Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

The Islanders did not extend DeHart a "bona fide offer" by June 1, 2011 and, pursuant to article 8.6 of the CBA, no longer retain his rights. Toews wasn't invited because the Islanders have no intent to sign him to an NHL deal in the future.

Both could be signed to deals directly to Bridgeport, or one of the Islanders other affiliates. But this appears to be the end of the line for both players as Islanders Prospects.

It is what it is.

Neither were ever thought very highly of, and well…neither did anything to change that impression.

Good luck to them.

More surprised about Toews

Not that he earned it, but I would almost expect that he would’ve been given a bit of slack based on genetics…You know, like Brett Lindros.

hmmm usually i agree with you Keith

but on this one, i was the opposite…i know DeHart was a long shot, but i was hoping he at least would be a valuable farm hand, and i didn’t think Toews would have ever made it….

Oh, really I expected both to still be around

again, I think that speaks to the system getting much deeper…but I’m pretty sure the only reason we drafted Toews at all was on name recognition…so for that to run out now, while he’s beginning to make progress, is a little weird to me.

Such is life.

Maybe we see them on Bridgeport, but otherwise. Whatever.

Hunter said he was just finishing his check.

How close

are the Isles getting to the 50 contract limit? Wonder if that is starting to play a role.

I did the math the other day

but I’ve forgotten now. I think it was in the mid 40s

Hmmm

Guess it could be a factor then. Since apparently they are looking to add someone via trade, which may or may not involve a player of ours already under contract, plus whomever Garth once again salvages off the scrap heap, starting to near the limit.

Actually

is capgeek right on this? Looks like it might be up to date.

They would have us at 40 including the RFAs (but not JJ).

Kinda Unhappy

about DeHart — I had hopes for more. Don’t care one way or the other about Toews.

STOP effin' messin' with my FnGO!!

dehart....

they just drafted him last year. whats the point of drafting a guy if your just going to give up on him one season later? and its not like he had a horrendous year or anything. from the few reports i read about him, he was playing well. this seems odd, and there must be more to it

He was a 5th rounder.

and was not expected to be much. We have an abundance of prospects…some will get let go. Good luck to them…but you shouldn’t weep for them either. And no conspiracy theories either

i just hoped Dehart would be a solid farm hand and a useful call-up for injuries

by CanadianIsleslifer on Jul 12, 2011 10:58 PM EDT reply actions

Well, you always hope for that

But you draft 5-10 guys every singel season…and that of course doesnt include FA (like Moulson, Streit) waiver pick-ups like Grabs, etc. Since a team cannot have more than 50 contracts, teams do not keep them all. They just cant.

Let Us Go, Islanders! (Ever notice how strange that sounds without the contraction?)

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
