, this is going to be his eruption year.

On a semi-related note, I think that not only will Grabs lead the league in short-handed goals, I believe he’ll break the single season record of 13, set in the 1988-89 season by…wait for it….Mario Lemieux.

I got a feeling about this season…good things…good things…

Jeff Carter to Columbus? Wait, I've seen this one before, it was called Shanahan to Hartford. Advice? Don't buy a Carter jersey.

Voted for Grabs

Not because I think he will – that will probably be Tavares – but because the line was just too good.

It's weird but

every time I think about the depth of this team I have to stop and gather myself. Im not used to it. But when you think about the power play units they’re pretty darn exciting. I would have to figure the two units at this moment would be:

Moulson-Tavares-Parenteau
Streit-Rolston

Grabner-Nielsen-Comeau
Okposo-MacDonald

I hate to see Okposo on the point but if I recall the second half of last year those two forward lines were what Cappy went with and Okposo-MacDonald was the first blueline pairing.

I went to an Islanders Power Play and all I got was this broken stick

by Chris McNally on Aug 23, 2011 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

If Streit can hammer the puck...

…I see a righty with him on the 1st unit. But if Rolston is taking the slappers, perhaps Streit is on the left point feeding him. (In that setup, Streit can sneak in backdoor when JT has the puck. That might not be so bad.) Grabner-Nielsen-Comeau sounds good to me. Okposo-MacDonald is good, but I would like to see Hamonic-MacDonald if Hamonic doesn’t play 1st unit.

Lots of options for the 1st two units!

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Aug 23, 2011 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Voted Moulson

because I think he’ll still be the one hanging around the net doing the dirty work and will get a ton more chances like that with Streit back.

by afrosupreme on Aug 23, 2011 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

I agree to a certain extent

But often the guy doing the dirty work in front doesn’t end up with the goal. Moulson created a few goals this past season with screens. And sometimes he chips at a rebound and then JT finishes it off.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Aug 23, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

True

my prediction in part depends on how many of those screened shots go in off his hip, arm, ankle, etc!

by afrosupreme on Aug 23, 2011 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Moulson

Obviously it’s possible Moulson’s PP TOI will be reduced at some point, though that would be a mistake in my opinion. As some other aspects of Moulson’s game are underrated, I think the same goes for his PP ability. The PP however was best in terms of producing shots when Moulson was on. And he personally got more shots off than anyone else, and from closest distance.

Overall, JT’s too likely to improve to not be the favourite, but I voted Moulson. He’s been as good or better as JT on the PP over the last two years and I think the better support from the points will certainly not hurt his game there. Also, Doug Weight loved that shot-pass from the right point to Moulson’s stick and I’m pretty sure he’s going to teach them that play in detail.

by BenHasna on Aug 23, 2011 6:45 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Thanks for that

Agree Tavares is the easy favorite choice, so I was happy to see some arguments for someone else.

Tavares has that sneaky way of getting open at the back door … I feel like if the rest of the PP unit improves then the defense will let him slip again. On the other hand, his passing can be so ridiculous he could easily help someone have a career year on the PP.

by Dominik on Aug 24, 2011 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

For me their PP definitely will be one of the most fascinating things to watch this season. I really have no idea how good their units can be.

I was a bit disappointed when I looked into some of Rolston’s numbers. He’s got a great shot, no question about that, and he’ll score some goals, but his sfon/60 and also assists/60 have been a bit average over the last few years. Might be that he wasn’t always used with the 1st units and that definitely hurts your numbers there, but it really seems a lot of his former team mates used on the point (Foster, Martin, Greene, maybe Burns) were as good or better in terms of creating offense on the PP. Again, surely, he’ll score his goals, but to me it looks like he’s just a fantastic shooter and – though that asset of course delivers great value on the PP – not really a PP specialist.

On the other hand I think A-Mac and Grabner have great potential and, if TOI management for them allows, both should be used a bit more this season. And if possible in place of Comeau who, except from Edmonton’s horrible unit, was maybe the worst PP guy in the league last year. And, though samples are much smaller, his numbers looked very similar in 08 and 09.

by BenHasna on Aug 24, 2011 5:46 AM EDT up reply actions

But I wouldn’t be surprised if Moulson leads the team in PP goals.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
