Charles Wang Reacts to Islanders, Nassau Coliseum Referendum Defeat

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I could spend time discussing how I don't think this is it for the Islanders in the metro area -- maybe not even (shockingly) for the Islanders in Nassau County -- but the reality of the 30-year lease that has crippled this team for decades is that ... it ain't over until 2015. So we have as many as three or four more years to occasionally incessantly mull over the options in an environment of uncertainty, against a political backdrop where building it all by yourself isn't acceptable and building it with public help is likewise unacceptable. Almost morbidly, County politicians on both sides are already talking about RFPs...for an arena. Yet again. Good luck with that; it's worked so well before.

Coverage and links and stuff to come as we find them and people add them in comments. Maybe a few more missives from us authors here in the days ahead. But for the near-term, I prefer to digest it from the man himself, Charles Wang, the longest-serving solo owner in club history, who has been told by the constituents and shakers of the land where he grew up, "No, don't build it yourself. Oh, and no we won't help you build it either." (Sounds like a municipality that doesn't want an areener or pro team anymore. Good thing the region is big enough to conceive of other options. It's not over for Nassau, but it's no longer in their hands.)

Video of Wang's remarks is here, at Fios (it's after Ed Mangano's, um, sunny remarks). [Update: Transcript of Wang's remarks is here.] The salient parts for me go like this:

Star-divide

It's a very emotional time for us. We are not going to make any comments on any specific next steps. We are committed to Nassau Coliseum until the year 2015. And like we said all along, we will honor our lease. We now have a season to concentrate on a team that is bursting with a young core of talent, sprinkled with the right mix of veterans.

Training camp is just around the corner. I can't wait until the puck drops, at our home opener, which is Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. So come out and watch us play. ... And I have one last thing: Let's go Islanders.

As a hockey fan who thinks about this team pretty much every day -- just like you do -- I have to echo that sentiment. I can't control where Plans X, Y and Z go, so I'm not going to occupy myself with them all season long. I don't believe this is the end -- but hell, if the next four seasons are the end, then I might as well enjoy them.

Cheers to all of you natives and ex-pats who occupied yourselves with this, and worked so hard to educate other voters. And goodness, like Wang said early on, goodness, cheers to all those employees and volunteers who gave countless hours to this. As much as this disappoints me, who was guided to this faraway team by my Al Arbour-worshiping father, I know I can't conceive of how much this affects you on an even deeper emotional level.

So don't let me discourage you from discussing the alternatives and other options for this franchise's future in 2015. Those are lively topics around here with some interesting ideas. But forgive me for echoing Wang here: For the most part I plan to focus on the team that plays the 2011-12 season, since hockey is made up of theatrical unknowns that I pay to watch, while politics and development dealings are theatrical unknowns that reveal themselves in carefully coded press releases.

Indeed, training camp is just around the corner. Blake Comeau's arbitration is this Thursday. Let's go (and stay near, please) Islanders.

Too bad. Hope it's for the best.

Nassau has been screwing wang over at every turn anyway, so hopefully(and I’d guess likely for now→if we stay on the island) it’s for the best. Time to move on.

Let’s hope Comeau doesn’t go to arbitration Thursday and garth gets a deal done first. Just ask Tommy Salo how fun those arbitration hearings can be, lol.

Spot on.

Could the guy be any more tone deaf? He clearly didn’t win his position from being charismatic and articulate. A simple “we must respect the democratic process” would have sufficed. His attempt to turn a bad situation into something good made him look very, very foolish.

Mangano isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer

But, unlike a lot of his contemporaries, at least he got something on the table in an effort to finally move the chains. They lost to a better coached team that got out the exact message they needed to.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could see what people are thinking during those pauses? “I love…I love…what we do here” might look something like this:

What do I love?)….I love…(I really do love Kit Kats, though. And that brunette over there seems very loving. Why does everyone look so angry? What am I doing here? Why are we here? Why can’t we love what we do here?)…what we do here.”

