Can't really blame him

He doesn’t have much of a chance to crack this line-up. It’ll hurt BPT but for the main club he really was just depth. I cannot remember when our top 9 were this strong. Nino will complete it this year than Strome replaces PAP the following year and we will have an elite forward core.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

Can't blame him either

I’d hoped he might stick around for a little longer (selfishly wanting him to help BPT and be insurance for NYI), but I sure don’t blame him for heading home.

Take it easy, Finn Named Jesse.

The isles are retaining his rights

So it aint over. I always thought JJ skated like crap, maybe the big ice surface helps him…but I’ll bet when he gets back, he can’t hit.

Might be good for his confidence if he can get to scoring and whatnot.

It just wasn’t happening for him here. You could tell he was frustrated.

but I’ll bet when he gets back, he can’t hit.

What stopped him before, his haircut?

wouldn’t a smaller ice surface help him more? you know, less to skate across, being slow and all…
hmm, wonder if there are any leagues in europe that play on an ice cube. THAT would help him!

I like it

to using the doughnut in batting practice, or skating with a backpack on…once you do that, then the original thing is easier. Sorry, obviously not wording myself right…I was a little hungover tired yesterday.

I’d say we miss you, but (speaking for me and probably the dozens and dozens of JJ’s fans) that would be a blatant lie.

So Nino's Job to Lose in Training Camp Yes?

I have to be believe that he is a lock now…NO? Not that Jesse was real competition but its now just one less forward.

Given that his options are here or Portland

He’ll probably have to reeaaally disappoint in camp to not be here. Or someone like Rakhshani or Ullstrom would have to be off the charts amazing.

And even if B happens

…I think Isles still keep Nino here, and bump a guy like Haley if they need to. (Or trade someone.) If there isn’t room on the top 3 lines for Nino, I think he starts out on the 4th rather than juniors. Injuries happen, right?…. If Nino has a decent camp, he’s a lock. (And motivation is there for him to be better than decent because he has a shot [longshot?] to play alongside JT to start the season.)

by North Dakota Red Eagle on Jul 1, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Nino will probably be here for the simple reason he helps the Isles make the cap floor

I liked what I saw last year from him. Heck after he left the season fell apart for the Isles and while he was with club you could see some talent.

by rickrays on Jul 1, 2011 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

More to it than that

Nino is a top nine forward in Isles system right now…I can think of 8 forwards who one could argue is NHL ready and worthy ahead of Nino now, but it ends @ 8. Nino is Isles 9th best forward…JT, MM, Pap, Franz, KO, Grabs, Comeau, Bailey…

by CanadianIsleslifer on Jul 1, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes he probably is a top 9 forward on this club

Overall health with the roster and offseason moves will determine what becomes of Nino for 2011-2012. I’d say Nino has a 70% chance of starting with the Isles after camp. The Isles would probably like the option of Nino going to Bridgeport but that isn’t a option. The WHL would be a waste of development for Nino imo.

by rickrays on Jul 1, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

kind of like these lines using this 9

Grabs – JT – Nino
Moulson – Frans – Comeau
Martin (or another 2 way FA) – JB – KO
(with PAP on the 4th line)

have Tavares & Grabner been tried together? Nino’s 2 way play could make this worth a try – and Frans might counteract Comeau’s defensive shortcomings

by Cary K on Jul 1, 2011 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

If it aint broke.......

Those are some interesting combinations, but Grabs/Frans and JT/Moulson have shown great chemistry that I really wouldn’t want to mess with… Perhaps if there is a point in the season where neither one of these lines is clicking, it might be worth a look (I would LOVE to see Grabs on the 1st line)…. I’m just really hesitant to mess with the chemistry these guys have shown…..

by H0PPY on Jul 1, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

have to play players on different lines

and build chemistry…otherwise coach’s have not done their jobs…can’t wait until an injury to play players with different lines..

by CanadianIsleslifer on Jul 1, 2011 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

We need his cap hit anyway

Unless we sign or trade for a large contract we will need his 2.8 million hit to help us reach the floor.

Vote Yes on August 1st.

by Anarcurt on Jul 1, 2011 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Said last season time was running out for Jesse with the Isles and it did

Garth needs to sign players to two way contracts not waste money with a RFA who had a occasional cup of coffee with the club. Joensuu will not be missed.

agree

Jesse is way, way to slow for the team Isles are building

I'll miss him

Not that the Isles will be hurt on the ice without him, but I liked his potential, and I hope he realizes it in the SEL.

Man... We have really stockpiled a lot of promising, young talent....

