2011-12 NHL Schedule: Islanders open with 4-game homestand
The NHL released its schedule today, and your Islanders home opener is Saturday, Oct. 8, against Florida. That's part of a season-opening four-game homestand that also includes Minnesota, Tampa Bay and the Rangers. Typically I'd see the Panthers and Wild as wholly uninspiring opponents, but that early in the season people are just eager and excited for hockey, period.
- A home-and-home with the suddenly reviled Penguins is Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 25 and 27.
- The Islanders visit Madison Square Garden the day after Christmas -- three days after playing at the Garden on Dec. 22 -- but otherwise face the Rangers about once a month.
- The first-ever meeting with the Manitoba Manifest Destinies (nee Thrashers, currently "Winnipeg NHL") is Thursday, Nov. 3.
- The annual spring Florida trip is in late March, for you golf-and-spring-jaunt fans.
The full schedule as listed by the NHL is posted below. See any highlights or disappointments?

It’s a matinee. That means they can hit up Hooters afterwards.

There was a time...
…when Islanders fans could safely ignore games against the Kings (and vice versa, probably).
Now, I’ve heard about them so many times, I feel like Jon Quick is my brother-in-law, too.

Which game will we see DiPietro's first injury?
or do that not announce that with the schedule?
"It's a good thing the Islanders spent the offseason compiling organizational depth on the blueline. Because, yes, they're losing defensemen almost as rapidly as they're losing games."
Or better still
Does DP start the home opener if healthy? You have a real good chance there to get off at 3-1-0 at least.

another Columbus Day matinee… Kids Days?
no rangers, no wiz, no gesturing.
game rated G against The Wild?
1st Rangers game: 10/15.
Expect A LOT of Ranger fans. They open abroad and MSG wont re-open from renovations til 10/27. This is a pit-stop on their way to the West Coast so expecting plenty of Rangers at this one. Plus, NYR raised their ticket prices so this should sell out. With a 7pm start, should provide better beer sales than the Columbus Day matinee last year.
When will the Nordiques invade this year?
will they show up for Thrashers-turned-Winnipegers on 11/3 or season closer on 4/5?
Isles will only play Coyotes in PHX on 1/7.
NHL scheduling missed an opportunity for 3,000 Nordiques to hit the Coli for a Coyote game.
Atlantic Division:
last divisional team to play first-game against will be the NJD on 11/25 (a home and home series 11/26)
Isles will already have played:
Philly once 11/23
Rangers twice (10/15 and 11/15)
Pitt 3x (10/25, 10/27 and 11/21)
Finally gonna' see the Coli this year after 30 years of being a fan

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, BobbyNy
But I think the 11/13 games is actually in Vancouver… that said, that would mean that your first game at the NVMC will be an Islander-Ranger game, which is going to be absolutely awesome and worth your trip up from FLA!

My bad..
yes, was supposed to copy that game first. i still get three games in 5 days, that’s what i was hoping for.
I think i will get my plane tickets soon. Is it possible to buy tickets for 3 games straght and save a little money? Do they have packages for that?

No back breaking road trips this year either.

Why does opening day have to be on Yom Kippur? Even though 8PM is after sunset, I don’t think I’ll be able to make this. First game and I’m already planning on giving my tickets to a friend.

I can't believe they won't just swap the Preds/Winnpeg
so that the teams’ travel arrangements can all make a bit more sense. Is there really that much red tape?

I think part of the concern
is the possibility that the Coyotes move after this season (possibly to somewhere in the East) and they don’t want to deal with going through realignment for Winnipeg this year, only to have to rework everything again next off season.
- where else could they move BUT Quebec City? Hartford isn't in serious play,
much to the chagrin of Whalers diehards and despite Baldwin’s best efforts:(
I suppose there's always
Kansas City. And, if the rumor that Bettman was willing to give Balsillie a team if he continued to play nice could arguably put Hamilton back in the picture

Landeskog picked the poem
Not sure thats the answer the Isles are looking for, if you want a player who is going to impose their will others. Give me that puck, our I’ll whisper a rhyme in your ear.
This IS the year.
Landeskog or Hamilton...I saw Hamilton
It’s probably not the answer they’re looking at, it’s the reaction, the confidence and the snap decision making when thrown a curve. Because really, all that answer would tell me is that Landeskog and Hamilton are full of shit and should go play for the Canucks.
Sorry Semi!

Ummmm - NO, guys; people who appreciate poetry.....
…..are quite often VERY self-motivated, find much meaning in life – a 17-year-old who demonstrates that level of feeling usually is QUITE mature for their age – so a poem may actually be the PREFERRED answer…..
Sorry to be a bit overbearing - I wrote lyrics and poetry for over 2 decades.....
…..so these comments hit a nerve, admittedly…..
any recommendations for a fan of Poe, Dickinson, Frost (for prose I like Hemingway and Crane)

I actually voted for this in the LHH poll a few days ago.
I voted that Garth would make a deal for a proven player with the 5th pick. We get the player plus another lesser pick in this year’s draft or next year.

The Western teams they play twice are Chicago, Dallas and Minnesota – that’s pretty fair. I too like how the Winnipeg situation has been handled for the Isles with a game in Minnesota just prior to the first trip to Winnipeg and then a game in St Louis just after the 2nd one.
I hate how their schedule looks down the stretch, though – extremely busy and rather road-heavy. In March and in April combined they’ll play 19 games in 38 days (4 times back-to-back nights, 4 times 3 games in 4 nights). 11 of the final 19 games are away (13 of the final 21, 16 of the final 25). There’s not a huge amount of travel involved there with lots of games, but still, a home stand or just a more quiet week could do some good down the stretch for sure.
Of course, the home-heavy (13 of the first 20 are at home) and not very busy (first back-to-back is in late November) start is kind of cool, but I’d honestly prefer it the other way around or a least a little more balanced.
well knowing our starts
I would rather inflate our numbers and our egos first before we come crashing down in the end. At least we can say it was the schedules fault at that point and not the 19 of 21 we lost on mostly the road in November.
Ottawa in February!
2 games in 1 month! I hope to see at least one of them but if all works out both would be spectacular!
The New York Islanders....they make opposing goalies look gooooood.
He said “the 100 people arrested for the Vancouver riots should be forced to attend a Islander home game, at least it would double the attendance”
To be fair, he busted on lots of teams.
Its just that the Isles were the first team to get a real scathing joke.

Looking forward to next season
Just now looking over which games I may be angling to see next season, both at the Nassau Coliseum and on the road.
As for Winnipeg, the NHL has tried to make travel as easy as possible for the teams that have to go to Winnipeg a few times during the season. I can certainly live with the Isles going to Minnesota and St. Louis during their road trips that take them to Manitoba. I’ve noticed that other teams get to go to Toronto, then Winnipeg, then back to wherever. I was fearing that teams may have be on a roadtrip to Southeast Division teams, fly to Florida, then to Winnipeg, then to Carolina, then back home.
Western "rivals"
For those playing at home, the Isles will play Minnesota, Dallas and Chicago twice.
Also, having the last game of the season at Columbus may rise some eyebrows. I remember there was a small stink raised about Buffalo playing Columbus the last day of last season, but if an Eastern Conference team is playing a Western Conference team then, Columbus is closer than the Florida teams or Winnipeg.
