Bits: Renderings and Electioneering

Arena Rendering Courtesy of the NY Islanders team site.

[Updated with more of the same on the arena at 07/31/11 3:02 PM EDT ]

The rendering; she's a lovely beast isn't she Nassau?  It looks like it's us against the world folks.  If we come, they may build it.

Strangely enough, there continues to be opposition in the form of semi-local sports writers who  are against the arena referendum for the Islanders.  George Vecsey seems to think the "figures seem suspect" and basically that we'd all just become Ranger or Devil fans or something [NY Times] and Larry Brooks (oh Brooksie) makes this claim [NY Post]:

Brooklyn residents in the 1950s probably would have killed for the right to spend the adjusted equivalent of $100 or so a year — that’s what it may amount to for each Nassau County household — to have kept the Dodgers in Flatbush.

Alan Hahn, the former Islander beat writer prior to Greg Logan, who gave way to Katie Strang, took to twitter this week to voice his disapproval of the arena plan on the grounds of Nassau maintaining control of the property.  Which is probably correct, it's just that hey, options are in short supply right now.  After the jump, some appropriate Nassau County political music and a couple of links.

Not much, I think

The Mets haven’t been perennial contenders in a very long time. The Jets haven’t won a Super Bowl in 42 yrs. Does that mean they should go?!

No offense to either team (I happen to be a Jets fan, too), but their records over the same time frame aren’t exactly spectacular, even with the Jets’ current resurgence. But if either of them were in the same boat as the Islanders, I know the media coverage would be quite different.

I'm not entirely certain ...

I would have phrased it in Pretty Good Idiot’s particular verbiage, but good for you! I too resent Johnny-come-lately entries inserting themselves into the debate and voicing less than fully informed opinions from self-important media platforms. That goes for everyone from The Schmoozer on The Fan, who I often get a kick out of, and whose heart and mind I think are usually think in the right place, to the Pulitzer prize winning Vescey, who should know better than to come out one day before the vote with a half-ass slam job.

Meanwhile, I just read today’s piece by another sports “journalist” (whatever that’s worth), Larry Brooks, and if he’s not full of drek and a Barclay’s "arena/Nets rep" did seemingly go out of his or her way to tell him the arena will accommodate NHL hockey after all, then that is news. Possibly huge news.

And finished works don’t often resemble the artists’ renderings they promote, but this depiction does look pretty cool.

As mentor

Prokorov>Yashin. If this is the “worst case scenario”, it’s really not too bad. I wonder if CW would sell outright or just try to buy into a partnership with the arena.

You know what may make sense. Any arena’s naming rights should be NeuLion arena right? That’s probably an advertising writeoff for the company, a source of revenue for the team, and help to pay off the debt service all at once.

A Wang/Rat/Prokhorov ...

partnership appeared to be a possibility until about a year ago, but then seemed to get shut down entirely. This clearly contradicts that. And of course, as someone who pretty much grew up in the Coliseum watching the Dr. J/Mr. K Nets and the Craig Cameron/Billy Harris Islanders, and would be able to walk in 5 minutes to see both teams again after all these years, I’m thinking Holy Moly!

The stuff I heard and read ...

most recently was all in the negative, that Barclay’s Center would accomodate ice-shows (ie. Sasha Cohen !!!!!!!!) but not an NHL rink, and that Prokhorov wanted no part of the Islanders or hockey. If Brooks’s account is legitimate, it turns all of that completely around.

I also remember this.

I believe it was when he got the approval to buy the team and then was asked the question in a interview with Francesa. He said that he doesn’t follow hockey and was not interested in buying the Islanders.

by Shane72 on Jul 31, 2011 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

So now here's the big question

Aren’t most ice shows on a full size rink? Meaning that they are practiced an choreographed for at least NHL sized if not Olympic?

Now keeping that in mind, they would either have to remove seats for that too or use a smaller ice surface (which I doubt). I wonder if they are just keeping it quiet because it was a backup plan all along. It seems stupid to not make something multi-purpose like that.

It's Amazing That No One Can Settle The Barclay's Issue

I skimmed Loser Larry’s column today, as I usually do, since it’s always full of nonsense lacking any new information. But I had to stop and read that sentence twice about him calling the Nets to confirm the Barclay Center’s ability to accommodate hockey.

Can somebody in the press – hello Katie Strang! – please get someone to go on the record (or request and look at the plans) to confirm one way or another whether the building can host NHL hockey? That’s a pretty simple question to answer, right? It either does or doesn’t. You’d think people would want to know.

Exactly

And even if Prokhorov isn’t a big hockey fan, I’m sure he’s open to making more money anyway. Whether Wang just occupies the arena or Prokhorov buys the team, there will be some way for that arena to fit in a hockey team if they’re going to promote on-ice events anyway.

