Nassau Coliseum: How our arena keeps us down

The past 4 seasons have seen us finish in the bottom 5 of the league. Some blame it on our rebuild, others on inept management. But there is one overwhelming reason why we suck(and will continue to suck)...Horrendous Ice.

The past 3 seasons our ice has been rated among the worst NHL arenas by the players. In addition, we have led the league in man games lost to injury which in turn is largely responsible for our permanent residence in the NHL basement. The correlation between poor ice conditions and injury is evident. Here are the numbers:

Islanders man games lost to injury

07/08 Led NHL

08/09 Led NHL

09/10 9th most

10/11 led NHL

Our ice is notoriously "soft". At the Pro level, soft ice makes it difficult to stop and pivot at the higher speeds that plays occur. This difficulty can lead to sudden loss of control, jerks and falls, which will cause increased injuries to the hips, knees and even shoulders if an awkward fall is involved.  The story will be the same this season if major flaws aren't addressed(Outdated compressors, Faulty insulation and ice resurfacing headline this list). Don't get your hopes up for the 11/12 season...unless Wang gets his $4m in renovations.
