News out of Washington
So former Capital Michael Bradley, now with the Panthers, was quoted in an interview saying that some players seemed to have problems with Alexander Semin's attitude during the playoffs and felt like "he didnt care". This type of attention for Semin and the fact that players in the Washington locker room feel this way could be more fuel that gets him traded away. Here's a link from espn.:

Now its time to play Garth Snow....For a guy like Semin, what would you give up?
Bailey, 1st-Rd pick, and perhaps another prospect for Semin would work. If the price is a bit steep, maybe we can get a big Dman like Erskine or Schultz considering they signed Wideman and Hamrlik this offseason.
What would you guys give up for a guy like him?

The Isles have a player like that.
Big-time flashy Russian player ? Awesome in spurts, but lots of defensive holes? Cited repeatedly for lack of heart or even not caring? Yeah, he’s getting 2 mil a year to stay away. His name is Alexi Yashin.
The Isles have too many good players who care about winning, who want to be there to really turn this franchise around to want to have a cancer like that on the team.
Give me a Frans Nielsen, Michael Grabner or Kyle Okposo over a Alex Semin any day.
You know you're an Islanders fan when you hit refresh on LHH 12 times a day. In summer.
For a guy who doesnt care
I wouldnt go near him. You never know if hes going to show up or not, so why give up a lot to get him? Even if he helped us into the playoffs, would he just disappear like the past few years?
The disappearing in the playoffs thing is a bit unfair. He was great in 2008 vs Philadelphia, 2009 vs NYR, and 2011 vs NYR. He was poor vs Pittsburgh in 2009, but also had hand injuries that made it tough to handle the puck. Essentially his one inexcusable time he failed to produce was against Montreal in 2010.

I always heard about his pointless streak in the playoffs
I just assumed he wasnt a good playoff performer
His resume goes something like 4-4-8 vs PHI, 5-6-11 vs NYR, 0-6-6 vs PIT, 0-2-2 vs MTL, 3-0-3 vs NYR, 0-1-1 vs TBL. The first four were seven gamers, the last two five and four games respectively.

So....
31 points in 37 games?
So we’d complain about this production, why?
Keeping in mind that in order to have that production in the Playoffs, we’d have to actually GET to the Playoffs and he’d help out immeasurably at that?
Not dismissing the idea any more….

Inconsistency and injury prone. He’s also an expensive second line wing for a team like Washington.

A little bit more definition on the stat lines
He’s a point per game player, but when did he rack up those points. He had a couple of games where he put up the points and then shoots from the blueline the rest of the series. He is just so damn streaky and his talents require the coach to risk so many minutes on him, that he winds up hurting the team.
A huge function of the coach is to make in-game decisions, which doesn’t seem to be BB’s strength down in DC. He kept going to the well with the same horses even if they refused to drink. The reality is, Semin would certainly help the Islanders make the playoffs, once we’re in, we may be on our own.
Nassau Coliseum lost a veteran and an original Islander fan. ACC 1918-2011
In his productive series, he was pretty consistently good, though should be noted in 2008 and 2009 Boudreau ended up playing Ovechkin with Fedorov and Semin with Backstrom. Against Montreal he had Fleischmann as his center. Also worth noting that the Blueline wrist shot theory is false. Numbers show a decrease in avg shot distance in the playoffs compared to regular season, and if nothing else he was on ice for something like one goal against while frequently seeing Gomez and Plekanec.

There are compelling reasons to go for a talent like that, if on a discount
However, there are also flashing-red-light signals that whatever character/effort issues he has on a Stanley Cup contender, they would only be Muller times worse if he woke up one day to find himself on the Russian-less Isles.
I can’t see it working, not now.

Smells like Kovalev
Stay away, unless he comes with Green or Schultz or Alzner for the same price!

Contrarian Take
How would a line like – Moulson – Tavares and Semin look to you guys? Semin scores a goal every .45 games or averages over 30+ goals a season. We could have a line of 30 goal scores followed by speed demons followed by two lines of opportunistic scorers.
The top line would play critical offensive minutes and let the two middle lines play defense and score.
Just a thought?
But I agree the price must be right.
Uh...
wouldn’t that mean Semin scores 160 goals a year? Obviously I think you meant he scores .45 goals per game, no?
Official choice of Lighthouse Dog #1.
i don't know

Honestly, I just think it would be great fun for brief moments but ultimately end badly.

