Posting from the Coliseum

Looks to be a pretty poor turnout so far. Only about 4 thousand people.

Maybe my expectations were too high.

I was kind of hoping there’d be about 7-8 thousand. I figured it would be a higher attendance than the draft party because there’s actually players on the ice to watch, instead of a screen that projects the Versus telecast.

by nyislanders93 on Jul 17, 2011 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

7-8K? Lets be realistic lol...

…the Islanders have actual games that have attendance like that. The fact that they get the interest in something like this that they do is pretty remarkable.

Average fans want to see players they know, the only prospect they would MAYBE be interested in is the top one or two.

Case in point: When I was at the coliseum last night I was looking through the stuff on sale. A woman held up a Mottau jersey and asked, “Whos this? Is he up with the team?” as if he is a prospect. The woman who was with her shrugged. I told her he is a defenseman who would be playing all year, but he was hurt. (After I said that a guy standing next to me repeated what I said to her, only with more authority… which tickled me a bit.) A little while later, a guy was looking at an “11” jersey that had the 40th anniversary logo. He & his friend couldnt figure out what this jersey was doing here since its new. I pointed to the velcro that was there in lieu of a nameplate and said thats what they use at the draft, so that teams dont have to have name plates stitched on. He appreciated that answer and thought that was so cool that he bought it!

My point? Most people are not crazy diehards who know things like this- and thats people who WERE there last night. Imagine the people who werent, you know?

ACTUALLY...........

……it was more like 5200-5300 from what I remember…… As Garik pointed out, that is quite an impressive turn-out for a mid-summer prospects scrimmage………

Well hopefully.....

…..the Atlanta ordeal was a much-needed wake-up call for the no-shows on Long Island…. With the Isles impressive finish last season, and a very impressive crop of youngsters about to make it to The Show, maybe tonight’s rather impressive turn-out is a tell-tale sign of the fans getting their butts to more games this season, and more importantly, OUT TO VOTE YES ON AUG 1…

For someone living in Atlanta, could you guys fill me in on the vibe surrounding the pending vote? Are the local affiliates airing a lot of the spots that we saw during the scrimmage last night? Do you get the feeling that most Long Island residents will turn out to vote in favour of the arena? I sincerely hope that every last Isles fan makes it out to the polls on August first…. WE NEED YOU GUYS!

by H0PPY on Jul 17, 2011 6:00 AM EDT up reply actions

There is a whole series of fanposts on the arena issue

By “DPs hips and ankle and (lots of injuries)”, but no, as of yet there’s been limited commercial “push”. There is a lot of chatter that the heavy advertising is supposed to start this week, but as of now, mostly it has been limited to politicking through Newsday, some local papers, and through informational meetings provided throughout Nassau by the county.

The problem (to me and most here) isn’t so much the arena or the associated taxes, it’s the political partisanism an the behind the scenes business lobbying for development rights by other groups that are causing some turmoil.

The “con” side of the ledger hasn’t provided alternative numbers as much as they “doubt” the numbers of the “pro” side, “want assurances” that the arena will not be a burden to the taxpayers, and “want fair and competitive development bidding rights” so that Wang isn’t the exclusive developer.

Is that about right everyone? It’s a circus.

This team has potential, and he should have some depth to manage as well. Health will be important, but that whole first AHL line could be in the NHL for 20 games

I am more excited about Anders Lee than virtually any other prospect we have in the system….. He is the definition of “complete package”…… If we don’t get him inked up, I would go nuts…. Had scouts not feared his commitment to hockey (there was a lot of talk about him sticking with football), I think he would have been drafted MUCH higher….. We got a steal with this kid….. Gotta love that about Snowy…. He’s a gambler…. He has gambled on quite a few extremely talented kids with question marks, and so far, the only one that is not looking well is the Petrov pick…. I have a feeling that Anders Lee will be a BIG part of the Islanders future….

Multi-sport athlete, a physical, tough-as-nails football/hockey player with good leadership/character marks (heavily recruited QB) with great size, great skates and great hands… Plays the game at both ends (see his +/-), takes the body, wins faceoffs AND puts the biscuit in the basket…. What’s not to love about this kid???? He really is the entire package.

your going to

really base your entire opinion of Nino on a prospects game. The guy is a power forward and extremely physical player. That is his game, he is not going to be taking bodies out and going full throttle during a game in July.

indeed

Capuano about Nino was the most reserved – not to say negative – comment I’ve heard over the last three years from someone inside the organization about any situation of any prospect. Sounded very much like Nino will need lots of things going his way in order to make the team. And I agree, there’s massive holes in his game and it’s going to take time to fix them, though I’m unsure added pressure will help, but what can you do.

I see what you mean though

Nothing negative has been said in relationship to prospects who never looked like they had baggage. It is always praise of the standard “progressing” type of answers. Again, Kirill is a different animal and is judged on side behavior that is basically “in your face”. I’ve never heard a statement like “Yeah well, he hasn’t made the strides we’d like to see…”

This was as close as I’ve seen to that.

by TheMagus on Jul 16, 2011 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Can we?

