Gameday Bits, League Signings and More

Seriously, stretch out those hips. Do you want to end up like DP, Amac, Eaton, Mottau, etc. etc. etc?

The Islander's Blue and White scrimmage and skill competition is set for tonight at 7 pm (doors at 6).  Tickets are still available (for $12.25 including US fees???) and the game is slated to be streamed on line for free here.  If anyone is interested, maybe we will put up a game thread for people to share their opinions of how some of the up and comers look.  The camp roster was released a while ago, but if anyone has a link to the specific breakdown of the two teams, please post in comments and I will add to the body here.

In additional Islander news, three of the Isles who were extended qualifying offers have accepted them and will be in the fold for 2011-2012.  (Dylan Reese, Ty Wishart and fan favorite Micheal Haley).  [Fanshot-Fabtraption]

I’d kind of love to see Ullstrom’s line hand Strome’s line their lunch. “Welcome to the bigs!”

That would be fun

DiBo yapping, Ullstrom Fransing, Rhett picking up the scraps.

Blue has better offense, defense I’d say is tied and white has better goalies so I’d say it’s a fair matchup.

For all the UFA craziness

GMGM just did us (and anyone else still signing RFAs) a huge solid with that Alzner deal. He was certainly one of the best RFAs out there. It’s hard to imagine Bailey coming away with even a million after that deal.

by afrosupreme on Jul 16, 2011 11:41 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I don't know, Brandon Sutter's deal averages over $2 million per

I did think McPhee pulled a great one with that deal though. I just think there are other “market” measures affecting Bailey.

by Dominik on Jul 16, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, Alzner is stay at home D. He doesn’t have points to bank on and he only has one full NHL season. He had no leverage without arbitration eligibility and ended up having to take this deal, sign his QO for one year and take even less money (and be subject to a season of uncertainty about the next CBA), or not play hockey in the NHL.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Campoli
Campoli is a restricted free agent who has an arbitration hearing pending on Aug. 3, but no matter the outcome, the Hawks are moving on.
“It was apparent from the beginning their salary demands were just not in concert with where we see him fitting in our team,” Bowman said at the opening of the Blackhawks’ fan convention on Friday. “We had to make a decision (that) it wasn’t going to happen.”

I am in no way surprised, but it’s fun to read anyway.

He just needs more ice time.

Skills competition roster

POSTED ON Saturday, 07.16.2011 / 3:12 PM
By Dyan LeBourdais – / 2011 Mini-Camp
Day Five: Skills Competition Unveiled
23Share

We know you’ve all been waiting for the rundown of the skills competition. So here it goes:

Skill Blue Team White Team
The Hardest Shot: 1. Mayfield 1. Pedan
2. Theoret 2. Donovan
3. Katic 3. Trivino

Each player will have two shots. Both shots count, but only the hardest shot (miles per hour) will be recorded.

The Rapid Fire Test: 1. Persson 1. DiBenedetto
2. de Haan 2. Lee
3. Sundstrom 3. Ness
4. Cizikas 4. Nelson
Shooting on Rosen/Nilsson Shooting on Riopel/Rawlings

This competition tests the goalies. All three skaters will be armed with three pucks each and will shoot from inside the top of the faceoff circle. Each goalie will face nine shots each.

The Breakaway: 1. Niederreiter 1. Kichton
2. Strome 2. Ullstrom
3. Kabanov 3. Rakhshani
Shooting on Nilsson Shooting on Rawlings

This is the standard shootout challenge. Each skater will have one opportunity to score on the other team’s goaltender.

Team Breakaway:
Shooting on Rosen Shooting on Riopel

All the skaters from each team will participate in this challenge. All the skaters must be on their bench other than the two players trying to score. The first skater will start on the blueline as he heads for a shot on his opposing team’s goaltender. If he misses the shot, he must place the puck back on the blueline before his teammate is allowed on the ice to take the next shot. The first team to score seven goals wins.

Scoring: The winning team of each skills competition will be awarded one point, which will be added on to the final score from the scrimmage.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
