New York Islanders 2011-12 Training Camp Dates, Rookie Roster

Yeah, well, like, none of you can skate as fast as Michael Grabner, so, you know, just give up, man.

The New York Islanders announced the dates, time slots and rookie invitees for September's training camp, so plan your sick days and dental appointments lunch breaks accordingly. The rookie camp begins the week prior, on Sept. 10.

Sept. 12-13 will feature two rookie squad games vs. the Bruins at Nassau [gloriously unsponsored] Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m., but only the Tuesday, Sept. 13 game is open to the public. Season ticket holders get free admission to that one, while the general public will be charged a $10 donation to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.

The full schedule and the invitees for that rookie camp are reposted below. Obviously that means rookie pros and juniors, so NCAA "amateurs, Dude" like Anders Lee and Brock Nelson won't be there. No, not Cody Rosen either.

Star-divide

But the rest of the rookie roster is chock-full of the prospect pipeline and recent AHL free agent additions. The battle will be on.

The Islanders also added that beginning Saturday, Sept. 17, the full training camp roster will split into two squads and on-ice sessions will take place between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. It's not specified in the release which, if any, of those sessions will be open to the public. But it's a good bet you will not be able to view player physicals, nor commercial video shoots of strapping young bodies in chains. Sorry.

I have to say

Thats a good looking rookie line up, even if we are missing Lee, Nelson, Mayfield, Russo, Trivino, Clark, and of course Rosen.

So lets try and work this out here.

Kabonov – Strome – Nino
Dibo – Ullstrom – Rhett
McNeely – Cizikas – Gallant
Persson – Romano – Theoret

then

Donovan – De Haan
Katic – Ness/Pedan
Pedan/Klementyev – Kitchton

The rest

Looking forward, each day passes by and we are closer to training camp and then opening night.

free

I knew buying season tickets would have some benefits, free tickets to this and to the prospect scrimmage and that stupid lounge at the draft party that I didn’t bother going to.

Is he going to SEL camp

Or maybe because he is making the SWE WJC team? That sucks though. I was looking forward to him after his dominance in whatever that was he recently played in. (development camp?)

Yeah, the way I've read things

Nilsson IS going to be in North America this season. Probably BPT, hopefully not ECHL

Whichever one of the goalies in the goalie abundance that is the Islanders organization who DOES go to the ECHL is going to get a lot more playing time.

My first guess is Mikko, but my second guess is Nilsson.

wait, how are we going to get everyone playing time?

montoya, dp, nabo, poulin, mikko, nilsson

So we hope that nabo gets traded and dp does his annual injury early?

So we hope that nabo gets traded and dp does his annual injury early?

Thats definitely who I hope is traded.
Even with him traded, theres still an abundance of goalies.
As far as hoping for injuries, I know you are of course joking but… ugh.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

by TheMetalChick on Aug 16, 2011 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess there is another way of looking at it:

1) Our injury history is a trend and we are pretty much guaranteed of having 1 or 2 goalies going down for a significant time with boo-boos.

B) Regression to the mean and all 6 goalies are insanely healthy and pout about their playtime-share.

At the very least, as we scratch our heads over who plays where and for how much, we can be confident of NHL and prospect depth between the pipes…and Cody Rosen.

"..."

by Thaddeus Ballpheasant on Aug 16, 2011 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Folks....abundance of goalies? Really?

Les’t we forget, last year we used how many? 6 or 7? I can’t remember. Motto of this story: you can never have enough goalies.

We are all Islanders, even if we’re from Jersey!

by Russel Ginart on Aug 16, 2011 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Going through 6-7 goalies in a season

is an anomaly and not the norm.

Most teams only use 2-3 over the course of a season (and in most cases that 3rd guy makes very minimal appearances). Only these teams used more: TB 4, Detroit 4 (4th appeared for 15 minutes), Ducks 5 (5th guy appeared for 40 minutes), and Ottawa 6. In Ottawa’s case, Brian Elliot and Craig Anderson were traded for each other and McElhinney was a waiver addition.

If you are going to go through 6 goalies, you will most likely do so with some guys outside of your system.

by Thaddeus Ballpheasant on Aug 17, 2011 5:01 AM EDT up reply actions

It may be an anomaly BUT...

RDP, coming off injury plagued season
Montoya comes off surgery
Koskinen coming off surgery
Poulin coming off surgery
We are not out of the woods yet!

This is exactly how I hope it shakes out

With one of KP MK or AN making a quantum leap to stardom. Also, perhaps a retirement.

I don't think we'll see any more chains

…after Bailey’s performance last season. No offense to Josh. He did actually play a little better defensively, I think.

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Aug 16, 2011 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Bailey was great after his yo-yo into the AHL

so he clearly needs a jolt of confidence every so often. We should hire a team of kids to play with/against Bails when he appears to be drooping.

I love imagining NHLers bodychecking the crap out of children.

The KHL season starts the first week of September.

He’s under contract with AK Bars for another year plus family issues. I highly doubt he makes it to Long Island this year.

Wow, looking at that roster...

…I can see two things:

1. That assessment of the Isles having the 2nd best horde of prospects looks accurate, if not arguable that perhaps they should be ranked #1.

2. The future looks bright. Somebody hand me my shades…

Jeff Carter to Columbus? Wait, I've seen this one before, it was called Shanahan to Hartford. Advice? Don't buy a Carter jersey.

So might Montoya.
Hell, so might Mikko.
I love having those kinds of possibilities.

Hear you Lakewood but I'm with TMC on this one

my gut feeling is Mikko becomes a very good backup, like Rollie Melanson, and if Poulin’s knees hold up, he will be a consistent top 8 NHL goalie. Nilsson has serious potential as well, incase Poulin’s health fails…not sold on Montoya yet but open…wouldn’t be the first time…

but yes, forward prospects are much deeper. Being an Isles fan is going to be fun watching these kids break into the league and fight each other for jobs…

Because all of your points bring up the same point, I’ll just address them all in one bite:

If these guys all pan out, and we have depth like that, we’re going to be were we were in 1979: Prime shape to wheel and deal and put the final pieces into place.

Better still is Garth’s penchant for getting picks in his deals, thus, keeping the pantry stocked with more prospects going forward, even after (best case scenario) we start picking at the back end of the draft rounds.

That revelation has just melted my shades.

Better get a welder’s shield.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