I don’t think there’s a politician in Nassau who can do a damn thing right, at least if we use their professional performance as an indicator. Besides, Spitzer is a Democrat. Mangano’s much more likely to get his Larry Craig on (OUCH! – cue Seinfeld’s “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”).

by afrosupreme on Aug 2, 2011 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I understand that Wang has made attempts

but there are mitigating circumstances and horrible economic timing playing against the Isles here.
Something that needs to be addressed is that Wang does/did have to ability to increase payroll and bring in players that fans want to pay to see…thus increasing attendance and revenue. For the most part he has not done this. I don’t call Doug Weight in the Twillight of his career an “A” signing. This also translates to the teams lack of success for…well a pretty long time. If you don’t have a product that people want to see on a nightly basis, you can’t expect to sell out often, same thing if your team is not an elite team. Everything about the Colesium and its state of disrepair goes against the team as well. Who wants to go there?

This isn’t a bashing. Unlike other Ranger fans, I see the value in this once proud franchise and would love a rekindling of the once great, but now stagnant rivalry we had. I do think, however, that Wang is partially to blame for all of this. Its great that you guys did well in the last few drafts but the fact remains the team has been dismal and that is the reason for the success in the draft. Unfortunately youth, is not a selling point to a financial vote on a new arena when snooty people who don’t appreciate hockey are concerned.

I moved from Suffolk Cty(I was there 34yrs) to Fl. in 2005. I used to love to go to the Colesium. In fact I saw more Islander games than Ranger games for a while. I appreciated that. If I was living on LI, I would want the team to remain there…..maybe in Suffolk. There’s space for an arena in the Patchogue, Medford, Holbrook area and that’s the center of LI. They could make it work. I used to live close to the old Commack arena.

Unfortunately, the economy has everyone checking their belts. Sports teams are not high on the list of priorities. This would have been an easier sell if the team was winning. And anyone planning this vote should have seen this.

I think this proposal was put together in haste and obvious factors going against the team were overlooked or maybe even ignored.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

by earthworm on Aug 2, 2011 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Wang brought in Yashin, Peca, Smyth and upped the payroll, they made the playoffs and no arena deal in sight.

It has become chicken and the egg. After all of the losses over ten years I’d be hard pressed to create even further losses knowing nothing I do will get the arena situation changed.

In haste

It’s still unclear to me how this proposal was put together. News was absent for a long time, then one day Mangano was ready. I’ve no doubt the wrong backs were not scratched in just such a way. I’ve no doubt that’s been a major obstacle from Day 1.

One thing I can agree with, if this was their knockout punch it was poorly organized.

I defend Wang’s willingness to take on tremendous losses, but his public negotiating and PR style has been abysmal. He is poor at getting the message out, presents the data only after misinformation is spread and then disappears into a hole when things don’t go as hoped.

There never seems to be a long term strategic plan and too much seems to hinge on the political will of whomever is in power. Wang has been allied with both sides of the political spectrum at this point and still has nothing to show for it. Yet no one ever seems to feel any fallout from delaying the building of a new stadium besides Islander fans that wait another couple more years before the team has “stability.”

Then

he needs to hire someone who can do this for him. He is making a sales pitch. That is the bottom line. And he did it very poorly this time around.

Let me say this. Even though it failed, the Lighthouse Project had an AMAZING sales pitch. All the facets were covered, soup to nuts. And that plan had a lot of public support, but was killed by a special interest minority. Why a similar approach wasn’t taken this time is beyond me.

He did not have an answer for Francesa on what he was going to do if the vote was no. Well his answer was, “I’ll convince Charles to stay.” Part of me believes that within the next 2 years there is going to be some pandering and begging on the part of the politicians. In 2012 I expect there to be some MAJOR a$$-kissing going on.

I was so looking forward to this season. Now? Now… I jut feel like “what’s the point?” I can imagine three more years of what? An NVMC that is empty… do you really think that anything short of a MAJOR playoff run will bring any fans to games, knowing that the team is gone? Do we think ANY free agents will sign here, knowing the situation is so up in the air? Do we think JT will sign here with no certainty? This is the end of the road.

If Wang was smart (and honestly, he isn’t) he would begin work immediately on a new project—the fanbase is demoralized. We need some sort of certainty. Don’t keep us sitting here waiting. If the team is gone, tell us. If you are going to stay, tell us. Just end this misery.

no way

It’s more important than ever to show Wang and the league that the Islanders are beloved and that they can draw where they are. We have to make it as hard as possible for the NHL to turn their back on the market. If the team shows it can be successful again, a lot of pressure can be put against the sticks in the mud and curmudgeons and NIMBYs who have nothing better to do with their time than to spoil sport.