I've said before
I’d have no problem adding Semin as a rental for this year. And that is what he’d be. I harbor no fantasies that we’d be able to resign him at year’s end.
But I think he could threaten for 50 on our top line and in the process put us over in our to make the playoffs. I think he’d be plenty motivated going into his UFA year.
But given that he’d be a rental, I wouldn’t give up much. No blue chip prospects. Something along the lines of a first and a second, and second tier prospect or two. I realize this probably wouldn’t be enough, but if it was I’d love to see the Isles pull it off. I think finally getting back into the playoffs for the fans and getting our young guys the experience would be well worth it.
That's probably the best way to look at it
Although if Washington has him all year long, they’d demand a hefty price to part with him as a rental just when his lightning in a bottle just might come in handy.
Lighthouse Hockey: A flute with no holes is not a flute. A Dane with no holes is Frans Nielsen.
Yea
We’d need to have him before the season started, or by the end of the calendar year to make it worthwhile really. I don’t think they should chase him as a short-term trade deadline rental. We don’t really have enough veterans that could gel with him quickly enough.
And who'd be so completly certain that he couldn't be convinced to sign on long term?
We’d be less likely to be “Russianless” as someone put it above, since we’d have Kabanov and hopefully Petrov coming aboard in the next couple of years.
If Kabanov or Semin can play center we could have our own Red Army Line of Kabanov-Semin-Petrov.

I'm actually...
pretty excited about that prospect. He is in no way, shape or form Yashin. For one thing, he’s a much better skater.
His playoff draughts had as much to do w/ injuries as anything and yes, as was mentioned, you have to get to the playoffs to worry about the other stuff.
As for messing with the core…I get it, already. But at some point the front office has to go out on a bit of a limb and say ‘what the f***’. Give it a shot already. It’s been what, 4 years since the Ryan Smyth trial run? And Smyth ostensibly helped that team get into the playoffs (and also commented on our former Russian’s tendancy to disappear for long stretches on the ice for which we should still be sending him thank you cards)…
However, Bailey and a 1 and a 2 will NOT get that done, in my humble opinion.
Okay, someone wanna help me down off my soap box now?
Well, if you wanna make the argument that we will need to make a move eventually to put us over the top, it's not time yet.
What do we, trade for Semin so we are a playoff team? That would be a gigantic waste, what are we the Rangers? If we are trading prospects/players for that 1 missing piece it should be to make us a “cup contender”, not a playoff contender. Say, 2-3yrs down the line we will need to make that move to do that, but not right now. Not just to make the playoffs and for a 1yr rental.
i'd have to agree, to make a "smyth" like move now would put Isles closer to the playoffs, further from the cup
we don’t yet know whether that final piece will be a number one D man, or a gillies/nystrom winger…if the unexpected (which always happens through the course of a season) happens and an offer that can’t be refused comes by – makes Isles better now and in future – you take it, otherwise, you have to stick with developing the youth…ufa’s are always over priced therefore rendering it necessary to develop lots of depth just to have a chance, can’t just ship it (youth depth) off for one year in the playoffs and a prayer said player will resign and stay.

Well
I don’t know about that. Smyth didn’t really cost us anything in the end. So if we got Semin for a bunch of guys that we didn’t think would pan out, then I’m all for it.
They have to be 2 1st rounders we don't think would pan out and 1 future 1st round pick. Would you wanna do that?
That’s would be similar to Bailey + DeHaan/Nino/Okposo + next year’s 1st rounder for 1yr of Semin, would you really do that just for 1 playoffs run and the loss of a DeHaan or a Nino or an Okposo? That’s gonna be the cost.
Well said Ozzy, NO Thanks, way to much for possibly one year
In loving memory;Dad thanks for making us Islanders fans, ACC 1918-2011
Well
I guess we don’t really have anyone comparable right now. I’m not sure Nilsson or O’Marra were ever as highly thought of as the guys you mention, especially by the time they were traded. Bailey’s already had a better NHL career than either of them.

That's not fair at all to consider them as "lowly thought" prospects before they were traded.
O’marra was a PPG+ center in the OHL when he was traded and is above-average sized. While Nilsson looked capable of a 3rd line role in his short stint in the NHL, he was also ~a PPG player in the ahl, and looked like a future middle 6er(whether it be at wing or center). Nilsson had his problems with the oilers, but he stilled looked capable of being a 50pts forward if on the right team. They are actually more comparable to Nino/DeHaan at the time of the trade then you think, and Bailey obviously(Okposo is more of a stretch). And it would cost us a similar value to Bailey + Nino/DeHaan/Okposo + a 1st rounder to acquire Semin.
Maybe
but they were both #15 picks, and O’Marra’s class was pretty weak. All the guys now were top 10 excepting de Haan.
For what it’s worth, you’re probably right because Semin is a much better player than Smyth.
Obviously Garth didnt think all that much of them.
Which is a good thing, in retrospect.

by TheMetalChick on Aug 23, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions
That depends on how well Garth thought his chances of resigning Smyth were and if he thought it was time to make a big move for the best of the team.
Team’s move good prospects a decent amount of times to acquire big names on their last contract year before entering UFA.
Now wait just a second
His playoff draughts
Are you saying he was drinking during the playoffs? Because that’s a serious allegation.

With all the negative publicity surrounding Semin...
I doubt it would cost a 1st, 2nd, and a prospect at the deadline, unless Semin is playing really well. And, in that case, why would Caps trade him?
Isles will have plenty of scoring. If they add a rental forward at the deadline, add a power forward who is not a defensive liability.
