And a small tribute to the blue collar breakable man. Thanks for the quiet hard work Radek. You will be missed! He's getting paid too!

Good Luck Marty

Unfortunately I knew once July 3rd hit and there was no news, that Radek would not be re-signed. It’s a shame bc I really would have loved to see him share in a few winning seasons here on the Island. He busted his ass here and is one player that you could never deny bled orange and blue. Best of luck in Columbus.

Top 4 Guy?

CBJ thinks so. He’ll be paired with Methot on the second pair (link).

Options Anyone

I guess Snow isn’t adding anyone via FA. Shame because we could use some additional talent at wing and defense. I hope if he does trade he doesn’t give up much.

Good luck Radek……

The problem is

there really isn’t any talent left at either of those positions on the free agent market. Not any worth the price tag at least.

Andrej Sekera is a possibility

from Buffalo. He’s an RFA who’s 25 and played top 4 minutes last year. He made $1.25M last year and is going to arbitration. Buffalo though is right up against the cap and have 6 defensemen under contract already. He could probably be had for a mid round pick, but you’d have to work out a contract. I checked out his stats from behindthenet here and he was 2nd on the team in Corsi Rel QoC. If you could work out a decent contract, prob in the neighborhood of $3M per, would you take him? It’s a question worth asking I think and a possibility at least.

I should add

that I think Buffalo would love to keep him and I don’t know if they could dump salary from other places, but maybe they have no choice.

Best of luck to Martinek.

Shame he wasn’t more durable and underrated because of it, but alwasy a class act. I’d rather have kept him as our fifth defender than some of the guys we have currently signed, but the writing was on the well. How long before he passes the Wiz on the CBJ depth chart? Here’s hoping he laps the rink in Columbus for his first star of the game!

What a joke of a franchise

to let the steady Czech walk away for nothing…no wonder they’re 10 points ahead of the Jackets constantly a laughing stock.

I'm surprised he wants another season

I figured he would prefer a lighter European schedule at his age and with his injury history.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

…than see him in a BJ uni. I’m afraid the West may break him.

Maybe a lot of BJ fans are delusional...this is the exact sequence from my posting over there

Also

He was really good at shutting down high end guys like Ovechkin for some reason. If he can stay healthy (he can’t) he will be worth every penny…Even if you get 60 games out of him, with some of the depth you have now, he will be good. I posted a fanshot for you on him also if you want to look at that.

I thought that

and then I saw the “heavy soviet” screen name, and seriously, I wonder if some words just don’t translate…like did he mean “reliable” and durable is all that comes close in Russian. Instead of google translate, I wish there was a sight like “whats the (language) word for (word)” where it would spit out the closest thing.

Indeed, this is the case.

There’s a word in a Russian language that when translated into English can mean both “reliability” and “durability” (depending on the context, of course).

Overreaction to the Witt contract???

Perhaps Garthie is overcompensating for the bad experience he had with carrying Witt for 2 years too many??

Streit – Jurcina
AMac – Hamonic
Eaton – Mottau

With the possibility of us carrying both De Haan and Wishart for the regular season, and Reese/Katic as 9/10 on the farm.

Would have much preferred Martinek/Hillen to Mottau/Reese/Katic.

I’m truly worried if Jurcina carries 1st pairing minutes as well. I would have like
Streit – Eaton
AMAC – Hamonic
MArtinek – Hillen

Wishart for the injuries, but that’s spilled milk.

Is Eaton capable of those minutes either?

I had never really thought about that, but ice-time capability may throw more of a wrench into the works than the “name” on the jersey. You may see Streit/Wishart Amac/Ham and Eaton/Jurcina if you go that way. With the first two pairings having similar ice time until they get their post-injury legs back.

I just think Streit Eaton make a better pairing skill wise.

I never bought into Streit – Wiz, because that meant Streit would have to babysit in the defensive zone and wait a week for Wiz to wind up on the PP and never be able to quarteback.

If you dress seven (which is rare) you can have Wishart/hillen spot Eaton shifts where you need more offense.

by Hockey1919 on Jul 6, 2011 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

No I hear you skill wise

but do you think Eaton’s capable of 27 minutes? I mean, can you keep a pair together if your going to have to sub a different guy in for 5-10 minutes a game?

That will be interesting to watch evolve…maybe Eaton is good to go…that would be the best case scenario.

27 minutes

Well, I look at it like this: Streit shouldn’t play 27 minutes but when he does it’s with a lot of PP time, which Eaton won’t be a part of.

Granted, Eaton will make some of that back on the PK, but overall Eaton’s game is somewhat energy conservative: He doesn’t hit a lot, doesn’t rush and wander a lot … so maybe his stay-at-homey, homey jib frees up the offensive rushing part of Streit’s jab.

Or maybe A-Mac goes back with Streit.

by Dominik on Jul 6, 2011 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Or

I like the idea of Hamonic with Streit. Actually frees Streit up to do a little more. And then Amac can cover Jurcina’s, ahem, weaknesses. And Eaton can (hopefully) mentor Wishart or de Haan, or hold it down with Mottau.

I know people loved the Amac/Hamonic combo last year (I did as well), but I think we could be better overall splitting them up.

by afrosupreme on Jul 6, 2011 8:54 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It's gonna be awesome if in a couple of years

Nobody has to babysit anybody and you could just throw the best pairings out without having to worry about one pairing being decidedly weak. I’m hoping either deHaan, Donovan, or Wishart make that decision happen much sooner. (Like in October).

The idea of "pairings" is a little misleading

There are ideal pairings, but game situations dictate guys playing with multiple partners per game. Dominilks argument about PP time versus PK time pretty much re-enforces this point.

For example, I don’t think Jurcina is great defensively, but he may be their best PK defender on the 5-on-3.

yeah, negativity and Garth/Wang bashing is the norm on IPB...

The thing that sucks about that is they all feed into each other with the bashing…It can kind of make you think negatively if you allow yourself to be swayed…Its the exact opposite over here…Why is it that we are so much more optimistic here in LHH? You rarely see anyone bashing the team…There’s plenty of criticisms but its not in a hateful anti-Garth/Wang way…Could it be mostly because these people are Botta fans who hate Garth for the cred situation? Is much of it spurred from Bottas creds being revoked by Garth and the fact that NY writers boycotted the vote for the awards?Who knows?

by KO21 on Jul 7, 2011 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

the difference between hatred and criticism

I don’t bash the team just to vent my anger, I try to be constructive and think of ways that the team can reasonably improve and evaluate the moves in the context that they are being made.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
