GM 101: Reaching the Salary Cap's Floor *POLL INSIDE*

By utilizing capgeek.com, I relatively "correct" website when it comes to having the most up to date rosters and contracts, we can take note that the Islanders are $11 million under the floor.  Essentially, this means we have to spend $11 million on players for next year.

First and foremost - the following players are UFAs/RFAs and will most likely/are being resigned - Bailey, Comeau, Gillies, and Haley.

(I included Gillies because his recent signing of a $500,000 contract hasn't been updated on capgeek.com).

It can be safe to assume that Bailey and Comeau will have a cap hit somewhere around $2 million to $2.5 million - so lets say $4.75 million for the two of them next year.  Gillies is $500,000 putting us at $5.25 million.  Haley will most likely be resigned for an amount between $750,000 to $1 million - lets say $1 million to be safe.  This means that we will be spending roughly $6.25 million to $6.5 million on those 4 players next year.

We still have $4.5 million left to spend to reach the floor - so who could we obtain that will be a presence on the ice as well as help us hit the floor.

To go on a tangent - I think most of us believe the lines for this upcoming season will be

MOULSON - TAVARES - PARENTEAU

GRABNER - NIELSEN - OKPOSO

COMEAU - BAILEY - NIEDERREITER

HALEY - CIZIKAS - HUNTER

With this said - we must add Cizikas to the spending - his contract is $800,000.  This puts out $4.5 million to spend down to $3.7 million.

The Islanders need to acquire a semi-overpaid defenseman through trade or UFA.  I believe trading will be the way to go.

IDEA 1 - trade for Jay Bouwmeester's $6.7 million contract.  This would give us a great defenseman for the next 3 years at $6.7 million a year.  In 3 years the cap will increase higher, and we will be resigning a lot of our top end RFA's at the time so Bouwmeester could be gone by then, or we could try to sign him to a cheaper contract.

IDEA 2 - attempt to sign Bieska or Ernhoff from Vancouver.  Bieska was signed at $3.75 million and Ernhoff was at $3.1 million before becoming UFAs.  If we overpay either one of these players by paying them $4.5 million we are getting a good player for a little bit of overpayment.  $4.5 million won't do too much damage to our cap needs in the future as it isn't a ridiculous amount of money to signed a top 4 defenseman to.

IDEA 3 - trade for Coburn ($3.2 million), Carle ($3.5 million), or Meszaros ($4 million) from the Flyers.  I would prefer Meszaros or Coburn personally.  All 3 of them do not have no trade clauses so they would be easily attainable.  Also, the Flyers only have $8 million in cap space to resigned Voracek, Simmonds, Powe, Nodl, Carcillo and Leino.  Voracek, Simmonds, and Leino will get more then $8 million combined.  Most of us know that the Flyers depth pool is thin and they need to begin building a better selection of prospects.  I think if we trade the 2012 2nd round pick and the 2013 3rd round pick we could get any one of those 3 players who would help us on the blueline.