If you type in this "Barclay Center’s ability to accommodate hockey"

You come to many different ideas on the subject
From what was written, it would be possible but seats would have to be removed.
Going from 18K to somewhere around 16 and change
Wikipedia on the Barclay Center says NO
Other sites say YES

Can’t imagine they would build without it being possible

Hockey + basketball + biggest concert venue in Brooklyn

means that the Barclays Center could be busy maybe 200 or 250 days out of the year. It would be really hard for Prokhorov to turn that down, in my opinion.

Brooks wrote ...

“I was corrected this week by an arena/Nets representative who informed me that Barclay’s … .” To me, the way he worded this suggests it was Brooks who was the one contacted, not the other way around. That’s how it strikes me anyway, and if that is correct, it’s a lot more significant.

by dose on Jul 31, 2011 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, it can

On NetsDaily, the SB Nation blog for the Nets, they’ve been debating his for months. As part of a phase reducing the overall size and capacity of the Barclays Center in 2009, the official line has been that the arena can accommodate ice events but not hockey at the pro level—college, but not AHL/NHL. Apparently the seating arrangement for hockey is 14,500, which is super small for a pro team and 2,000 seats less than the Coliseum, and with poor sight lines.

BUT, the main NetsDaily writer, with high Nets/Prokhorov contacts, confirmed yesterday that Barclays would be able to host pro hockey events. So the ownership/management is receptive, so they could find a way even if details were not given and nobody was on the record for it.

Check out the the most recent thread on this at: http://www.netsdaily.com/2011/7/31/2306994/hockey-in-brooklyn-spurred-by-monday-vote-but-impediments-remain

It just makes sense

How can a business man spend millions on a new arena and not make it big enough to accomadate NHL hockey? That would be a tremendous lack of vision.

by NHL fan on Aug 1, 2011 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

It had to do with getting approval to build the place

There was a serious fight going on years ago in order to get the place built, so they kept arena at 16,000+ just to get approval. If they went any higher (and had it sighted and zoned for NHL hockey as well), the arena probably wouldn’t have gotten approval.

Official choice of Lighthouse Dog #1.

by Fabtraption on Aug 1, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely true

Not to mention that Proky is on record saying that he doesn’t want to own any more sports teams until the Nets have been successful. He’s apparently been approached to buy the Devils and said no, and he has repeatedly said that he isn’t interested in the Islanders. I wouldn’t count it out longterm, as Proky’s a big sportsfan and benefactor of Russian sports…and the NHL would seem to be a logical next step for him.

Barclays has already lined up an impressive array of events for next year, and so it may not need hockey also after tennis, boxing, pop music concerts, BAM concerts, etc.

The roof

I honestly have zero opinion, as it just looks like any ol’ shiny new building rendering. I miss the old barns (can you tell?), as new buildings … they’ve got flash but it’s hard to do character. Admittedly the exterior of the current Coliseum is about as characterless as you can get, but…

In the new areeners I’ve been in, the more glass like that that’s open to an atrium/concourses, the better. Beyond that, they all feel like large hallways with escalators and sushi concession stands that let you get to your seats a lot quicker than before — assuming you can find the peasant section in between special luxury suite floors.

(Wow, that sounds like I’m really anti-arena, but obviously I’m not. I’m just unmoved by new areeners I’ve been in and am not expecting to be inspired. I also don’t know the first thing about architecture.)

Alan Hahn, the former Islander beat writer prior to Katie Strang took to twitter this week to voice his disapproval of the arena plan on the grounds of Nassau maintaining control of the property. Which is probably correct, it’s just that hey, options are in short supply right now. After the jump, some appropriate Nassau County political music and a couple of links.

Kate took over for Greg Logan, Alan was before that.

I was actually talking to him privately a bit on Twitter. It was a strange thing- he followed me to PM me, then un-followed me after the PMs. But what he said was NOT all negative against this. What he said was that he thinks Charles and the Islanders NEED to be the ones in complete control of the building, or else we will have the same problems we had with NVMC. He said if Charles WAS in charge of the entire bldg, it would change his mind. I responded to him that the vote is the beginning- the vote is to even do this in the first place. If we dont do it, then there will be nothing for anyone to be in control OF.

Yeah this has really been a big issue for me

Back when Milbury was in charge, I knew that if the Islanders moved and became another team, I would have an extremely difficult time rooting for them. But I’m really liking what Garth and Charles have been building with this team, and I love hockey too much to NOT watch.

I have a friend at work who was a big Whalers fan before they moved

Now he roots for the Caps and Red Wings for reasons unknown. He still wears his Whalers hat (as do I mine in the winter), and he’s as a very knowledgeable hockey fan. But he’d rather not watch hockey at all than watch the Hurricanes.