This ticks me off, but it also motivates me. Now, I not only want to see the Islanders win, I want them to stay just to stick in the eye of Jeremy Jacobs and Kate Murray.

We may be in the box, but you get the penalty.

Newsday
Legis. Wayne Wink (D- Roslyn ) said the county could push for proposals that would allow for private investment for a new arena and development. “We need to make sure the Islanders stay and we have a Coliseum we can work with,” Wink said. “But we also need to make sure the private sector is heavily involved if not exclusively involved in the redevelopment of the hub area.”

Legis. Dave Denenberg (D- Merrick ) suggested that any request for proposals should offer the development opportunity to anyone who could provide an anchor tenant for the arena and was willing to put in the most private funding.

….

Nassau County Democratic Committee chairman Jay Jacobs , meanwhile, has suggested the county could sell the Coliseum to Wang, leaving the rest of the land for development.

Jacobs said Wang could then privately pay to build a new arena, either on his own, through an investment group, or with the help of personal seat licenses — a per-seat fee for the right to buy season tickets, which is now popular in professional football.

this is going to get close to where this ends up. Wang is going to end up with the sweetheart deal he wants, but he’s going to have to raise/invest 50% of the cost of the arena with the county putting up the rest.

My hope

is that they sell Wang the land. At a loss, of course, as it is about to become worthless anyway. Then, Wang can build this arena the way he wants it. Every January 1, he send the County a nice letter and takes a full-page Newsday ad telling them how much money they missed out on in lease payments and revenue sharing.

I don’t know if anyone was watching News12 for the results last night, but coupled with the Arena vote was Suffolk Community College trying to avoid a tuition hike. No doubt Nassau Community is next. If only there were some guaranteed source of revenue close by which could help offset County expenditures on projects like that…

I think the only way to keep the Isles here

without a new arena is to let them stay rent-free. Then Wang can actually afford to put some money into fixing the arena and can “pay for it himself” like everyone else wants.

Nassau deserves to lose the islanders...

the only message this sends to me is that the people of nassau county (and possibly long island in general) doesn’t care about the islanders. i expected people to man up and vote yes, but apparently there wasn’t even a higher voter turnout. what does that tell you? no one cares. if gary bettman doesn’t want to see what happened with atlanta, then he and his cronies better get involved and save this franchise or else the biggest travesty in sports will happen. charles wang is not going to keep this team any longer and has exhausted his incredible patience. the only hope i think this team has is by winning and putting out a valuable product out on the ice. maybe that in itself will help change the misfortunes of this franchise…i’m tired of all of this. i’m sick of getting ragged on by rangers and devils fans who tell me this team is moving. i’m actually starting to believe them.

Those fw fans were into the dynasty and lost interest when the team’s performance started heading south in the late ’80s (which pissed me off no end). One big reason we lost this round

I am a resident of Nassau (Long Beach to be specific), and when I went to vote at 4pm, my area had turnout of 250 people. Not bad for a small group. However leading up to this I received no less than THREE phone calls, pleading us to vote NO to INCREASED PROPERTY TAXES. That’s all you need to say in Long Beach to get people to vote NO.

Not a single call from the Vote YES Team.

Maybe

I just finished reading about 8 of well over 600 comments on this news story on ESPN (it’s all I could take) and seeing the ignorance of the commenters, many who I am sure saw this one story and based there decision. Also by there logic, the Blackhawks and Penguins and Boston should have been dissolved years ago, the Blues need to move as well as Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Los Angeles and realistically Edmonton should be forgotten as well. Really pathetic.
Although I have been removed from Nassau for 12 years or so, currently out of country, I want to believe the best for the county which i grew up and believe that this is not a vote against the Islanders, but the county just telling the powers(?) that be to let Mr. Wang do as HE pleases, let him build his own arena, sell him the land(funny, I don’t think he will buy it at full value at htis point) and put up his own arena, let him pay his taxes and have the county more or less out of it. They will have essentially lost money but it won’t affect the residents wallet, There is still a chance to make this a win for the county, but I think full value is out of reach, the pols screwed the pooch big time. And as a previous commenter mentioned that he received 3 calls saying to vote NO, I understand from family in Nassau that this was the case all over. Two callers did not even state a specific group, just to Vote NO. Really sad, short sightedness(?). Anyway I retain faith that the team will be accessible in the area for a very long time and will see another cup for the franchise sooner than later, stay positive. Want to kick it to Nassau? Let Wilpon build them a facility and have everyone afraid to drive through Nassau as opposed to Queens. Let Queens reap the benefit, I lived in Queens for years and I loved it.