He’d have to have an incredible camp to just get the AHL backup job… 6 goalies in front of him signed and in north america.
DP…well.. that’s probably only gonna last 20 games…
Montoya… a healthy Montoya has the NHL job to lose.
THe Knob… he might HAVE TO get an NHL TURN so they can showcase him for a trade.
Poulin.. if he isn’t healthy enough to start in the A they have…
Koskinen… who should be able to start in the A
Nilsson looks like he might have to go to the E just to get regular starts until somehting opens up.
But… DP goes down… highly likely.. the knob gets traded.. highly likely… and one or more of the other four come up lame and there’s a lot of room…. okay… maybe a good camp gets him an AHL contract with a promise to trade him if they are solid by the deadline.

Lighthouse Hockey: We have plenty of fog to guide our ships home through... we just need a HOME after 2015.

One note here guys:

Don’t be too judgmental about players, good and bad, from this game.

Prospect Exhibitions/Scrimmages are not great for scouting who will truly be good. (This is not to say you shouldn’t have enjoyed this, but I’m just saying.)

Nino

He seemed indifferent…..

by TheMagus on Jul 16, 2011 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly; I don't question his talent, but I do question his attitude a little.

He seemed to have some fun after scoring the winner, but up until that point he was just, like, going with the flow and just hanging around.

by Metzfan22 on Jul 16, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Additional Thoughts

Strome elevated the game……

Kirill was game but is still underweight……

Lee and Nelson are strong and play a full game….I would like to see them with Sunstrom. That could be a line of linebackers.

Pedan was okay….as well as CDH…Katic is a great skater….

The vet line played okay with constant pressure.

Nino is a concern…..He has got to understand he needs to work…work..work to make it work….and not coast which I felt he was doing.

by TheMagus on Jul 16, 2011 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

Nino is going to be one of those guys who you never notice during a game, until you check the box score and see that he had two goals and an assist.

Mario was a lot like that. Of course, that’s not what we’re expecting from a power forward.

Nino is a "Big Game" player

Maybe a little unmotivated to run over his own (future) teamates in July. But in the past has shown a high level of skill when “it’s on the line”. I’ll settle for the next John Tonelli.

This IS the year.

This game really shouldn't reinforce anything.

It’s fun and the Isles’ scouts do have some things they’re looking for, but they learned more about these guys in camp than at the scrimmage.

(I used to see similar scrimmages before the college bball season and you quickly learned the scrimmages were very misleading in terms of where each player stood)

Look at it this way:

this is a time for prospects to try and get invoted to the real camp. Nino is already invited to the real camp.
The last thing he would need to do is hurt himself at something like this.

I will say this: althought tonight isn't the best way to judge players, it made me think a tad more about Strome's NHL readiness.

I still think I’d send him to juniors for another year, but I’ve been assuming Nino was going to be an Islander this season and Strome looks as ready, if not more ready, than Nino does, not only on the ice but off it. Think of that laser shot on the power play with Tavares and Moulson in front with Streit on the point…man that’s nice.

by Metzfan22 on Jul 16, 2011 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

I have to say

They definitely put on, what looked like a really fun event overall, wish I was on LI for that. The last competition was really fun to watch, there were some nice looking goals in there and it kind of left you on the edge of your seat there at the end with the score being so close.

by ghalbart on Jul 16, 2011 9:43 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Just got back from the Coli

To me it was the Nelson/Lee show. Lee got the goals but the Rev was all over the place (and man is that kid big). Kabanov looked much stronger. It’s harder to judge the D because chemistry is more important for them but Donovan looked good. CDH’s goal was nice. Pedan wasn’t bad either. Mayfield made a pretty good play breaking up a potential breakaway.

Biggest surprises: McNeely has some wheels! Danny Linell looked pretty good (and he was a local invite- not even a real prospect). Sundstrom was making his presence known.

Still cannot believe the move Strome pulled. Hamonic is an awesome dude. And man, we need to have Lee & Nelson on the 3rd line next year. Oh and I think Strome won every faceoff he had (even against Nelson).

Vote Yes on August 1st.

…….twin sons of different mothers, I SWEAR! That goal was just…..OTHERWORLDLY

by ogam5 on Jul 16, 2011 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

I really wouldn't bash Nino for his play today.

He played cautiously and no way 100%. Partly could because he’s not in great physical shape right now, but a big part was him not trying to hurt himself or kill anyone with his checks. Remember, he plays a very physical in your face style, not something he should be doing in a team scrimmage. You’ll see the real nino in the preseason and camp.

I liked a lot what I saw: Nilsson, Strome, Lee, Nelson, and DeHaan stood out the most positively. DeHaan was interesting though, he battled a lot more physically then I thought he would, but seemed “weak” in close encounters getting knocked down near the boards or shoved to the ice too easily. Thank god he’s a great skater, but he definitely looks like he needs some ahl seasoning (to me at least).

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
