Third Jersey Info: My call to the Isles front office

So I was disgusted by the news that the Third Jersey was being reported as being done. I called the NYI offices a few times asking to speak with someone in marketing. After being completely dismissed by Lauren Margiotta, Marketing Coordinator - who refused to discuss the new sweater in any way and repeatedly directed me to "Email customer service" - I called and asked for Terry Goldstein, Director of Retail Operations.

I got through to Mr. Goldstein and he was initially frustrated by the call, and attempted to tell me that with the recession and other problems in the world, a third jersey was something no one should be worrying about. I explained, after a little contentious back and forth, that my way of relaxing and being distracted from the world's worries, was to watch my Islanders, and read the blogs and websites.

He then relaxed and began to hear my concerns. He stated repeatedly that:

1. the home royal and the away whites were not going anywhere for many years.

2. the black design is not official, and that "anyone can photoshop" - but at no point did he deny that the one being shown on this site and icethetics (http://www.icethetics.info/blog/2011/8/21/new-looks-for-a-new-season.html) is not final.

3. the process was a top to bottom organizational decision involving eight players who modeled and had input on the different variants.

4. in referencing the Montreal Canadiens 100th year anniversary jerseys, he stated that many of those variants infuriated that franchises fans. He indicated that third jerseys come and go - and that as long as the primary home and away looks didn't change - things would be fine.

Overall, he was courteous and took time out of his day to hear my concerns. I truly appreciate that! As for the black third jersey - it sucks!

it’s still not as bad as that awful bear head Bruins jersey

I don't mind the ISLANDERS block lettering

The color scheme is too busy…reminds me too much of the waves on the big jersey mistake of the 90s. The black just doesn’t work. I’m not opposed to some black but it just doesn’t go with everything else. I would like the block lettering in orange on the classic blue. Maybe a long stripe down the length of the sleeve. Small jersey number above and to the side of the block letters. Four stars along the bottom stripes on the back perhaps.

No Sleep 'til....

THIS:

third jerseys come and go – and that as long as the primary home and away looks didn’t change – things would be fine.

^This is why people need to put this into perspective and not be so upset.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Hilarious. If that’s the case maybe he should find a more important line of work.

with the recession … a third jersey was something no one should be worrying about

In other words, with limited income and so much economic uncertainty, “Don’t waste your money buying these ugly things.” Thanks for the sound advice Mr Director of Retail Operations.

"With the recession..."

…this is EXACTLY what the Director of Retail Operations should be worrying about – not ticking off loyal Islanders fans with another uniform debacle, following the Queen Mother of Debacles (Fishsticks), the Knave of Eyesores (the Traffic Cone third), and the Court Jester Era (the ridiculous RBK pajamas).

Dammit, we finally look like an NHL team and not a bunch of kids with do-it-yourself uniform kits from the craft store. For the love of Torrey, don’t screw this up. It’s so easy not to screw this up.

We may be in the box, but you get the penalty.

Exactly.

That’s what I’d be most curious to find out, get a poll on this site.. and even Islander fans in general on who is going to go out and buy this thing. You gotta figure that if sales practically don’t exist, the Islanders will scrap this even sooner than they initially plan to

if people dont buy them and they sit there then they thewy will go on sale... but then people WILL buy them

Now theres a conundrum lol.

They really do look just like the Mets. Except for the lettering.

i never even thought something like that was even possible.

lol

I actually don’t hate them.
But I am also one of those weirdos that liked the third blacks that Dom often disparages. I just wish that the NHL would go back to home whites.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