Good Luck, Stay Positive!!!

though there are a lot of loopholes to jump through. Will Wang sell the team to Prokhorov or would he instead just rent out space? Is the Barclays Center even retrofitted for NHL hockey and if so, how many seats?

Personally, it’s the best possible solution to me, even if the arena is on the shorter side for NHL hockey (some people have bandied about a number of 14,000 seats, though that hasn’t been declared official yet). I don’t think the size of the arena should be a dealbreaker, especially since Shea Stadium used to seat 52,000 while Citifield now sits about 11,000 less than that. Really, what’s the difference between seating 16,000 and seating 14,000? (If your answer is 2,000, then you are correct) Throw enough money at Prokhorov and they’ll figure something out.

Charles Wang isnt the problem

Why would he sell if the team stayed in NY? I am sure anyone would sign up for 14k per night, Winnipeg is smaller than Atlanta….

by Briofny on Aug 2, 2011 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say he's the problem

If the Islanders move to Brooklyn, then Wang will be missing out on some serious revenue streams since he’ll most likely not be getting any money from concession/concert events/parking and he will have to sign a lease with Prokhorov, which would put him at a severe disadvantage financially. At that point, it would most likely just be best for him to cash in and just sell the team to Prokhorov – that way, the team will be getting more money from an owner with a greater revenue stream and the Islanders would be staying in New York.

MTS Centre in Winnipeg

Has 15000 seats for hockey. They are sold out for essentially the next 5 years with the season ticket commitments that were made. If the Barclays Center can hold 15-16k for hockey, sell the team to Prokhorov and move them there so they atleast stay in the NY area. If the Islanders end up becoming the team that moves to Quebec City, that would be very sad, although the games would be sold out.

Short Sightedness Yes

Very sad day for the Isles, but the people who should be disappointed are the Citizens of Nassau. The same people who voted no are the same waiters, waitresses, small business owners, etc. who will see their businesses and jobs close/leave when the Colesium closes (which if the Isles leave is inevidable). I grew up in Westchester as a big Isles fan (my mother is from LI), now that all her cousins (over 20) have left, and my grandparents generation has passed, why the heck would I EVER have a reason to go the Nassau (except to drive through to go to Montauk). It drives me up the wall with all these politicians saying Wang should pay, WELL THEN SELL HIM THE LAND!

The only way the Isles stay is they do that, and he can build what he wants, or by some miracle of GOD the win the Stanley Cup, and then to avoid embarrassment, the Politicians help something new get through (although Wang and Betteman have said Dec 2011 a decision needs to be made).

Queens is not the answer, the Wilpons are more broke than Nassau…..CAN ANYONE SAY BROOKLYN? NEW ARENA OPENING IN TIME (CAN STILL BE THE ISLES!)

So much for Brooklyn - No Islands in Missouri

Just read the blog from the NETSDAILY – In which the configuration, capacity and sight lines for hockey at [English bank of some sort] Center: Talk of Brooklyn Islanders Spurred by Monday Vote But Hockey Unlikely – NetsDaily – see most recent post

Read the latest article on the blog about this

“But more recently, word inside the Nets is that nothing can be ruled out, that the arena can “definitely” host the NHL, whether pre-season, a small number of home games or something more. Nothing has been determined but no one is dismissing the possibility anymore."

I agree with this

I feel like Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment is of course going to change their tune once the referendum is turned down and Wang starts to explore other opportunities. Barclays benefits way more than Wang does if they can attract the Islanders.

But is it worth it for Wang?

He bought the Islanders to give something back to the community. If he moves the team to Brooklyn, he’s doing nothing for Long Island (not that Long Island deserves it at this point), AND he’s just a tenant. I think for Wang to move the team, or to even have the team at all, he has to get a development deal to make it worth the while.

I hope you’re right, Fab, but my gut tells me Brooklyn won’t happen. If it’s going to be anywhere, it’ll be Queens. The RFP to develop land around City Field is due in less than 2 weeks.

Well, the OLD people in the community did. The young ones, as is always the case, were silenced. I’m sure certain people will point to the monster storms and proclaim that God didn’t want Nassau to spend any more money.

