Where are all these rumors coming from?

All of a sudden the Islanders are all over Hockeybuzz.com with rumors about the islanders making the kind of moves we've all been hoping for  this summer.  1 is of a potential 3 team deal between the Islanders, Flames, and Sabres but the other one is the one that confuses me. The Islanders could be in on Scott Gomez? As a cap move maybe, but where would he fit is this did turn out to happen? And if the 3 team deal would go through, who do you think would be involved in the trade?

Thinking seriously,

Gomez only comes if we get a something moderately useful with him. And Sabers/Flames deal would likely bring back a d-man, probably Bouwmeester or someone on the Sabers because the Sabers have some cap problems right now(Sabers might be throwing in a player cheaply because of that in a trade for a pick or 2 or something). That’s just my guessing, but don’t believe anything until it’s done.

which Bowie?

The looming 2-way stud from Florida, or the invisible man from Calgary?

Yeah, he's become a complete conundrum(spell?).

He may not have another 35pts or 8/10goal season in him. Do not touch! lol. Well I wouldn’t want him at his cost, but I’d believe he’d comeback if we were dealing with Calgary because of cap reasons.

I'd worry that he'd play lousy and force a trade

He bitched his way out of Florida and has always stated a preference for playing near home; he’s an Edmonton boy.

And you spelled “conundrum” correctly. =D

The only thing I wonder

is whether they want to add another decent sized contract with two thoughts in mind:

1) Nino doesn’t make the team out of camp.

2) They want DP to BP to be an option.

Right now they are 2.3 from the floor. Bailey probably cuts that in half. So if you want #2 to be an option (and #1 happens) you need a guy making between 5 and 6. Gomez is a 7.3 hit, but his real money goes 7.5, 5.5, 4.5 over the next three seasons. I don’t love Gomez, but I could see how he could be useful for the Isles with regards to the cap floor while not actually costing Wang that kind of money.

I could see ozzy’s plan coming together, where the bulk of what we provide is cap relief, take on Gomez, but also get another piece (maybe even a prospect) back as part of it.

a step further

as i tweeted to Dee, Eklund’s average for scooping a trade is under the Mendoza line
i bear no ill will to him, nor do i toward Mendoza
(for non baseballers, that means his average is under 20%)
so 4 out of 5 rumors are complete hogwash (a word we need to make a comeback)

Could also be between an East and a West team.

Probably forwards involved, though maybe D as well. Don’t be surprised if a goalie or two is in the mix. More later.

Whats going on

Is the Isles have cap space and teams are over the cap. Combine that with Bailey’s contract negotiation taking forever and you have a storm for rumors.

Also, didn’t realize it was Eklund, who is notoriously bad

99% of these deals he reports doesn't go through

Especially with the Isles. Snow keeps his cards tight. I’m not saying he’s completely full of it but I wouldn’t get too excited unless you hear specific names and from better sources (like the TSN guys). Incarceratedbob on twitter is a better source for Isles stuff.

HB should stand for Holy Bull****

That being said, I want no part of Gomez unless J.Tinordi or D.Kristo are heading back this way for taking on such a contract. As for Calgary or Buffalo, nothing excites me (Morrison), unless it was a blockbuster e.g.( Iginla, Bowmeester, or Vanek) which is’nt happening.

Why, from Timex Social Club, obviously

Look at all these rumors, surrounding me every day
I just need some time, some time to get away.

Phew. I thought it was Fleetwood Mac.

I don’t really like Fleetwood Mac, so I’m glad Timex Social Club is on point here.

I would start singing Fleetwood to you

But I’m terribly susceptible to someone singing a bad song and getting it stuck in my head. So it’s mutually assured destruction from my end.

The title of this post just put that hilarious song in my head (which I guess proves my point).

Iginla

Boy what a dream that would be!

by jonny4gets on Aug 23, 2011 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

I hope Iginla remains a dream

Never mind the NMC, Snow would have to give up half of the farm for him. I like him, but his price is to high.

by Francesca on Aug 23, 2011 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Iginla is my dream player

to line up with JT.

You know, all that really has to happen is that Calgary overrates some Isles players/prospects. I wouldn’t be against dealing Parenteau/Prospect/Draft picks for him as long as it wasn’t multiple first rounders.

The Darryl Sutter days are over in Calgary

What he left is an aging team and a weak prospects pool. This year they drafted Sven Bärtschi with the 13th pick (after two years without a first). He automatically became their best prospect by a mile. Add to it the Tim Erixon debacle: it’s not pretty. Feaster opted for a soft rebuild (whatever that means) and is not a fool. For Iginla he would want the maximum possible, e.g. prospects (the good ones) and high draft pics. No need for a Parenteau, they have enough of them.
The question is: “Is it worth it for the Isles NOW?”
My response is no. Iginla is the kind of player who puts over the top a team who is in cup contention, but the Islanders are at least a couple of years away. I see Snow doing that kind of trade in the future (not necessarily for Iginla), but not now.

by Francesca on Aug 23, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

* only one year without a first

Erixson was drafted 2009. I forgot about the Swedish exception. Only two years time to sign them.

by Francesca on Aug 23, 2011 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

No reason to Overpay for Iginla, but like I said if they would take the package I mentioned, I’d jump on it in a heartbeat. I’d even replace Parenteau with Comeau.

i know KO

would be happy about Iginla coming over to LI, i remember his rookie profile interview with Deb, he mentioned how he looked up to him as a player to aspire to be…(no historical accuracy guarantees are claimed in above statement)

I remember that too

But it might be a bit of a chicken and egg thing. I dont know if he was talking to the media about Iginla only because he idolized him, or if the media brought him up so much due to their similar ethnicity that he got more familiar with talking about him.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Aug 24, 2011 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I think the KO/Iginla thing was played up by the media because of the ethnicity thing

It’s just the kind of lazy coverage to cover the lulls in action on draft day I come to expect. That being said I am sure that KO looked up to the fact that Iginla is a productive, skilled hard driving power forward and probably made some mention of that fact that the media ran with.

Please no Scott Gomez

At this point in his career he is just paid too much for too little production. I guess having our top three lines next season centered by JT, Gomez and Franz could make some sense and would allow us to be patient with Strome but not at the $ Gomez is making.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
