Hmm..

Thanks Hradek. I guess. I prefer the team gets little respect from the pr*j*c*t*rs because the surprise is so much sweeter when these people look foolish.

indeed

Its so much easier and popular to say that the Isles aren’t good enough to compete in the east…Other teams supposedly got better and the Isles did not…But I would beg to differ…We have Streit coming back and a full year of KO, hopefully…I think these 2 are our best additions for this season…What team wouldn’t want to add KO and Streit?Reasoner and Rolston will help too…We have offense…We could use another BIG dman but maybe we can due with what we have as long as we’re not devastated by injuries AGAIN!!!

I wonder why there is no investigative coverage on the Isles injury situation….Its been several years in a row where we have been literally devastated by injuries…Its been several years where we’ve has record amounts of man games lost to injury…Why is this?I hope they address this instead of sweeping it under the rug…Its time to look in the mirror ask themselves, “what is the reason for all of these injuries”???

there are those who think the move to seamless glass played a role

less give, etc. i do believe these are to be phased out but someone else may know more than i on this one. another factor, or possibility is icing a team of small to average sized players.

Why would they produce a video saying the Isles will not make the playoffs???

If they are saying thats their goal???I just find it very odd…I dont like it!

by KO21 on Aug 19, 2011 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

NHL produced it

And the Islanders share/swap content with nhl.com.

Honestly, the willingness to post a neutral’s reasoned take is refreshing. It’s too easy to deliver only straight-up PR.

Fair assessment

EJ has it right. They are still extremely young and will compete, but they have way too many questions to say they will definitely make the playoffs.
I don’t like the idea of them being one of the ten teams that will definitely be shut out, because that way of thinking by the hockey media is just lazy. This team pr*j*cts to a 7-10th place finish in the conference. Their high end is probably depends more on the quality of play of their division foes than it does their own.
Questions:
1. (I will lump these together) Health of returning defensemen. Streit, MacDonald, Eaton (and even Mottau) should play a role if this is going to be a playoff team. Streit, MacDonald and Eaton will have to play big minutes for them to see the 7th spot… or they will need premature contributions from deHaan or Donovan.
2. Is Kyle Okposo ready to step up to the next level. The 7th pick of the 2006 draft is now 13th among those draftees in scoring. He is 14th in goals. Those are respectable numbers amongst his peers, but he needs to be a bigger factor on the team. I expect that he may find a more defensive role this year, going back to being one of hte main PKers, and maybe even dropping off the PP until he can show more NET PRESENSE. He is also coming off an injury shortened season. If Kyle has a breakout season with his new linemates he could add to a very strong lineup.
3. Matt Moulson. Will his magic mirror finally break? Some of us said this last year, and he came through like a champ. But if you don’t improve your competition will surpass you. Tavares has some upside, but if Parentau remains on the RW on the first line they will be shut down more often. This is not a knock on Matty, but teams are going to start beating up on that line again unless there is somebody on the ice to protect them. That somebody needs to be a redefined KO (our new Tonelli?), Matt Martin(not sure he’s ready for that job FT, but definitely PT), or eventually Nino(and that’s why the “not yet” is there).
4. Maybe the biggest question…. GOALTENDING. This community has talked about it since 2008. They need a #1 goaltender. They’ll have 3 candidates in camp, and maybe one or two more as the season progresses… but any team that is looking to their number 5 before the season starts as a potential #1 has HUGE question marks in the crease.
5. Coaching staff. I’m a big fan of THE CAP, but he has yet to run the gauntlet. I think he will do just fine. He did take a team in dire need of a change and turn them around last year. But now he’ll need to keep that team focused and motivated without such drastic change being available. He’ll have a few tools that his predecessors haven’t had in a decade. Those include DEPTH, YOUTH, and a team that has already shown they will stand up for each other.
Whether they make the playoffs or not this should be a great year to be an Islander fan! I’m looking forward to some very entertaining hockey.

Towards the end of the year KO was crashing the net...

I just hope that they play the best goalie who gives us the best shot at winning instead of injecting DP just because….

Earth to E.J., Come Back!

He’s really out there on this one. Tavares, Okposo and Grabner “not ready” to “step up for a playoff run”? Huh? These guys have already shown what they can do.

If the Islanders don’t make the playoffs it’ll be because their defense and goaltending don’t improve. It won’t be because JT, Okposo and Grabner are “not ready.”

I absolutely agree with you.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
