How fun will it be to root for a non-laughingstock? [Also, READER POLL]

Stay connected for news and updates

There is and has been a vast chasm between how Islander Country views its team and how the mainstream media views them.  We see this year after year in season previews, week to week in the "power rankings" and most recently in Botta's interview with Gord Miller, who laughingly dismissed the work the team did this year as meaningless and seemed to relate the team as one would to an embarrassing stepchild.  For better or worse, the almost Palin-esque sense of bitterness and indignation generated by the media's dismissive attitude towards our Islanders to a large extent defines what it means to be a fan these days.

However, there have been recent rumblings suggesting that this may be about to change.  Scott Cullen had a downright glowing yet reasoned take on the Islanders at TSN, Pierre Maguire had very positive things to say about the team's on Botta's site, and yesterday the talented yet enigmatic site, Hockey's Future, rated the Isles' prospects number 6 in the league

The key question is: how fun will it be to root for a team that actually gets respect from other teams and the media?

And now, a reader poll -- predict the media predictions!  Next we will predict how fans will predict the predictions.