It’s amazing what a difference a competent GM makes…. Our farm is so stocked these days, we are going to wind up having to actually part with some very talented kids over the next few years…. Granted, not EVERY one of these kids is going to live up to his potential, but you gotta love to see all this talent primed to make it to The Show in the next 2-3 years…. Nonetheless, I would move “Rak” up to the #4 (perhaps even #3) at this point… He was a consistent scoring threat in college (First Team All Star in 2009-10) and the leading scorer (24-38-62 in 66 games) at the Bridge last season…. Looks like a slightly lesser Ryan Strome…. Small, but fast…. Strong skater, right-hand shot with great vision and great hands…. Good scoring touch but more adept at dishing out the puck… A lot of similarities between the two…..

I’d actually like to see Strome as our #2 center and I’d LOVE to see what JT could do with Rak feeding him the point from the right wing…

Either way they sort em out, it looks like it is going to take miraculous levels of misfortune to prevent us from being one of the most dangerous young teams in the NHL over the next 2-3 years….. Even if only HALF of these guys live up to their expectations, we are gonna be STACKED!

Im hoping that Bailey can have a break out season and claim the #2 center position...

Nielson is a perfect #3…I know Bails hasnt been that guy yet but hes shown glimpses of brilliance…I hope he can put it all together because he has the skill

Adios Cotton Candy Hands!

Not a big deal. Would hav eliked to see him help Bridgeport get over teh hump… but maybe the new coach just classified him as, “Hump1.0”. Done.

I think when Gordon asked for "size"...

…after 2009-10 he was trying to increase testicle size. The ratio of body mass to testicles is way off with JJ. Give me Haley, and even Rakhshani…. and definitley Nino! It’s just the way they play. see Matt Martin. He had his opportunities, and even admitted that he didn’t do enough with them.
Give ’em hell in the SEL!

OT: What would help Bridgeport get over the hump is 45 plus games from Poulin in goal in 2011-2012

Have my doubts that will happen due to Kevin’s health. If Poulin somehow stays healthy and is doing great he’ll probable get called up to the Isles once DP gets a concussion combing his hair or when Montoya struggles.

The Bridge to get over...

…consists of 40 shots per night, playmaking centers, and a defense that doesn’t spend too much time in the NHL prematurely.
Hopefully all of those bases are covered by having a healthy 8 QUALITY NHL defenseman make it though the NHL season.

Another in an endless series ...

of guys with big-time size and strength who wouldn’t use it or didn’t know how to. Frustrating to watch. Dalgarno, Isbister, Kvasha and now Joensuu (and whoever else I’m forgetting). Not to mention Yashin, who would have been a 50-60 goal scorer instead of 40 goal scorer had he maximized his assets.

by dose on Jul 1, 2011 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

Dalgarno!!

The vision of Brad hurt on the ice late in the 3rd period at Montreal during game two of the 1993 Conference Finals was his defining moment as a Islander. Habs tied the game while Brad was hurt and won in OT.

Isles Reading

Islanders Schedule

1979-80

May 24, 1980: Tonelli to Nystrom. At long last, the steady build of the New York Islanders from expansion doormat to surprise semifinalist to annual contender reaches the promised land: Buoyed by a late season trade for Butch Goring that gave the team the depth up the middle GM Bill Torrey had been seeking, the Islanders knock off the Philadelphia Flyers in six games.

The victory justified the faith in coach Al Arbour who guided them from their second season to their first Stanley Cup seven seasons later. The Islanders would not be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, but they would be the only one capable of a dynasty.

1980-81

May 21, 1981: This time it was much easier. After falling to "only" 91 points in the 1979-80 season, the Islanders returned to their division title tradition, piling up 110 points -- a whole 13 points over second-place Philadelphia.

Between the quarterfinals (where they beat the upstart Oilers in six games) and the finals, the Islanders reeled off eight consecutive wins -- with a four-game sweep of archrival Rangers in between. As they defeated the Minnesota North Stars in five games for their second Cup, their goal difference in the final was a combined +10.

1981-82

May 16, 1982: Another year, another landslide title. The Islanders won the Patrick Division by a whopping 26 points over the second-place Rangers, and were seven points clear of their nearest competition for the President's Trophy, the still-not-quite-ripe Edmonton Oilers.

A first-round scare against the Pittsburgh Penguins turned in the Isles' favor thanks to John Tonelli's heroics, and a true dynasty was on its way: Past the Rangers in six games, then an eight-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques and Vancouver Canucks to run away with the Stanley Cup.

1982-83

May 17, 1983: Not so fast, whipper-snappers. The Edmonton Oilers' steadily rising challenge for league supremacy took them all the way to the finals for the first time, where the New York Islanders summarily dispatched them in a four-game sweep. For the Islanders, the Dynasty was secured. For the Oilers, it was a powerful lesson in where talent ends and the demands of playoff hockey begin.

Four years, four Cups, 16 consecutive playoff series wins (a record that would grow to 19 until the rematch with the Oilers the following year). Mike Bossy scored 60 goals yet again, and Wayne Gretzky became acquainted with Billy Smith's crease.