How many people were voting at 18? (I was, but many who complain weren't)
The young ones, as is always the case, were silenced. talking about voting and didn’t

The problem with these get out the vote agendas is that the young talk about issues, get enraged by issues and then become apathetic when it comes to voting because there is no choice that meets their ideal solution. The jaded and elderly, know there is no easy answer and just go out and vote on the most basic of principles (e.g. taxes, no new taxes).

I was talking about recent college graduates, etc.

People who take the LIRR to work, and were stranded on the way home. They were unable to vote because it was in one party’s interest not to keep the polls open longer. Therefore, young voices were silenced. They were just slightly older voices than yours. :-)

I am a slightly older voice, I call Weight kiddo, but even recent grads are pathetically apathetic when it comes to voting.

Both parties called it. This vote wasn’t even close and Wang knew it when the polls closed. If it were going to be a YES, they could have left the polls open and let Charles pay for it. This isn’t the end, just one more wasted step.

I see.

I guess thwarting every conceivable option for him to viably stay in the area over the past 10 years was a warm token of the community’s affection.

My mistake.

Beginning to think Aug 1st was bad for the YES vote

Will start by saying that there was no way this was gonna pass. The voters have spoken. But a fair amount of Hofstra/Nassau/Adelphi students, that would likely vote yes, are away for the Summer. And as to vacationers, many are families with young children, and I believe more likely to vote yes.

Geez, 66,000 is 4 sellouts of the building. I realize our attendance is terrible, but are we really pulling from a pool of only 66k residents in Nassau?

So what happens now? I sat helplessly here in Pa. only to see failure. I agree with many of the previous post about Mr Wang getting it in the rear. He has shown how dedicated he is to making this team a success. Yes he is a business man and he wants to make money, but he’s a team owner that is liked by the fans. We’ve had our fair share of evil, self serving owners. And don’t get me started on the politics. Elected officials are supposed to speak for the people. Not push for their own personal agendas. I can only hope the team stays somewhere in the region. Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens maybe. Now that my kids have become NYI fans, I’d like to know there will be a place to take them for many years to come.

An ode for the banking community

Well – Charles is it really over?
should the team really call a mover?

First Kate Murray said NO!
and now the voters say GO!

But I have an idea for a do over.

The deal you proposed was really great
even though the voters didn’t take the bait

Have the Banks deal directly with you
the money is there for a great coup

Then a private deal will be our new fate!

If the Isles look towards Suffolk

I don’t know how ready the old Pilgrim Psych site is for a new arena, but I’m informed that they do have an abandoned rail station, so mass transit infrastructure may already be in place. It’s a good thing to have transportation historians amongst your friends.

"Tonight is not the ending. It is the beginning"

Beginning of the End – Nine Inch Nails should be the Islanders new goal song if they turn town Burn it Down by AWOL Nation. Just think of how funny it would be to invite Jay Jacobs and Kate Murray to opening night and watch their faces as they hear this as the new goal song. That would be worth at least $150 seats.

If you don't vote yes on August 1st I will personally make sure that Jay Jacobs comes to your house and tell you how he is going to convince Wang to stay in Nassau County. You get to clean up after the unicorns...

Not sure if this has been brought up...

but i think it was unfair that the vote, and the entire decision was left up to nassau county. I know that it is the “nassau” coliseum and the burden would have been placed on nassau residents, but to me, that is where the initial problem was.. If anyone lives on long island they know that the coliseum is maybe 10 miles from the nassau/suffolk border. The crowd at islander games and coliseum events, I would imagine, is AT LEAST 20% suffolk county residents. I dont know if it would’ve been possible, but this vote should have been up to Long Island. I live about a mile from the border, and could not vote. The entire process, and now the result is just frustrating.

by Born4Goal on Aug 2, 2011 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

Then you would have had to

get Suffolk and or Queens to pay in also and revenue share. They can’t have a say if they’re not paying…that would be outrageous unless it was done at the state level (which would never happen because it’s county land).

I was thinking the same thing when hearing that 40% of the fans live outside of Nassau.

Drawing in revenue
40% of the fans live outside of Nassau

Which is why it was patently stupid to say that people would just spend their money on some other form of entertainment and the tax implications of the stadium are a wash. They failed to recognize that the Coliseum, as run down ghetto as it and its environs may be, draws much needed revenue from out of the county into it. People are not looking for ways to spend money in Nassau county.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