I’d rather not think about it now, but I’d probably still root for the Islanders wherever they were. The circumstances between the Whale leaving Hartford and this are far different.

That being said, if I had to jump on another team’s bandwagon, it’d probably be the Sabres. New York team that at least plays in a different division. Living in NJ and watching a lot of Devils games, I feel like I already sorta root for them as long as they’re not playing the Islanders. I respect the way Lou runs a tight ship. But I don’t think I could make the full time switch.

The Rangers are not an option. You have to pick one or the other and I made my pick 30 years ago. No backsies.

Yeah, probably Buffalo

After some time, anyway. There’d be some withdrawal, maybe a season without rooting for any team, but at some point I’d have to latch on to someone. Lots of respect for the Devils, but…not sure I could jump in on that. Otherwise? Can’t pull for other Atlantic teams

I don’t see how people could vote no tomorrow. I mean Wang tried to privately fund an extravagant venue bringing thousands of jobs to Nassau and they turned him down. If they vote no on publicly funding and arena and getting rent from him then their cutting off their nose to spite their face and they deserve to lose the team and all the jobs associated with the organization.
I suppose this doesn’t mean the end of the franchise though. There is always the Brooklyn option which has been discussed endlessly, and then theirs the Ronkonkoma option. I mean they have LIRR access, Islip Macarthur airport, and the LI/Bridgeport ferry not far at all. It’s a no brainer.

I’m still gonna be honest with you, I’m not sure which way I would vote if I had a vote for the same reasons as Alan Hahn voices above…and a belief that the Isles would not leave the Metro area – though they would leave Nassau – on a vote of No. I’d be heavily tempted to vote no to see what happens.

I don’t have a vote, and I haven’t instructed my parents either way.

Hmmmmm....

I know what you’re thinking. “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Not calling you a punk, Garik, but this is what sprung to mind when I read that. Easy for me, of course, I’m 300 miles and a national border away.

I'd miss them..

but I wouldn’t follow them if they moved out of NY. (not your parents, the Islanders)
There are better options, as I’ve said before. But those options must avail themselves. I wasn’t in favor of the LHP, and I don’t think the Islander’s CAN BE a stand alone hockey entity with this deal either. But this one works for the community, it gets a NEW BUILDING, creates jobs and will keep the Islanders where they were born.
As a voting concern even a non-hockey fan will derive more benefit from the new building than the <$20/year it will cost them.
Now that I live in VA, I really couldn’t care if they put nuclear reactors on that property… it would serve all those old bastards voting NO today a nice dish of irony. Hey, maybe their glow in the dark grandchildren will petition the local municipalities to get the Islanders back from Quebec when they fail again.
Maybe they could pipe the waste down through hempstead, North baldwin, freeport and right down guy lombardo bvd.
AND THEY’D SAVE .01 cents per Kilowatt/HR.

What happened to that rumored "Big Trade" we we all "going to love"?

I’d think if it were something major, something that might motivate people to vote YES, they’d get it done and announce it before the vote, wouldn’t they?

Or was it just a bluff, a dead end rumor or misunderstanding on the part of the reporters?

Jeff Carter to Columbus? Wait, I've seen this one before, it was called Shanahan to Hartford. Advice? Don't buy a Carter jersey.

I'll be honest

I had zero faith in those reports and zero belief that they came from anywhere near Garth Snow.

So if there’s meat on the burner as described by potential trade partners, great. But Snow seems to keep it well-sealed and acts on his own timing.

Here's hoping there a little fire behind that smoke, just the same.

I hope they fixed up some of the problems from the first season

I’m not saying it’s the one show this fall that I’m looking forward to most, but it’ll definitely be great to see again. Probably the most glorious show to watch on HD these days.

Just put in my Yes vote

and all my in-laws are doing the same. Not bad considering half of them do not follow hockey.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

Good luck today!

Sonme things Islander fans should be doing…
1. Shuttling seniors to polling places… just tell them Oprah will be there. By the time they get there they’ll forget anyway… but you might have to supply some frozen yogurt.
2. Shuttle folks from the unemployment offices to polling places. Make the case that if they vote YES they may not need a ride to the coliseum next time.
3. We should have gotten Wendy’s to give out FREE CHILI with an “I JUST VOTED” hand stamp.

Are there going to be any autograph signings conveniently scheduled at polling places?
Has there been anything written about unions pushing for this. That really needs to be the biggest presence…trade unions, building suppliers and the cabbies at the Mineola train station.

BTW: I hope that roof is retractable… so we can have our own Winter Classic every thursday night in December thru February.

Hmm.

Basically on my highly scientific gambling instincts, I put this at 55/45 with the “NO” votes taking it.

Happy to be wrong!

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
